Thanks to the 42 people who participated in last week's poll :jump:

Official results from week 9:

[ 26 ] Gorillaz - Silent Running (feat. Adeleye Omotayo) (#97)

[ 19 ] KAROL G and Shakira - TQG (#88)

[ 5 ] Superstar Pride - PAINTING PICTURES (#33)

[ 4 ] JayO - 22 (#67)

BuzzJack's favourite top 100 hit for 2023 week 9 and auto-qualifying for the March monthly round is Gorillaz - Silent Running (feat. Adeleye Omotayo).

As expected it's a pretty easy victory this week for British virtual band Gorillaz featuring the somewhat elusive Adeleye Omotayo (apparently a former backing vocalist for Amy Winehouse), the synthpop track 'Silent Running' was the 5th and final pre-release teaser track from their 8th album 'Cracker Island' and dropped back in January but did not make the chart on release, only belatedly scraping in upon the album release. Good timing for it to snatch a win in a week with very little credible competition. Nonetheless it still 'only' got the vote of a little over half of voters and faced perhaps closer than expected competition from another team up between a first time charting artist and a legend who's been having hits since the early 00s - KAROL G and Shakira's collab came in 7 votes behind, marking the second time this year that Shakira has come 2nd, though I expect she'll have a harder time qualifying for the yearly round this time. The other 2 songs, as expected, were also-rans with Superstar Pride just winning the very faint consolation prize of beating JayO into 3rd place, winning 5 and 4 votes respectively.

Weekly winners to date:

01 // 12/01/23 // Sub Focus and Dimension - Ready To Fly

02 // 19/01/23 // Skrillex, Fred again.. and Flowdan - Rumble

03 // 26/01/23 // Miley Cyrus - Flowers

04 // 02/02/23 // Fall Out Boy - Love From The Other Side

05 // 09/02/23 // P!nk - TRUSTFALL

06 // 16/02/23 // RAYE - Ice Cream Man.

07 // 23/02/23 // Linkin Park - Lost

08 // 02/03/23 // Lana Del Rey - A&W

09 // 09/03/23 // Gorillaz - Silent Running (feat. Adeleye Omotayo)

Qualified for the yearly round:

January // Bizarrap and Shakira - Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53 / Miley Cyrus - Flowers / Sub Focus and Dimension - Ready To Fly

Qualified for the playoff for the yearly round:

January // Fall Out Boy - Love From The Other Side

We rebound to a healthier list of 11 new entries this week, totalling 37 minutes and 5 seconds on the Spotify playlist this time. So far I've voted for all of the winners of these polls except the first one - something tells me that streak may be ending this week courtesy of another song debuting some weeks after release but we'll see. (And I'm not talking about Morgan Wallen. Though I am intrigued to see how many votes he can accrue and especially if anyone will openly admit to voting for him here. You are allowed to. But I'll judge. x)

Vote for as many or as few songs as you want and would be ideal if you can make sure you've heard all the songs before voting if possible!

You have until Saturday evening ish as usual :jump:

Analysis:

Nicki Minaj - Red Ruby Da Sleeze: Really trashy for Nicki's standard, there are some horrendous bars in this track "Guacamole with the taco, waitin' on El Chapo" 3/10

J Hope & J. Cole - On The Street: This is decent but fits better as a J. Cole song, hope is decent but J. Cole is on another level with an exception to this bar "As the moon jumps over the cow" 7/10

Zara Larsson - Can't Tame Her: This feels like a copy of Blinding Lights, the tempo, the riff and various other things. This is extremely generic however Zara does show off that she's a great vocalist so kudos for that. 4/10

MK & Dom Dolla - Rhyme Dust: This is a Banger but it does start to get quite repetitive towards the end, maybe some more vocals would have helped 6/10

Unknown T - Right Hand (feat. Knucks): Great beat with a good performance from Unknown T and a fantastic feature from Knucks! 7/10

