April 29, 20232 yr 6 Yobnedorcia </3 Zanmatony and Kyriatine would have been in the next few outside :'(
April 29, 20232 yr Very sad to see so many calling it a day with BJSC after their DNQ this month. I truly hope that the likes of Ben’s Sanctuary, Taahino, Kyriatine and The Actual Republic of Bellamia return someday, you’ll all be very missed. :snif: Zanmatony may have not qualified this time around but thank you to all who voted, especially Aesthetica for the gold medal. Here’s the outcome of our semi final votes; +12 Q +10 Q +8 Stage Fright – Dance, Dance, Dance [Yobnedorica] +7 Q +6 Andromida – Paradox [Danæviia] +5 Q +4 Q +3 Q +2 Elderbrook & Bob Moses – Inner Light [Kyriatine] +1 UNKLE – UNKLE Main Title Theme [Freedonia] Sorry we couldn’t do more to assist you all. :(
April 29, 20232 yr Nice to get some high scores! I figured it might be a my taste but not wider taste one this month tho <3
April 30, 20232 yr Well that sucks - every time I try a solid Japanese pop banger this happens, this one was really instant for me so I thought it'd work well over here. At least my top pointers all made it through.
April 30, 20232 yr Oh ive dnq'd really gutted I loved my song this month, maybe a fairly long break is in order :/
April 30, 20232 yr 4/4 DNQs this year though, only the strong can handle this :PYou're not alone Frank, we'll get through it! I'm on a streak of 5 actually but 24th this month is higher than the last four, so I'll take that as a small victory.
April 30, 20232 yr Good to see most of my pointers made their way to the finals. TARO Bellamia's entry was #11 in my ranking, so shame it failed to join the final. Wish Zanmatony was in the other semi. That kind of M-Pop song deserved 18 points. :( Thanks for all who gave points to Eastovka, so we could return to the final. ^_^ Edited April 30, 20232 yr by Cow P
April 30, 20232 yr Lol I completely give up with ever trying to send a serious entry again at this point, that’s me completely done with that now. Back to trolling from next month (and quitting when I get bored of sending troll songs, tho I do have a troll BOP lined up next month)

It’s truly heartbreaking to see so many give up. Only the privileged who qualify every month without question should really think about how the rejection affects some members. As for me, I’m ok with my result this month, I expected it and it keeps me humble after a couple of good contests before this one, but I truly do feel sad for others who have to wait a very long time to qualify again. The criteria for qualifying seems to be to send something extraordinary and with some kind of punch, or by a vintage retro artist as that seems to be the in thing right now. Foreign entries simply do not work as many have found this month including me. So stick with basic English bops and you might have a chance to make it to the final…
April 30, 20232 yr I'm not taking a break again  I will be voting in the final because I have an entry picked out for the next contest so I don't want to have to wait two months to send it but honestly it is very disheartening when you continually dnq. For me when I was dnqing and then not voting it was during a period of time where I needed something to invest in and I used how my song did in this contest as that so once my song was booted I lost all interest and I wasn't listening to new music so didn't have an entry lined up for next time so really didn't care about the ban. I think people forget that as much as we all love music, sometimes listening to so many new tracks that often aren't your cup of tea can be quite draining mentally. I'm not organised enough nor do I have the time a lot of months to split up the listening, it's much easier for me to set a few hours one night aside. We all have stuff going on outside this forum so if people don't vote or participate they shouldn't be made to feel bad about that by certain members because you don't know what their reasoning is for skipping. This site is not always the best aid for mental health and has in my experience made it worse at times, this contest isn't even as much as an escapism as it used to be either. I'm trying to find love for stuff I used to do for fun again which is why I wanted to return to this contest so hopefully I don't regret that decision.

