21. The Beatles - Something / Come Together 1227pts

Writers - George Harrison / John Lennon, Paul McCartney

Top scores - Jade 49, Uls2000 48, StoneDragon 47

Low scores - Nick F1 1, Leonardo 3, Mack 5

Average score - 26.1

Taken from the 'Abbey Road' album, this was the first time the Beatles had released a single containing songs already available to listen to on an album. Something was also the first song written by George Harrison to appear on the A side of a Beatles single. A cover version by Shirley Bassey also got to number 4, scoring 29 points in the first round.

'Stereo Love' is definitely one of the best dance songs of its era, has aged wonderfully as well

My vote for The Beatles was based on 'Come Together' but I do like 'Something' a lot as well, just not as familiar with it.

Two of my Top 6 out at once. :nocheer:

Stereo Love is pure timeless magic. The accordions and the thick accents in the vocals are so atmospheric and make it a unique crossover hit with a proper Eastern European feel.

Come Together is great but it’s Something that really got my points - George packed so much explosive emotion into that ballad. How did that stunning double A Side only make #4 when the nice but much more lightweight Ballad of John and Yoko was #1 a few months before?

Not crazy about any of those last 3, I wouldn't put them even in my top 100 #4s

I think it must have been the fact that Something/Come Together were already available on their parent album as King Rollo said but yeah both are stunning and deserved to get to #1.

Those last few are all brilliant  like Julian my preference of the two Beatles songs is 'Something' - George really shines on 'Abbey Road' with both that and 'Here Comes The Sun'.

This was Garbage's highest charting single and the first of their six top 10 hits. The bassline was sampled from 'Train In Vain' by The Clash. It gets into the top 20 by winning a tie-break over Something/Come Together with one 50 point score.

Backed by Phil Spector's 'wall of sound' this was one of just three top 40 hits for the Ronettes. Ronnie Spector was the only Ronette to sing on the recording. Brian Wilson declared it to be "the greatest pop record ever made", often playing it over and over again for hours. Released in 1963, it's the oldest song in the final and wins a tie-break over 'What You Waiting For?' with three 50 point scores.

love the Garbage song, they were such a great band and the debut album is phenomenal

Gwen is 90% of the times incredible, but not with that single

Surprised Be My baby is top 20, wouldn't put it top 100 tbf

Shame on anyone who put Be My Baby in their bottom ten - this is in all time classic!! :) xxx
Great to see Garbage get in the Top 20! Less so Gwen, definitely not one of my favourites by her

Be my baby is a great song.

It was great to be reminded of Stereo Love too. Listened to it a lot back then and felt the same vibes now.

I think I’ve lost most of my top 10 now. But.. I’ve made a playlist and been listening to all these songs again, some after years of not having listened to them.

Don't think I'd have predicted either The Ronettes or Garbage making the top 20 over some of the songs that have gone out already!