Mimi Webb - Freezing: Firstly, I mean no offence to people who like Mimi this is only my opinion. She is ripping-off House On Fire to hopefully get another big hit, really generic and that voice... 2/10

Don Toliver - Private Landing (feat. Justin Bieber & Future): The hook is ok but Don's first verse is awful, Future really saves the track for me a great feature and the Biebs is ok. 5/10

Fred Again, The Streets & Dermot Kennedy - Mike (Desert Island Duvet): Fantastic reimagining of Berwyn, great verses from the streets as well. 8/10

Halsey - Die 4 Me: I still prefer the original tbh. 4/10

Morgan Wallen - Last Night: Honestly, i don't see the appeal of Morgan Wallen, really bland. 3/10

Metro Boomin, Travis Scott & Young Thug - Trance: This is another brilliant track from Heroes & Villains, the outro is really something to behold. 9/10

My Choices: On The Street (Just edges Right Hand), Mike (Desert Island Duvet) & Trance.

Voted Zara Larsson (a bit 80s by numbers, but it suits her and I like the shouted backing vocals on the chorus) and Fred again.. this week. Rhyme Dust is interesting, but Q-Tip - Breathe And Stop >>>
Voted for Mimi, Zara and Halsey, with Mimi’s being the best of the week. Couldn’t get into any of the others.

2. Halsey - Die 4 Me

3. Don Toliver - Private Landing (feat. Justin Bieber and Future)

4. Metro Boomin, Travis Scott and Young Thug - Trance

5. j-hope and J. Cole - on the street

10. Morgan Wallen - Last Night

11. Nicki Minaj - Red Ruby Da Sleeze

Voted for the top 2 this week. I wasn't sold on 'Can't Tame Her' on first listen but it grew on me massively. It reminds me so much of 'La Di Da' by Everglow. I'm not familiar with the Post Malone original but I really enjoyed the Halsey track. The Metro Boomin and Don Toliver tracks are both pretty decent, I might have given them a vote on another day.

J. Cole and The Streets are two of my all-time favourite artists and while I'm glad to see them get an extra top 40/top 100 hit, these particular tracks aren't their best. I'm not really a fan of BTS or Fred Again.. to be honest.

That might be Nicki Minaj's worst song yet. The 'Megan Thee Stallion' diss is pathetic. The video of her performing it live at Rolling Loud festival is embarrassing.

^ I'd recommend checking out the original 'Die For Me' - I do like Halsey's solo version too but it doesn't feel quite as complete a song as the original, which was one of my highlights from that Post Malone album.

(and I think my take on that is actually quite generous, I've seen plenty of people saying this version is way worse than the original)

Nicki Minaj - Red Ruby Da Sleeze (#30) - love this, one of her better sample uses

j-hope and J. Cole - on the street (#37) - J Cole parts decent, pretty vanilla otherwise

Zara Larsson - Can't Tame Her (#59) - really strong track! didn't expect her to go down the synthpop route

MK and Dom Dolla - Rhyme Dust (#63) - the beat is good but i don't like the vocals and there isn't much substance to it

Unknown T and Knucks - Right Hand (#70) - first rapper sounds like giggs, not bad but wouldn't play it again

Mimi Webb - Freezing (#73) - reductive pop song

Don Toliver - Private Landing (feat. Justin Bieber and Future) (#74) - loved this from the moment the first beat dropped

Fred again.., The Streets and Dermot Kennedy - Mike (desert island duvet) (#78) - dull, not a fan of spoken word over a dance beat

Halsey - Die 4 Me (#85) - pretty good by her standards, strong beat

Morgan Wallen - Last Night (#92) - this is decent, he's got a much more pleasant-sounding voice than that luke coombs fella

Metro Boomin, Travis Scott and Young Thug - Trance (#96) - it's alright but nothing particularly standout about it

Voted for Nicki, Zara, Don, Halsey & Morgan.

Mimi Webb - Freezing.

One of the non single highlights on the album for me. Though I suppose it’s a single now, I don’t know.
