It would've done much better than going to Number 1 on its first week.

Nice to see Robbie claiming another No.1 album, even if it is a compilation. It’ll be a 14th in total and will move him to 2nd place just behind the Beatles for the most No1 albums in the U.K. if he holds on. I’ll be interested to see how this holds up next week.

Singles chart is rather dire again, although I think I’d take Lewis to be no1 over the other two dance tunes. We’ve had some cracking dance music this year, but that blue da ba dee rip off is just awful.

I think Robbie will easily overtake the Beatles eventually as while im not a huge fan myself i think he has at least 2-3 more number 1 albums left in him.

A weird thing about this Robbie album is that his official store refers to it as being his “thirteenth studio album”, and it’s listed in his studio albums section on his Wikipedia discography. This album isn’t what I’d define as being a studio album. It’s like a pseudo Greatest Hits album, a compilation. Odd marketing!

Aside from that, I was pretty surprised by how strong his opening midweek sales are. It’s felt rather low-key to me, but maybe I just wasn’t paying close enough attention!

Yeah I noticed that on Wikipedia today too. I guess there’s enough new tracks on there to fill a studio album but the tracking list isn’t really set out like a double disc studio album/compilation in the way say Olly Murs’ ‘I Know You Know’ album was.

Also impressed with his midweek sales and it had either passed me or I forgot that he was tied with Elvis for most number ones by a soloist and will end up having the record by himself this week.

With regards to Robbie, I seem to remember he put his album up for pre-order after the Soccer Aid event when he sang 'Angels'.

That probably added some nice sales for him! Pleasing to see either way!

That is pretty weird re Robbie (and it seems Wikipedia editors aren't all on the same page with it, it is in the studio albums section of the 'Robbie Williams discography' article but not in the summary 'discography' section of Robbie's main article, and it is described as a compilation on the article for the album itself albeit with the 'background' section quoting it being his thirteenth studio album).

I guess the fact that they are all technically new recordings, even if mostly of previously released songs (I think I only count 4 songs there which are entirely new so not quite a full album's worth!), makes it a bit of a grey area. But then Take That's 'Odyssey' seems to be unambiguously considered a greatest hits and that was also re-recordings (or at least remixes?) rather than a straightforward compilation. A bit of an odd one ~

edit: even the OCC article for the album mids describes it as both his 13th studio album and a greatest hits

maybe they consider it a (RW) covers album
Not many of ‘Odyssey’ is re-recordings, most of it is the original songs with some spoken word bits added occasionally. It’s not far off a standard GH.

I get calling it a Greatest Hits (as the songs are reimaginings), but it is very much a studio album if the songs were predominantly recorded with the aim of making this body of work... No? I think this can very happily fit with both.

I'm not sure how anyone could consider this a compilation though... By that logic, any cover album is also a compilation in my eyes. This is effectively an album of him covering his own tracks, and some new ones thrown in.

Eh I'd say an album of re-recordings of your own songs is quite different to a covers album.

I guess this is kind of like Taylor Swift's 'Taylor's Version' albums which is sort of a category of release unto itself, except a compilation version of that concept.

a re-recording of. studio album would be a new studio album

a re-recording of all your hits is a... greatest hits not a new studio album lol
