1. HUMAN- The Killers (56,280) #3

nmf8mbk.jpg

No 1 in 41 weeks in 2008

Described by Flowers as “Johnny Cash meets Pet Shop Boys” The Killers third album was primed and ready when this single was released and shot to No 3 but look at those 41 weeks of the year when it would have been a No 1 track. It actually entered at No 4 in the week that it sold 56k behind Beyonce, T.I & Rihanna, and X Factor Finalists but in any week between April and October it would easily have swanned straight to the top and could therefore be, arguably, one of the unluckiest records of the last 35 years...!

The 11 weeks of the year that it wouldn’t have hit the top? 8/3, 5/4, 1/11, 8/11, 15/11, 22/11, 6/12, 13/12, 20/12, 27/12, 3/01

Fitting that the #1 here ends up being an act who never had a #1 single - and a great song as well.

I didn't have a clue who would be top 2 and so it is a complete surprise to see them both here.

'We All Stand Together' is dreadful but there's no denying that it was massive during Christmas 1984. If we count this as a solo Paul McCartney single then it may be his biggest selling solo hit ('Mull Of Kintyre' is credited to Wings).

'Human' is certainly not The Killers biggest selling single but, chartwise, it's their most successful top 40 hit, with 20 weeks spent inside the top 40. At the time it would have been their biggest selling single too.

Thanks for the thread Gezza, it's been very entertaining.

Awwww the Frog chorus is a guilty pleasure. The Christmas chart of 1984 was legendary though.

I don't recall anyone mentioning that in the original thread, I never even considered it :o Fantastic song, definitely should've been number 1 out of that awful top 3, but it's held up way better over the years, if only it had been released outside of Q4! D:

Thanks for all the work put into this, been a great thread!

Human is a great song. Shocked but glad to see it on top here. A shame it was up against the stuff it was in late 2008, I remember me and my mates at uni couldn’t stop singing along whenever it came on in a pub. Great times.

Would never have guessed that Human would top this, but I guess sales were low for most of 2008 with many of the year's top sellers arriving in Q4. A great song too - so it seems The Killers have both the unluckiest and bestselling songs not to reach the Top 2, as well as the best ever #3 as per the Ultimate #3s rate!

Thanks Gezza for compiling and running this very entertaining thread.

2008 was interesting as downloads increased a huge amount during the year and overall sales were beginning to look pretty healthy again. However at the top of the chart they remained really sluggish for most of the year - it was almost as though record companies hadn’t got their head round how to really promote a digital record. Human was released right around the time this all changed, and it turned out to be a permanent shift as there was never a sub 40k number 1 again until the streaming era.

Thanks for a great thread Gezza!

It's a shame that The Killers don't have any #1 hits to their name, if only 'Human' had got there!

Thank you Gezza for all of the effort put into this thread, it's been fascinating to follow. ^_^

Despite peaking one place higher at #2, 'When You Were Young' would've only been #1 in 5 chart weeks of its respective year (2006)!

Brilliant thread as always, Gezza, looking forward to the next one :D

I love The Killers... they're second only to twenty-one pilots in my book. It's a shame they've never had an official No.1 single.

Human is certainly one of their best songs, but never would have thought it would be no.1 here.

This thread was really enjoyable to follow. Thank you.

Christmas 1984 was massive as a whole - one of the legendary Christmas charts!

Thanks for the great countdown Gezza!

What an amazingly interesting thread !!!

Gezza do you know if Dannii Minogue was unlucky in any chart week with the following releases?

1997 - All I Wanna Do #4 72,000 (opening week sales)

2001 - Who Do You Love Now? #3 41,000 (opening week sales)

2003 - I Begin To Wonder #2 33,000 (opening week sales)

If you're asking me to apply the criteria of the thread to those songs then:

AIWD- would have been No 1 in one week of 1997

WDYLN- Would never have made No 1

IBTW- ineligible as it peaked at No 2.

What an amazingly interesting thread !!!

1997 was such a high sales ear that there is only 1 week in the entire year where the #1 sold less than 72,000 (51,281 for 'I Believe I Can Fly' by R Kelly)

2001 - the lowest number 1 sale of the year was 47,435 ('Rollin'' by Limp Bizkit)

2003 - depending on the exact sale a maximum of 2 number 1s could have sold less than IBTW ('Sound Of The Underground - Girls Aloud 33,471 // 'Make Luv - Room 5 32,500)
