Biography

Solána Rowe had a weird time growing up. Jersey suburbs, orthodox Muslim household, parents working their way through corporate America, wanted to fit in, couldn’t. She got bullied for wearing a hijab after 9/11 and became the kind of teenager who, on at least one occasion, drew the cops into a chase while joyriding in the family car. “[My parents] were only strict because they were reasonable,” she told Apple Music in 2017. “Like, they’re black, they come from the South and Midwest, they don’t come from anything…they’re not tryna take a gang of risks.” That Rowe had her own ideas about how to live didn’t help. “I rebelled really hard, and I learned everything the hard way,” she said. “I’m very hard-headed, very curious.” It’s a balance—rebellious but insecure, expressive but self-conscious, dreamy but alert—that has made Rowe resonant, but also an anomaly, the kind of artist who doesn’t ignore her quirks or contradictions, but brings them to the table in all their messy human glory. After self-releasing a couple of EPs in her early twenties (she took her name from the Nation of Islam’s Supreme Alphabet—Savior Zig-Zag Allah), she became the first female artist signed to Top Dawg Entertainment, joining future collaborators Kendrick Lamar and Jay Rock. Released in 2017, her debut album, Ctrl, put her at the vanguard of contemporary R&B, mixing the expressivity of classic soul with a hazy, synth-heavy atmosphere and a playful sense of lyricism that brought Rowe’s inner monologue out. “Even with the heels and tighter clothes and other things, I’m still just me,” she said. “I still have a lot of anxiety about the world, and my thoughts and what people think about my thoughts.” - Apple Music

Oops ended up missing most the chart! Yes at Meghan smashing, so glad she’s getting another hit!! ❤️ Haven’t stopped stanning her one bit over the past few years so glad that paid off in the end!

Snow on the beach and lavender haze sounding wonderful on the radio and so glad both made top 5!! <3

I’m good and psycho remain bops. first time hearing miss you and that was diabolical, those vocals jesus wept

AND TAYLOR FINALLY GETTING ANOTHER #1 :cheeseblock: :cheeseblock: so so deserved and overdue, and anti-hero is one of the best songs of the year so we love to see it!!! Probs controversial here but as much as I adore anti-hero, it’s not my favourite of Taylor’s two #1’s! 😮

So it is the 4th time within a year that one artist has held 3 of the Top 4, with every possible combination of those positions happening once:

#2, #3 & #4: Ed Sheeran (= release week)

#1, #2 & #4: Adele (30 release week)

#1, #2 & #3: Harry Styles (Harry's House release week)

#1, #3 & #4: Taylor Swift (Midnights release week)

 TayTay, have heard a 15 second clip of this from Jade's personal chart and it sounded potentially good from that so should be comfortably better than 'Look What You Made Me Do' :P (from the songs Jade charted the one that pricked my ears up the most was 'Maroon' - but will see what I think of the album when I get around to listening to it like a month from now :basil:)
First time I've listened to the chart in a while. The person hosting it has 0 personality and is shocking! No effort made at all.
'Unholy' is still sounding decent aside from Sam's voice which I just don't take to but pleased it didn't stop Taylor getting her deserved and overdue 2nd UK #1  fantastic song and video and a crime LWYMMD was her only other #1 as well.

I'm just glad she has another #1 that we can actually CLAIM! :cheeseblock:

Anti-Hero is fantastic! Such a great song. My fave off the album. I love LH and like SOTB but I'd have preferred some other tracks to get the recognitions instead. Labyrinth, Midnight Rain, Mastermind, Question...?, You're On Your Own, Kid & Would've, Should've, Could've all deserved placings. I'd have loved to have seen how many she would have had in the T40.

Anti-Hero is my favourite song of hers in YEARS

Absolutely phenomenal IMO, chorus stuck in my head all week

Song of the year for me and probably her best, it's brilliant.

If something replaces snow on the beach next week (which will probs happen). I’m def team Karma cos that needs to smash! (And it rly could, I don’t think it’s doing as well in the UK compared to the US but in the US it’s top 5 on spotify despite only being track 11 on the album!). Also here for you’re on your own kid, what a beauty and also deserves top 10 ❤️

Still so shook Taylor finally has another #1 after all this time 😭😍 can’t wait to see the album sales!

Taylor and her ex Harry are the only two people to have scored a chart double this year
YESSSSS TAYLOR DID IT!!!! This would've been her 4th #1 if it wasn't for Christmas.

That darned annual massive holiday x

This is the most beautiful thing that’s ever happened :cheeseblock:

yaya for Ant-Hero <3

Cardigan & Exile deserved #1 too

and Blank Space, Shake it Off, Champagne Problems, Betty, August, Illicit Affairs etc etc :D

Edited by Bjork

I do wish 'folklore' and 'evermore' got this kind of chart domination too as 'cardigan' and 'willow' would both have made fantastic #1s but ah well, I guess they're just not as wide appealing as her pop stuff.

I appreciated folklore and evermore for being something different from Taylor but neither really grabbed me that much, I'm glad Midnights is rightly blowing them out of the water as it's much better (and, to be fair, much more to my taste).

The one week I get a Friday evening shift at work is the week Taylor dominates 😭😭😭😭😭

wish i was listening live, but i'm so happy she got another #1! can't believe she's only had 2, she deserved so many more

Also 200K album sales?!?!?! WOWWWWW