So stick with basic English bops and you might have a chance to make it to the final… okay I'm on the same side as you on fighting against the varying biases that our collective votes show overall, but come on man, this isn't Marxist dialectics, its ranking music. I'm real sad for my banger and it's upsetting that I can't get my love of J-Pop to mainstream here but I also now have surrogate entries that I'm behind for the final - you can't only care about your own one here, that way lies madness. it'll be forever be beyond me how basic pop ends up sometimes going ahead of music that incorporates fun instrumentation or vocal experimentation or well done lyrics (or you know, even the hint of genre exploration sometimes) but the volume of that in the contest does reduce my listening time ~ and no one listen to that last quoted sentence please because I need the odd doses of power metal and hyperpop and whatever else to stay interested

This is a good summary of why it's best not to overinvest yourself in it, just take part as and when it works for you. The contest will survive anyone taking a break. Sometimes it really is too many tracks to absorb when you also want to do musical exploration that you know you really like, which is why I definitely recommend finding yourself efficient ways to vote.
April 30, 20232 yr in an ideal contest everyone is in it to discover new songs but anyone who says that's the core reason they participate every time is a liar because there will be months, for one reason or another where the most important thing is how your own song does and so what? Why is that such a bad thing? It's as much about sharing your own stuff and hoping it gets a good reception as it is about hyping up new discoveries. Wardy is right that there is bias in BJSC, there always has been, that's not a new or outlandish statement to make in the slightest. I've always felt indie/dance music does the best, I mean look at semi two this time around. There are certain nations that always do well/vote for each other but hey we can put that down to shared taste right? Or they've cracked the BJSC code for a definite qualifier. Pop music seems to be taking a bit of a revival lately, that trend comes and goes here really but to dismiss anything poppy as being "basic" is pretty ignorant. Imo pop music is the most inclusive genre because it can get away with using all sorts of other influences, it's why it's the most accessible for a lot of people. It's called popular music for a reason.
April 30, 20232 yr For me, it's my rejection sensitivity dysphoria that kicks into overdrive every time I DNQ. There is nothing worse than choosing something I love so much that I just want to share it with the world and hope everyone likes it as much as I do, to then have everyone hate it or not like it to the level that I do.
April 30, 20232 yr Foreign entries simply do not work as many have found this month including me. So stick with basic English bops and you might have a chance to make it to the final… I just qualified with a non-English language song! I won’t weigh in too much, as I understand it may be jarring to hear from someone who didn’t DNQ on this occasion, but all I’d say is that the four songs in my votes that didn’t make it will be going straight on my ever-growing shuffle playlist and I’m sure others made great discoveries from DNQs too. Also agreed that people should come and go as they wish if they’re not feeling it at the moment.
April 30, 20232 yr I have flopped with every entry so far but I don't mind — taste is subjective. It’s just a forum contest with varying tastes in music. I’m a little baffled by some of the songs people like (I could just listen to MUNA…) but that is on me. My only real issue (and this is from very limited experience, I haven't had the time to really engage outside of listening) with the contest so far is the quick turnaround and how it benefits immediate songs, but I get it — it's a monthly contest and I'm comparing it to Unknown Pleasures. I’m more than happy to bottom every month if it means I come across something as good as 'Somewhere Near Marseilles' again.
April 30, 20232 yr see I get the rejection as well, and then I've seen multiple people tell me that my entry was in their top 15.... which seems like an indictment of how the point system works, my song was broadly liked but didn't make it to votes. The rejection (on points) sucks though even if it's nice that it was a decent discovery for some. in an ideal contest everyone is in it to discover new songs but anyone who says that's the core reason they participate every time is a liar because there will be months, for one reason or another where the most important thing is how your own song does and so what? Imo pop music is the most inclusive genre because it can get away with using all sorts of other influences, it's why it's the most accessible for a lot of people. It's called popular music for a reason. That's not what I was saying though... I enter (and point) non-basic pop fairly often! In fact I enter more pop than I don't. To the point where I'm trying to branch out away from it. And yes, a lot of the time the instinct is to care about your own song and I'm just trying to encourage people to look beyond it. Certain songs from others I'm stoked to see in the final. actually further to the above I think the point system does favour certain types of music, or at least when there's a standout dance entry (trance especially!) or indie (especially progressive long tracks) as it attracts high points.
April 30, 20232 yr and no one listen to that last quoted sentence please because I need the odd doses of power metal and hyperpop and whatever else to stay interested Not everyone can send the same thing and do as well as others, so you don't need to worry about everyone sending basic pop stuff next edition ;) Though I have to admit there is a good number of foreign language bops out this month :(
