June 14, 20214 yr So absolute bedlam today at school. Due to positive LFT results we were down two teachers, a trainee teacher, the science technician and the whole of Year 8. Throughout the day several members of staff were contacted by Test and Trace and had to go home meaning we’re also closed to Year 10 tomorrow as we just don’t have the staff to cover the teaching. Luckily my LFT just came back negative again. I’ve also received a text from the NHS offering the chance to bring my second dose forward due to a rise in infections in my area so I’m now having it after school on Wednesday, 11 days earlier than planned. That’s if I don’t test positive before that. I honestly don’t care about anyone defending government decisions (any UK government) right now because this is ripping through schools. School staff should have had priority for the vaccine.
June 14, 20214 yr 4 week delay confirmed. Johnson says he is confident of lifting them in 4 weeks time. FFS can he stop over promising stuff! :manson:
June 14, 20214 yr 4 week delay confirmed. Johnson says he is confident of lifting them in 4 weeks time. FFS can he stop over promising stuff! :manson: The growth trend seems to be slowing down slightly, although probably clear we're going to be peaking at about 15-20k cases per day, maybe more. I guess with not opening any restrictions it doesn't get much higher and hopefully there are some more jabs to go around.
June 14, 20214 yr 4 weeks to flatten the curve. Now where have I heard that before. But this time you’re no actually doing anything to flatten it. This was inevitable really and they’ve thrown it away by allowing the delta variant to get hold.
June 14, 20214 yr But this time you’re no actually doing anything to flatten it. This was inevitable really and they’ve thrown it away by allowing the delta variant to get hold. We don't need to flatten it though, it will flatten itself out in a few months with the vaccines. Suspect unless we're running at 30-40k cases per day in a few weeks we will open up fully.
June 14, 20214 yr Of course you do!!! If you allow a Virus That mutates heavily to run rampant through a highly partially-vaccinated population that is fertile breeding grounds for a variant that breaks through immunity. And then you’re gonna lose not only the UKs progress but endanger *everyones* progress against this thing.
June 14, 20214 yr I do feel sorry for a lot of businesses who had spent large amounts of money preparing for June 21st. The delay could sadly lead to a lot of them going bust. I hope the government announce more support for them at the very least. Hopefully the 4 week delay will be enough to get large enough numbers vaccinated that we start seeing cases falling off again. Schools will be shut for summer holidays on the Friday that week too. Hopefully schools being off for holidays will also help dent the numbers.

We're running at the same case numbers for most of Europe, while I still expect cases numbers to go up, we're in the exit wave now. There's only so far the virus can mutate and suspect now with the 4 week delay we will be ok. The growth has slowed down slightly. Agree that at some point we're just going to have to live with it, closing pubs and resturaunts right now would be counter intuitive.
June 14, 20214 yr The easing of the final restrictions being delayed mostly doesn't make much difference really I don't think, as young people with 1 jab or none yet are meeting up more anyway, having house parties more probably and the Delta variant is spreading more anyway. The one thing that does make a difference is masks and social distancing in shops as the vulnerable and those with health conditions who have to visit essential services will be potentially put at higher risk when that is eased.

If schools being shut will dent the numbers, why not switch to remote learning right now? We’re five weeks from the end of the school year, Years 11 and 13 are done and the students don’t even get to do anything fun this year like trips, sports days or an end of year concert. It seems madness to hope the Summer holidays will fix things whilst letting the virus run rampant over the next month. Some schools are now on their knees because of this variant.
June 14, 20214 yr And of course Johnson shows his usual arrogance by completely bypassing Parliamentary standards by doing a Press conference rather than in front of MPs. The Speaker has rebuked him but of course rules don't apply for our immoral charlatan in charge.

Perhaps he wanted to avoid the Tories looking even more divided.
June 14, 20214 yr Oh I'm sure he had his reasons but it's against the rules. Normally people in politics should abide with the rules which they expect the rest of the country to abide with. Brexit was allegedly about sovereignty but if he is too worried about facing his own MPs (with an 80 seat majority no less) then it's more about dictatorship. Depressing.
June 14, 20214 yr Did anyone watch the press conference? Judging by comments on Twitter, he was babbling even more incoherently than ever.

Spain is the only European country running a higher number than you (fractionally) and Spain’s numbers are flat vs your exponential, near vertical, rise. In the past month you have overtaken literally everyone apart from Spain who’s progress was halted at the same time they let Brits freely enter Spain. Theres been no similar upswing in cases anywhere in Europe outside of the UK. You have a nasty variant running rampant. I dunno if it’s ignorance or arrogance at the wheel back home but whatever it is it’s foolish to think that a virus that has already proven to mutate to make itself more spreadable and already has limited vaccine escape wouldn’t continue to do that if allowed to run rampant
June 14, 20214 yr Wasn’t worth watching, this was literally reported this morning and I feel like most have known for about a week
June 14, 20214 yr Author For those concerned that it will be extended again - very, very unlikely. A new wave is now inevitable, experts I've read seem to think that delaying the full reopening any further risks pushing the peak into the awkward autumn season. The priority in this 4 week period is instead to vaccinate as many people as possible (2 doses for everyone >50 and 1 dose for everyone >18) because 2 doses is 95% effective at preventing hospitalisation, and with schools closing soon after 19 July that will likely to help slow transmission too. We must remember though that the delay is a huge blow for the music/entertainment industry and the government must step in to provide much needed support- after all it is entirely their fault that the new more transmissible variant was allowed to take hold.

The UK is also aheasd of the rest of Europe in terms of opening up as far as I am aware? The good news is the data from PHE is good for AZ and Pfizer against hospitalisations so that's something positive. There is definitely a lot of complacency in the UK, but I feel this is a human behaviour, rather than limited to people in the UK.
June 14, 20214 yr But is there as many cases in other countries - do we have any data on this to confirm?
