March 12, 20214 yr sure the Brits will have Best chromosome XY and Best chromosome XX category :D lol That's what we've been doing the whole time. That's what male and female MEAN! They refer to sex, not gender. The categories aren't best man and best woman, they're best male and best female. When we talk about dogs being male and female, we're not talking about what gender they identify as, because we have no way of knowing that, we're talking about their sex. Same with historical figures, we can never know what gender they identified as because they had to keep that secret back then. I think it's the most inclusive way to do it actually, because it means all people can be included in just 2 categories, and it helps people of the female sex get recognised in a male dominated music industry. And it's also inclusive of people who wish to keep their gender identity secret or just as a personal thing. It's also far more inclusive on a global scale because most other cultures in the world don't have the concept of non-binary, or certainly have different concepts of gender to what we do in Western Europe and the US. I know it's the BRIT awards, so maybe this last point shouldn't be considered if we want to be nationalistic about our award ceremonies, but the fact of the matter is we do live in a global world now, so it's another thing we might have to consider. I don't know, but I think it's the best solution. Either this or just do away with awards divided by sex all together, but that might result in people of the female sex struggling to get awards, I think that's probably why they did this in the first place.
March 13, 20214 yr The Brits ceased to be relevant about 15 years ago, but I don't think it's so difficult to move it along in the gender sense: Best album by a UK artist Best single by a UK artist Best album by a non-UK artists Best Single by a UK artist Creative award for a UK artist album campaign (doesn't have a to a be video) Creative award for a non-UK artist album campaign Best tour by a UK act Best tour by a non-UK act Best UK debut album Best non-uk debut album Best UK song in a movie Best UK newcomer Best UK revival Etc...

Yes, it's an easy solution. Either that or awards by sex like we did before. It has to be one of those two options. Doing awards by gender, properly, would be an absolute logistical nightmare. If we do only the two most common genders, it leads to people like Sam Smith being ineligible. Gender HAS to be kept out of award shows completely from now on I think. We have to divide by sex, or not at all. There's also the fact that people can be genderfluid. They can be a man for a few years, then a woman for a few years, and then back to a man for a few years. There have even been reports of some genderfluid people saying that their gender can change multiple times in the space of a single day, and between non-binary genders. So theoretically, how would we ever incorporate this into award shows? In this time of discovery many people are going through with their genders, it's possible that in 10, 20 years we might one day have a situation where a music artist changes gender DURING an award show and becomes ineligible for their award, or have to be moved categories during live TV. It sounds weird, but given the new things we're discovering about gender now, it really is possible something like that could happen one day. So it has to be by sex, or none at all. Having categories by gender is too complicated.
March 14, 20214 yr Does anyone know if Harry is eligible for British Male? I saw fans are excited because the eligibility window is 13th December 2019 - 11th March 2021 and Fine Line came out on 13th December. Obviously they can't nominate the album again, but can he get another British Male nomination?
March 14, 20214 yr If they got rid of the gender-based award (which they SHOULD), there would still be at least: Best British album Best British single Best British solo artist Best International solo artist Best British Group Best International Group Best Music Video British Breakthrough Artist of the Year Whatever that critic's choice is called these days They COULD do more niche categories such as: Best Soundtrack for a Movie Best Rock/Pop/Dance/R&B/Rap album and of course the Outstanding contribution to music Award That's like 16 categories without mentioning the gender
March 14, 20214 yr But if you just have best solo artist you're cutting down from 2 to 1 award and there will be the complaints when one gender gets more nominations than the other, especially if it's male-dominated.
March 14, 20214 yr The Grammys (as much as we hate them #scammys) have the right idea by just not having a 'best artist' award at all, it's all about the individual songs and albums (apart from Best New Artist).
March 14, 20214 yr what a stupid rule. Harry Styles deserves to be nominated for best male this year (and deserves to win), he literally released hit after hit, not to mention he has the 2nd best-selling album of the year after Capaldi. Really sad if it is connected to album release. Not fair. I agree it's a stupid rule. Same with Melanie C she was nominated in 2000 for Best Female when her album hadn't really taken off properly then she has two huge #1's and the album sells bucket loads being one of the most successful female artist albums of the year but she qualify for a nomination because she already had it. Had she missed out on a nomination in 2000 she would likely have won in 2001 like Harry would likely have won it this year. :arrr:
March 14, 20214 yr It’s always happened. Amy Winehouse was much bigger throughout 2007 and yet her win that year meant she didn’t get any nominations in 2008 (except best single with Mark Ronson.)
March 14, 20214 yr It’s always happened. Amy Winehouse was much bigger throughout 2007 and yet her win that year meant she didn’t get any nominations in 2008 (except best single with Mark Ronson.) Well I get you can't win twice but if you didn't win but then go on to have more success no reason why you can't be nominated again.

March 15, 20214 yr The Grammys (as much as we hate them #scammys) have the right idea by just not having a 'best artist' award at all, it's all about the individual songs and albums (apart from Best New Artist). I would go with this too, and perhaps something similar to some other awards where the nomination limit is increased but only for artists that reach a certain nomination threshold. March 18, 20214 yr Voting for this was on Friday - apparently Jarvis Cocker's JARV IS was down for Breakthrough, but has now been removed as they didn't realise it was from an already established musician

March 18, 20214 yr Would Celeste’s album be eligible? I know that Don’t Start Now isn’t eligible- I remember reading something about that! 11th March was the cut off apparently because of them delaying BRITS until May!
