Back-to-the-90s-730x521.jpg

Hello everyone. So I finally stopped creating a personal chart this year, it just kinda drifted away around about February and I never found the time to catch it up. To celebrate/commiserate the end of my chart, I thought I would revisit the first decade of my #1s (my chart began right at the beginning of 1990 which is a pleasingly neat starting point). I've thought about the different ways I could do this and considered just counting them all down in order, or counting them all down in terms of chart points etc but in the end I've opted for a method that should hopefully combine how much I loved them at the time and how much I love them now.

I've been busy ranking all 266 songs in two ways:

• How many chart points the song accumulated at the time in the 90s

• How many plays the track currently has within my iTunes library

When combined, I think this should give a reasonable ranking in terms of songs I loved most during the 90s but also those songs that have stayed with me the most over time. I know this is technically a personal chart but I feel most of the people who are likely to be vaguely interested frequent this part of the forum so I'm going to count it down in here instead ^_^

I pretty much still like everything that made #1 for me, even the more questionable ones have really good memories attached to them, so this should act as a pretty comprehensive idea of what I was digging during the decade.

This will be 100% solid gold.

I think there should be a personal chart part of 20th Century Retro. I have a new personal chart in the works.

Oh this could be very interesting - I've had a look at the no.1s and quality aside, some of them are harderned fanbase blink and you miss them moments ('Block Rockin' Beats', 'Beetlebum') vs major mainstream cultural moments (Cher's 'Believe', 'Everything I Do'. That wasn't the case in the 80s where a no.1 had to have universal appeal but far more pronounced in the 00s where for the first half it was all about held back releases and marketing.

To pick an overall winner is difficult (although I have one in mind myself as such a perfect pop song) so intrigued by this!

London Boys to win even if they are 1989 😅

It's actually a very mainstream list on the whole, my knowledge of music didn't extend too far past the weekly top 40. I'll be trying to note the songs that were kept from #1 as I go along though as there are many classics that I love now that I just didn't appreciate at the time.

I'd also been thinking of doing a personal chart of each year, starting from 1980. I'd thought of putting it in the Countdowns and EOY Charts forum, but it could go here instead I suppose (not that I'm expecting many comments either way though).

I'd be interested in seeing it... I've been tempted to go back through the 80s and choose my #1s each week. I suspect it would be a rather tasteful look back as it would be impossible to know what I would have liked at the time - no doubt I'd have fallen for some of the tackier songs that I don't care for now.
Aw that's a bit of a shame that your chart fizzled out after running for that long - interested to see what stuff pops up here anyhoo.

Here for this

I am predicting an ALL STAR TOP FIVE

Des'ree!

Tin Tin Out!

Shampoo!

Boyzone!

Robson & Jerome!

I just realized that I also have my 90s number 1s in another thread. Could be a good time to dust them off.

266 | Heaven 17 - Temptation (Brothers In Rhythm Mix)

So we begin with a song that was originally a hit in the 80s but found a new lease of life in the 90s thanks to the ever reliable Brothers in Rhythm. This was my introduction to Heaven 17 and I remember loving the high drama of it all, it prompted me to buy the remix singles of Fascist Groove Thang and Penthouse and Pavement that followed in the 90s but neither were anywhere near as good as this. It bows out first thanks to me never listening to this version these days, even the original doesn't have that many plays either. Looking back it blocked Out Of Space from making #1, even though the Prodigy's song spent far longer on my chart.

The stats:

Date: 22 November 1992

Weeks: Two

1990s chart rank: 256

2020s plays rank: 262

Biggest song it kept from #1:

(#2 w/c 29 November 1992)

Biggest fave now that I didn't love at the time:

Oh nice! I'll be def be checking this out, I know our tastes match really well so I don't doubt there'll be a lot of my faves appearing here.

Coincidentally, I'm broadcasting my Top 100 singles of the 1990s on Sunday - New Year's Day. I compiled the list for Pitchfork in the autumn and wanted to play it out, sadly the majority of my picks failed to make their list. 😔

Also... I've only just added in my iTunes plays for each of the songs and the top few on this countdown are going to be genuine WTF moments to most people :kink: Ah well, I guess that's the perils of just ranking two lists, you lose the sense of scale.
