Relieved that the #1 has finally switched over now *.* techno techno techno techno

also I'm glad that Duran Duran turned their recent fortunes around with 'Ordinary World', stunning song about dealing with the loss of a best friend.

Total sales for the year were 56,276,000 so weekly that would be an average of 1,082,000 a week (obviously it wouldn't be like that in reality with the higher sales towards the end of the year so probably about 800k a week at this point.

I was familiar with Love Song For A Vampire from that first Now album I bought, but I wish my local radio station had given Little Bird even a fraction of the plays they gave to Why and Walking On Broken Glass.

Lovesong for a Vampire is Annie Lennon's best song ever, absolutely fantastic

Together with Little Bird, must be one of the best double a-side's ever

also glad Duran Duran made it into the top 10, great song and easily their best ever

Edited by Bjork

But best song of the week debuted at #12, St Etienne - You're in a Bad Way

just pop perfection! their first top 20 hit

Thanks! That would probably explain why 15,000 sales was enough to get into the top 10.

Yeh I echo the points about Duran Duran. Weird to see them in the top 10 with the new bands like East 17 etc and to think I watched the old TOTP episodes from 1983 when they were the biggest new band. Now they are like old friends returning showing why they one of the best of that era!

20TH FEBRUARY

Well as it turned out I was part correct last week when I predicted that 2 Unlimited would hold on the top spot, it was immediately under threat as it started the week down in third place behind Annie Lennox and our highest new entry but in the end it dispensed swiftly with Lennox who ends the week at No 3 again with sales up 51% to 54,000.

In the end 2 Unlimited retained the top spot overtaking that new entry right at the death and had to increase its sales by 28% to do it by the skin of their teeth with 65,000 copies sold.

Onto that new entry then and step forward Take That, “Why Can’t I Wake Up With You” appears on their debut album as a rather straightforward ballad but it’s been remixed by S & P Jervier, who previously worked magic on Bel Biv Devoe and the subsequent solo career of Ralph Tresvant, to give the boys a more urban mix of their song. It flew off the shelves in the early part of the week and generated a lead that most thought was uncatchable and was helped by the boys presenting “The Big Breakfast” all week, but it ran out of steam at the final hurdle selling 64,500, under 500 copies away from becoming their first chart topper, the album also re-enters the top 10 in sympathy.

Popularly touted as a future chart topper, Whitney Houston’s new single “I’m Every Woman” is also new in the top 5 as it debuts at No 5 (34,000). It was famously written by Ashford & Simpson and given to Chaka Khan who hit No 11 in 1978 with it and then No 8 in 1989 as a remix, Whitney’s version was of course made for the “Bodyguard” film and soundtrack and is produced by Narada Michael Walden and Clivilles & Cole and if you keep your eyes open you’ll see Houston’s mother, Chaka Khan, and Valerie Simpson in the promo for the track. Whitney’s other single “I Will Always Love You” slips 2-4 (35,000) meaning that she becomes the first act to score two top 5 hits in the same week since Madonna back in 1985.

In the bottom half of the top 10 Rolf Harris lifts 9-7 (26,000) to represent the highest position the Led Zeppelin classic has ever reached, meanwhile East 17 drop 5-6 (30,000), West End Featuring Sybil dive 4-8 (25,000), Duran Duran reverse 6-8 (24,000) and M People slip 8-10 (16,000).

1- NO LIMIT- 2 Unlimited (65,000)

2- WHY CAN’T I WAKE UP WITH YOU- Take That (64,500)

3- LITTLE BIRD/ LOVE SONG FOR A VAMPIRE- Annie Lennox (54,000)

4- I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU- Whitney Houston (35,000)

5- I’M EVERY WOMAN- Whitney Houston (34,000)

6- DEEP- East 17 (30,000)

7- STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN- Rolf Harris (26,000)

8- THE LOVE I LOST- West End Ft Sybil (25,000)

9- ORDINARY WORLD- Duran Duran (24,000)

10- HOW CAN I LOVE YOU MORE (REMIX)- M People (16,000)

I never realised how close the top 2 were this week. Take That so close to their first number 1!
Just read through this was a fascinating read looking forwards to reading the rest of the 90s especially spice girls in 96 onwards 😍

oh didn't know either it has been so close and that TT could have easily been #1

kinda glad they didn't, Why Can't I Wake Up is a bit mediocre and undeserved of #1 imho

I think I'd only heard 'Why Can't I Wake Up With You' once before that TOTP episode (from doing a marathon of #2 singles) - really has not been enduring at all for them!

That TT single is garbage, glad it stalled at #2.

Annie selling way more than I’d have guessed, unlucky to never get higher than #3

Funnily I didn't recall that Take That single at all, always thought Could It be Magic had been the last single from their debut and Pray had been the follow-up
That TT peak symbolised the fanbase they had amassed through 1992 and if the music was apt in the next era they would be no1 artists. We all know now what the outcome would be. Less Brother Beyond more Wham!

Ordinary World is the best Duran Duran single imo, absolutely flawless.

To echo some other comments here I couldn't even hum you that Take That song without actively listening to it now tbh, no idea how it goes which is odd given how enduring many of their other 90s tracks have been. Given that I guess it's justified that it didn't get to #1.

I know Led Zep never released Stairway To Heaven as a single but still oof at that being the only version of it to go top 10. Can we do a Stranger Things on the original to rectify this?

Another big supporter of the double A side from Annie, here.

I don't think TT have performed Why Can't I Wake Up With You since their Ultimate Tour back in 2006. It was left off their Odyssey reworked hits album too so I guess they don't rate it much either.

They had so much better to come - and beforehand - and it's a classic example of a boyband with a big fanbase propelling a forgettable song to a high peak due to their status at the time. These songs don't usually hang around long though and often stick out in discographies full of more enduring and long-running hits - see also Isn't It A Wonder by Boyzone, Gotta Be You by One Direction, Hey Child by East 17, I Found You by The Wanted. No doubt there are many more.

I've heard each of those songs numerous times, including the Take That one and I honestly couldn't tell you how they go.

Well, actually that's sadly not quite true of that awful One Direction song. And I remember the accordion in The Wanted track, but that was the point they really started losing it.
