As Beatport has documented, the second half of the previous decade saw a renaissance in jagged, jump-up sounds that propelled a whole crop of producers to the forefront of the genre. A vanguard of established artists — most notably the Kings of the Rollers — led the charge, but Bou and others were one row back, crafting their sound and shaping drum & bass’s roughshod evolution. After a friend introduced him to drum & bass through the free party scene, Bou got hooked on YouTube production tutorials and the SoundCloud jump-up community from the age of 16. Now 25 years old, Bou is a highly successful artist and touring DJ, having recently remixed both High Contrast’s classic “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang” and DJ Fresh’s “Gold Dust.” With an upward-trending trajectory and a sound that has begun to move into more radio-friendly territory, Bou is entering the next chapter of his story. Bou’s trajectory has matched the rising fortunes of the genre as a whole, and it’s impossible to deny that he has played a central role in the rough-and-tumble jump-up sounds that have defined the genre. Should drum & bass take a turn toward the mainstream, it seems likely he’ll help write that chapter too. - Beatportal Top 100 Chart History Bou 2021 84 Streetside (Bru-C & Bou) -NAS- 2023 24 Closer (feat. The London band's 2009 debut album, Lungs, came stacked with rousing anthems like “Kiss with a Fist” and “Dog Days Are Over,” all propelled by pounding rhythms and orchestral strings and fuelled by a desire—or rather a need—for catharsis. “With songwriting, I really like to embody the things I was afraid of as a child. I like to kind of embody that voice,” singer-songwriter Florence Welch explained to Apple Music. “It’s like an exorcism almost.” That passion for delving into the darker outskirts of the mind infuses everything the band does, including bringing their cinematic sound to the screen with the 2016 release of short film The Odyssey, whose Dante-inspired scenes are strung together with heartache-drenched songs from 2015’s How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful. That braveness also dictates not only Welch’s lyrics—which hit on topics as taboo as suicide and self-destruction (“The End of Love”) and as profound as simply letting go (the Grammy-nominated “Shake It Out”)—but also the way she delivers them, with the bewitching wail of a siren unleashed. - Spotify Top 100 Chart History 2008 51 Kiss With A Fist -1- 2008 21 Dog Days Are Over -2/8- MILLIONAIRE 2009 12 Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up) -3- 2009 05 You've Got The Love -5- MILLIONAIRE 2009 54 Drumming Song -4- 2010 02 You've Got The Dirtee Love (feat. September 15, 20233 yr 25 | 21 | 3rd week Burna Boy featuring Dave Cheat On Me 3rd single from I Told Them... Released: 22nd August 2023 Label: Spaceship Records / Bad Habit Chart Statistics NE (07/09/2023) | 19-21-25 Sales: 20k+ Certification: - Status: Standard Chart Ratio 100 Sales 34 Audio Streaming 60 Video Streaming Video qgHV_nv8u3E Biography Nigerian singer Burna Boy opened his Apple Music Up Next spotlight with a distinction: “Music’s supposed to be a universal language. You understanding what I’m saying is second. The primary thing is, what does the person inside you hear?” It’s a simple but radical thought: You can listen on your terms, but he doesn’t have to meet you halfway. Born in 1991 and raised on the southern coast of Nigeria before moving to London for college, Burna (born Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu) has become one of the most prominent African pop artists of the 21st century, fusing his specific background—a Nigerian man entering adulthood in the United Kingdom—with a global vision that encompasses Afrobeats, dancehall, trap, UK hip-hop and just about everything else that might fit under his diasporic umbrella. The result is an artist who isn’t confined by his identity but doesn’t dilute it either. By the time he received broader recognition through a (conspicuously uncredited) feature on Drake’s 2017 mix, More Life, he was already a star in Africa; 2019’s African Giant, which featured collaborators as disparate as Angélique Kidjo, Skrillex, Damian Marley and Future, brought him into international focus. Yeah, he’s just speaking to his people. But there are more of them all the time. - Apple Music Top 100 Chart History Burna Boy 2017 88 Good Time (J Hus feat. Burna Boy) 2019 06 Location (Dave feat. September 15, 20233 yr hmmm... #44 in the mids. thats suspicious. did the us bts streaming farms relocate to the uk this week?! :kink:
September 15, 20233 yr The title of this and relaxed tempo are reminding me of Joji's 'SLOW DANCING IN THE DARK' - sadly not quite as good as that though :P
September 15, 20233 yr Great to see “Angry” make the top 40. I went to a Rolling Stones tribute band on Saturday and they already had it in their set (after 2 days release!) so it seems to have gone down well with their fan base. Has it been a big physical seller?
September 15, 20233 yr (obviously as mods we weren't expecting this so we haven't prepped for this so allow the simple post on behalf of us )
September 15, 20233 yr Hmm quite like the flute on Slow Dancing but otherwise not too keen. And I wonder what shenanigans got it to 24.
