April 22, 20214 yr Terrible stuff that's happening in India, I don't know enough about Modi's response to fully critique it but it's always been a prime candidate for a quickly spreading virus, insane levels of poverty there, people crowded up against each other everywhere you look - though Modi's extreme Hindu nationalism isn't going to do much to help, especially as part of this recent spread is attributed to a Hindu holy gathering at the Ganges.

I have been to India but I cannot claim to know all about the culture and set-up, but it really does seem as if Modi's party have seen an opportunity to try and push through elections to win States they did not control and of course the mass religious gatherings. Really worrying stuff as like you say, somewhere like India is prime for a huge spread of the virus. I'd really like to see some international support to at least help with hospitals etc. and resources as this is going to be a huge problem for the World and especially Asia.
April 22, 20214 yr 2 patients in hospital in NI with Covid one has the first dose and the other with both vaccine doses - worrying.
April 22, 20214 yr 2 patients in hospital in NI with Covid one has the first dose and the other with both vaccine doses - worrying. Not particularly? You expect some cases - the vaccines aren't 100% effective even with two doses.
April 22, 20214 yr 2 patients in hospital in NI with Covid one has the first dose and the other with both vaccine doses - worrying. Did they have underlying health conditions?
April 22, 20214 yr 2 patients in hospital in NI with Covid one has the first dose and the other with both vaccine doses - worrying. Seems likely it will be one of the Covid variants involved then. The relevant authorities should certainly test these two patients as to what Covid variant they have. Edited April 22, 20214 yr by TheSnake
April 22, 20214 yr Author Ah but how recently had they had their injections because it takes approx. 3 weeks for immunity to develop? Though with the full two you'd assume some (70% ) of effective immunity already in play the day after from the first one.. but very isolated cases with nothing out of Israel in the data showing anything other than positive news so far (where the vaccine rollout has been fastest), I wouldn't let 2 cases concern you tbh, especially when you think of how many millions of people have now had the vaccine.
April 22, 20214 yr 2 patients in hospital in NI with Covid one has the first dose and the other with both vaccine doses - worrying. In a rational world, that would serve as a reminder that the vaccination does not provide 100% protection and that we still need to be careful. Unfortunately, I can see some people using it as a reason not to have the vaccine "because it's useless".
April 22, 20214 yr Are we still in the middle of a pandemic or are we now at the end stage? Well I think there will be another wave of Covid and lockdown in the autumn caused by import via overeasing of summer travel restrictions by the UK government of a largely vaccine resistant Covid variant that will probably emerge by then so I think we are nowhere near the end of the pandemic. But most of Buzzjack are more optimistic than me.... Edited April 22, 20214 yr by TheSnake
April 22, 20214 yr End stage for me. Nobody in London was taking it seriously any more. :(  I am certainly dreading the possibility of mask rules and distancing in shops and supermarkets being eased this summer, everything else like pubs people can take their own risks but the thing is nearly everyone has to go to the supermarket. Even if the vulnerable were to still wear masks we don't know whether than would be enough if we went back to pre pandemic style busy shops with no mask rules.
April 22, 20214 yr Are we still in the middle of a pandemic or are we now at the end stage? Well it’s different compared to different countries. Cases are as high as they have ever been so I’d still say it’s a global pandemic and we’re not over the worst of it by far. I suspect it will last well in to 2022. However from the U.K. perspective we should know more in the next few weeks when the data comes through. I suspect a third wave is inevitable but I don’t quite buy in to the doom and gloom scenario. We’re still going to have reasonable cases but the vaccines really do look like they have an effect on hospitalisations, which is huge. So I’d say it’s all a bit unknown really and could end up going either way. General attitudes have definitely laxed but outside at least the risk is fairly minimal. Â

Aren't like 90% of that group already vaccinated?
April 23, 20214 yr We would be popping Covid pills as many as we like by then Edited April 23, 20214 yr by SimpsonFan
April 23, 20214 yr From a global standpoint we're not even at the middle yet given cases & deaths reached new highs this week which is the depressing part. But UK-wise I am cautiously optimistic we *are* over the hill. Even if there is a third wave I cannot see how on earth the NHS would be *as* overwhelmed as during previous spikes with so many people possessing higher immunity levels. The only pitfall now would be a completely vaccine-resistant variant but with the much better border control now it'd have to be both a colossal administrative f*** up AND a seriously bad variant to go back to the dark days.

But we can't say for any certainty with that yet as we don't know. The hokey cokey with international travel too could be a problem. Did we end up finding out why Chile had quite high levels of infections but also a high vaccination rate? That kind of went under the radar and I haven't heard anything about it since really.
