I know that travelling in a pandemic is stupid and risky and selfish (but i wasn’t spending Christmas alone in Berlin) but I just wish BA would make a schedule and f***ing stick with it. I’ve actually lost track of the number of times they’ve cancelled one or more of the flights in my trip.

EasyJet cancelled first and so I rebooked with BA because EasyJet had a super slimline schedule and with the new variant now only have two flights between today and mid feb so looking like a smart choice to swap to BA. However. One round of cancellations (two flights) before I left the country. They cancelled the rebooked one. And then again. And then again.

One of the cancellations was because the German government shut the border for travellers from the UK. That I can forgive. The rest are scheduling decisions they’re making voluntarily at short notice leaving me wholly uncertain about when or if I will get home. I am so done with BA. Next Christmas I am flying KLM

New tiers to be announced later today by Matt Hancock. All areas in T4 expected to stain it for now. Burnley, Lancs likely to move in to T4.

New Oxford vaccine to start being given on 4th so Monday. Isn't it only 70% effective though?

That's actually still quite high. A lot of vaccines are around that number. Like the flu jab for example.

No. Two full doses is 62% effective or, by accident, it was shown one half dose followed by a full dose is 90% effective.

You're not the only one complaining about this. Yes it's very inconvenient but is only to be expected in the current climate. Their planes, their choice whether to fly or not. They won't fly almost empty planes. No point, cost them more in fuel.

I wonder if you can choose which you have. Say when they ring as and if it's the Oxford one say you'll wait for the other or would you lose your turn? I'm due mid-March with being over 60, diabetic and overweight.

Most people will have the Oxford one, I suspect the Pfizer one will be purely for healthcare staff now due to the logistics of it all.

The problem we are in now is we're in no mans land with the vaccine and the Government refuses to say when restrictions will end.

Education Sec. Gavin Williamson is about to make a statement to MP's about plans for schools. Around 4pm after Hancock's spoken.

Finally they aren't giving us false hope.

500K doses ready for next week. Assuming capacity will be ramped up heavily afterwards. I expect they'd only dare to ease restrictions when 70% of the population has been vaccinated (which is around the herd immunity figure I think?). One hell of a challenge though, not just logistically but to convince enough people to take the vaccine at all.

Worrying thing about the older population is they reckon it only gives 3 months guaranteed immunity.

The decisions as to tiers are ridiculous when you compare numbers. It just seems they wanted to avoid the label of national lockdown so gave a few areas Tier 3. With so many areas on the same level as Tier 3 but have been put in Tier 4, it makes no sense as to why the whole of England isn’t in Tier 4.

I think it makes sense, Yorkshire for example's covid rate is about 200 per 100k, whereas in other places it is 2-3 times that amount. The national lockdown was meant to save the South and London before, but it had absolutely no impact.

So most primary schools back next Monday but in some high risk areas return to be delayed. Details of those to follow he said. Only secondary school vulnerable kids and kids of key workers back next week. Others wait until after mass testing programme and then may be GCSE and A level classes back first.

Many places around Yorkshire are lower or at the same level yet have been placed in Tier 4. This graph shows there’s very very few Tier 3 areas lower than some in Tier 4, with the majority on par with those I’m presuming have just been placed in Tier 4:

Agree with this, they know they need another lockdown, but if they use the phrase "National Lockdown" it'll spark outrage, so they're tiptoeing around it by putting most places in Tier 4. North East did not need to be in Tier 4, it wasn't that bad up here, it was decently contained, for tier 3 anyway.

None of this is worth anything if they don't close the school's. It's just going to restart next week, even with staggered start dates.

Hospital capacity and demographics catching it etc. etc. I guess - easier for us to manage in the short term, although at some point we will end in Tier 4 for sure.

Schools are open. Might as well just kiss goodbye to the first few months of next year.

I’m quite glad to be in Wales because all of that school reopening stuff for England looks very inconsistent and complicated. I do feel for the Primary School staff. Many will have not seen any family over the holiday but get to mix with tens of households from Monday.
Highest number of cases in Northern Ireland today as well. The vaccine can't come soon enough.

And 50,023 in the whole UK. I just wonder sometimes how all these people are getting the virus, they can't all be breaking coronavirus rules? Maybe just through Christmas shopping or their children catching it from school?

I have no idea what's going on- going back on the 11th but not? Only year 11 and 13 for that week but still a week late...? Then all back on 18th?... So what's happening week of the 4th, online learning?

Going to have to wait for a work email to see how I'm affected it seems.
