January 7, 20232 yr I guess Babylon Zoo were the original sped-up, pitch-altering tease experiment and that did well to lure in purchases  maybe people are fascinated by extremes (or have short attention spans that make sped up versions appealing and find the slowed versions more atmospheric or something) I don't totally get the appeal myself, for instance the slowed down version of 'Mary On A Cross' by Ghost really tanks the listening experience of a song I otherwise love
January 7, 20232 yr Hate hate them with a passion especially the slowed down+reverb ie Another Love!! less issue with the sped up, some even improve ie Oliver Tree & Robin Schulz - Miss You
January 7, 20232 yr I don't really get it. Slowed down versions especially. It's like when we had 7" singles and played them at 33rpm, or albums in 45rpm. But we used to find it funny, not a preferred way to listen to a song. Sped-ups... Escapism isn't too bad Back That Up To The Beat isn't good Worst I've heard is sped-up Somewhere Only We Know by Keane, which just angered me as the original is so good.

As a child, I used to listen to slowed down versions of songs too on Windows Media Player because I found it funny, I slowed it down more than the current TikTok slowed down remixes do. I remember listening to Take That- Patience and Phil Collins - I Wish It Would Rain Down slowed down to 50% speed - ballads are funny slowed down! For a non ballad Hips Don't Lie was funny slowed down too I remember!
January 7, 20232 yr The sped up Escapism makes RAYE sound like one the chipmunks :D Personally I prefer the sped up version of that song lol
January 7, 20232 yr Seems like a trend that's very easy to ignore unless you're an active TikTok user (I don't think I've ever heard a single one of them as it's not something I care to look up). I don't have anything against these versions existing if people like them more than the original for whatever reason, it's a few extra streams for the artist, all counts the same as the original track and you can ignore them if you don't like them as the originals still exist. Just like any other remix. I guess if the radio starts playing these tempo altered versions over the originals then that's where it might start to bleed into being annoying for me. (which tbf Radio 1 did for the one time they played Ghost on the chart show lol)
January 8, 20232 yr It's to do with what kind of video they used for for example a "thirst trap" would be more likely to be made to a slowed down version
January 8, 20232 yr depending on the speed change used, a cool stylistic alteration of the song, particularly sped up versions. Between 1.15 and 1.25 tends to work very well is what I found when I used to make nightcore out of Audacity, particularly if the production is electronic and/or the singer has a medium-pitched voice (so as to fit a high-adrenaline version of the song without sounding too shrill). Slowed down stuff can also be really interesting sometimes, but tends to need a bit more attention on the part of the remixer. definitely fits with TikTok's MO of having the music fit to the situation, and like I do with everything TikTok I ignore it but changing the speed of a song to have a new way of enjoying it is entirely valid.
January 9, 20232 yr The Chipmunks had speeded-up versions of hits back in the 50's and 60's and beyond, and Pinky & Perky used to do it in the 60's. The new variation is on a par with that, just without the cute furry animals.... :teresa:
January 9, 20232 yr The algorithm likes shorter clips as it circulates ones where people have watched 100% of it so if it's one with lots of lyrics (e.g. Escapism) the person can mime the words of the snippet they like and get their point across in less time. The normal version of a song is often more popular than any variation on streaming platforms. Edited January 9, 20232 yr by Megan_
That doesn't explain slowed & reverb though. (Or that there's a popular sped up version of 'snowfall' by Øneheart and reidenshi which is literally an instrumental). There might theoretically be some cases where sped up versions allow a song's hook / viral segment to fit into the length of a TikTok more easily but I don't think that's anything close to the main reason for the trend. Also it's only very recently that any sped up versions have charted on Spotify at all and only a single case where the sped up version has charted higher than the original (Hotel Ugly - Shut Up My Moms Calling, and even that started out charting lower) so yes it is largely still the originals that get the lion's share of the streaming benefit even when a speed-shifted version is the one that's gone viral. Guess we'll see if Hotel Ugly is pointing towards that trend starting to change though.
January 9, 20232 yr To be fair, the normal version nearly always does better in the charts/Spotify. It's just to fit a mood or tone of a video on Tik Tok which is why they're popular I think.
January 9, 20232 yr I don't get the trend either, but I guess it's ok if people enjoy it... I don't get on TikTok that much, so it only bothers me when they pester my Release Radar playlist on Spotify! But I would enjoy watching the dance scene from "Wednesday" with the normal version of Bloody Mary, not some Sped Up + Reverb/Sped Up + Mash Up or whatever on it. (I haven't watched the series but I know that's not the original song they used for the scene) Anyways, I'm not totally opposed if people enjoy listening to them but please don't let them overtake the originals in any occasion!
January 11, 20232 yr It was Bucks Fizz that started it by telling us you've got to speed it up, and then you've got to slow it down!
