With us discussing Leona in the Survivor. Got me thinking about doing a thread like this. I can't remember if one was done in 2008 when she was in the chart with her cover of it or not but anyway for discussion points which is the best for you. For some this is a no brainer but thought I'd still throw it out there and it fits nicely into the 2000's having them released in 04 and 08 respectively!

For me it was and still will be Snow Patrol. I did like Leona's to begin with and for a while too but chart and radio overplay killed it for me and I find hers annoying nowadays. Doesn't touch the super original for me.

Snow Patrol absolutely, it's one of my favourite ever songs. It's beautifully structured, sung with both softness and power, and it's stunning guitar solo really makes it one of the classic post-Britpop stadium anthems. Much as I love it, Fix You and a lot of Coldplay's later work has a lot to owe to this.

I think the original stripped-down Live Lounge cover Leona did was performed very well and works in that context, but the X Factorised single version is just typical, formulaic fluff from them. The choir is not needed and she oversings it in the climax, the genuine emotion of the song feels undercut with urge to make a quick buck (though it was certainly light years ahead of her other awful covers of Hurt and Stop Crying Your Heart Out). It always really annoyed me that this was so widely regarded as equalling or surpassing the original, I'm pleased it's mainly the original that's stayed in the public consciousness since.

Yeah, just repeating what I said in the other thread, but definitely Leona for me! I do like the original and I could see why people do prefer the understated beauty of Snow Patrol’s but as a fan of big female vocallists, Leona really does sound as good as it gets on this track. Probably my favourite vocal tracks of hers and the build up to the final chorus makes me feel very emotional to this day.

Pretty much this, entirely.

I adore Snow Patrol's original and I will also consider that one of my personal favourite songs. But there's just something so wonderfully empowering about Leona's version. Like Rob said, no matter how many times I hear it, when that final chorus hits, it gets me and really hits the emotional spot it needs to. It's euphoric and glorious.

Love moments but Leona’s version was a ‘stop what you are doing and just listen’ moment

Snow Patrol.

Because although Leona is great, she is just recreating someone else's emotions so its not quite the same.

I think Snow Patrol's version just pips it, but I like both just about equally and feel like they both do different things.

At least it's a good version, unlike how she bast*rdised 'Stop Crying Your Heart Out' and 'Hurt'.
