Posted August 30, 20222 yr Huge album chart battle incoming between Arctic Monkeys comeback album The Car and Taylor Swift's 10th album Midnights, both being released on Oct 21 Who you think it's gonna win? I think it's a very interesting chart battle and more than anything I'm very surprised they're going head to head. Arctic Monkeys announced first so Taylor knew what she was doing when picking up the date. Of course in terms of the US, no doubt Taylor will win but in the UK not so sure... so who do yo reckon?
August 30, 20222 yr Author Here's how their last albums did: Red TV 2021 = 72,000 Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino 2018 = 86,000
August 30, 20222 yr I’d like to think Arctic Monkeys would win. I voted for them but you can never be too sure.
August 30, 20222 yr Yeah I'm really surprised two huge artists are both going head to head and it's going to be a shame that one of these two artists is going to lose their number one streak (Arctics of course with a 100% number one strike rate). I *think* the Arctics will win (and voted as such) but I wouldn't rule out Taylor pulling something out of the bag and delivering one of the chart shocks of the year. It's going to be an exciting chart week at any rate - unless of course one of them moves their release date, which could quite plausibly happen.
August 30, 20222 yr I wouldn’t be surprised if Arctic Monkeys get to no 1 on release week and Taylor the following week. I think her streams will hold up a lot better than Arctic Monkeys, especially on week 2. Assuming there are no other big releases the following week of course.
August 30, 20222 yr I'd love for Taylor to get the #1, i'm not sure what arctic monkeys are on in terms of presales, but i read somewhere that over 70k physical copies of taylors album have been pre-ordered in the us alone already, and thats with only one vinyl, cd and cassette, so i expect that she'll add more variants on and maybe that'll give her the edge
August 30, 20222 yr Taylor could very well rise to #1 even if she doesn't get there in the first week indeed - after all both 'folklore' and 'evermore' had multiple weeks at #1 (albeit the latter requiring a week with a hilariously low bar but still). I do think it'll be AM still but it's hard to predict Taylor given how unexpectedly well 'Red (Taylor's Version)' did on physicals (plus that we know nearly nothing about this era so far lol).
August 30, 20222 yr Taylor will go to number 1. It’s original material and she’ll pull some tricks out of the bag. She won’t move the date either. The last album did really well and was a glorified re-release.
August 30, 20222 yr Combining Folkore’s first week with the vinyl release week it’s around 51k, similar to Lover’s first week numbers so I’m expecting more around that number for Taylor. Red TV is a bit of an anomaly due to the huge amount of signed CDs released, which she could of course do again, but if not I think AM will take this fairly easily
August 30, 20222 yr Big battle I'd say but think arctic monkeys will do it although taylors team will put up a good fight and pull out all the stops.
August 30, 20222 yr Just because it’s been so long since an Arctic Monkeys album (and Tranquility Base was a concept album really anyway), I think they’re favourites - everyone’s going to lap up a return to proper melodies from them haha
August 30, 20222 yr Just because it’s been so long since an Arctic Monkeys album (and Tranquility Base was a concept album really anyway), I think they’re favourites - everyone’s going to lap up a return to proper melodies from them haha Is it a return to proper melodies though? Going by the new single, I'd say not! It sounds like, just like 'Tranquility Base', they're not going for a commercial sound.
August 30, 20222 yr Taylor easily I voted Taylor - more from wishful thinking though. But why do you think easily? Curious to know lol
August 30, 20222 yr Arctic Monkeys, my thoughts going into this thread were similar to Louis' really - I think it'll only be close if Taylor's team pull out the signed CDs again Looking forward to both albums ^_^
August 30, 20222 yr I voted Taylor - more from wishful thinking though. But why do you think easily? Curious to know lol I voted AM even though I have a niggling feeling about Taylor. The fact is, if it is close, her label will pull out all the stops to get there whereas AM won’t.
