Posted January 27, 20241 yr Welcome to the fifth edition of everyone's favourite song contest, that's not even an exaggeration, is is after all called The Best Song Contest In The World...Ever! Hosted by Yours Truly after miraculously winning the last contest (before I managed a second place as well x) with the classic, This edition's theme is all about pushing boundaries and taking risks, we are looking for Experimental music, this can be any genre - pop, rock, hip hop, electronic, folk, anything - and from any era within the 20th Century as per the forum, but must be distinctly unconventional and not something you'd necessarily hear on the radio. It could have an unusual instrumental, play with form, length and traditional structure, have strange, complicated lyrics or narrative or be a unique combination of genres. You have free reign here from the start of 1960s psychedelia right through to the rise of underground genres in the 80s and 90s so I'm hoping it won't be too difficult, it was experimental music that helped to shape the industry and make it as diverse as it is so I would like to celebrate that. The weirder and off the wall the better, no safe crowd pleasers here please x Some artist ideas to give you an idea who you may want to use as starting points if you're unsure would be Laurie Anderson, Animal Collective, Captain Beefheart, Buckethead, Bjork, Brian Eno, Diamanda Galás, Can, Coil, Butthole Surfers, Aphex Twin and many more x As always, the song must've been released as a single in the 20th Century, or be an album track or demo/bootleg from the same time period. While some minor hits may be allowed, Top 10 singles will be vetoed as will songs with a strong cult following or that may be too well known even if they weren't a hit originally. Please also avoid songs sent to other song contests around the forum. Artists/Songs are first come first served so make sure you get in quick. This is an anonymous contest so please don't reveal what have you sent until you are revealed in the final results. I'm using a Google form for this song contest so please follow the below link: Confirm here You have a week to confirm until 3rd February 23:59, the voting thread should be up the next day. I look forward to seeing what concoctions you come up with B-) Entrants so far: !!! Addy! January 27, 20241 yr Love this theme idea! I'd say my previous entry was quite experimental anyway so hopefully can find one that does a bit better this time :kink:
January 27, 20241 yr I've entered a song I've always had in mind for the main BJSC. It would be considered unusual there but fits in much better here.
January 27, 20241 yr Some artist ideas to give you an idea who you may want to use as starting points if you're unsure would be Laurie Anderson, Animal Collective, Captain Beefheart, Buckethead, Bjork, Brian Eno, Diamanda Galás, Can, Coil, Butthole Surfers, Aphex Twin and many more x In terms of those that got chart hits, Art of Noise and Herbie Hancock from the 80s also should be mentioned! January 27, 20241 yr Ooh yay another one of these, feels like it's been a while (but at the same time wasn't expecting it so soon as I thought I'd read somewhere that these are usually planned to be after Club Bizarre but maybe I'm making that up). Cool theme choice anyway, I do mildly worry it may not inspire massive turnout again but hopefully should be a good bunch of entries from however many people do find something for it. I would have been tempted to send The Residents here if Savan hadn't beaten me to it sending them to BJSC!
January 30, 20241 yr I’ve entered, though it’s another case of not knowing the real impact/awareness of the song’s relevance in 2024. Maybe more people know it than I imagine, but it did not chart.
February 1, 20241 yr Author The ten entries so far look wonderful based on the descriptions, just over two days left for anyone else B-)
February 3, 20241 yr Hopefully, we will still get entries from AH Gold, Dobbo, dandy*, Brer and Jade who have all entered every retro contest up to now. This is the last day to submit a song.
February 3, 20241 yr Ahh this deadline came around so quickly but I will be looking for an entry shortly!
February 3, 20241 yr Found something good pretty quickly which I've sent in - as ever when I leave it this late I am a little worried someone may have had the same idea as me and found the same artist/song so fingers crossed it will be ok!
February 3, 20241 yr Sorry I didn't see this thread at all until Chez's PM reminder (thx!) so haven't had a lot of time to look for an entry. Hope this one I've had on my potentials list for a while will suffice.
February 3, 20241 yr I'm not sure I'm exactly on theme for this so please do let me know Chez if you want me to send something else... I kinda want to send some epic 20 minute jazz track but I can't think of anything that I know of that is that weird.
February 3, 20241 yr Confirmed, sorry for leaving it so late... can only hope this artist hasn't already been taken!
February 3, 20241 yr Miles Davis - Bitches Brew perhaps? (Only 10 mins though) (re: dandy*'s comment) Edited February 3, 20241 yr by jimwatts
February 4, 20241 yr Author 18 entries at the deadline, though one I'm awaiting a replacement for (A Guy Called Gerald - Voodoo Ray, vetoed for being a #12 hit and being very well-known/acclaimed these days). So I'll accept any up until hopefully tomorrow evening when I'll put the voting thread up.
February 4, 20241 yr Seems like a decent turnout for this theme, at least a couple more than the last edition, yay!
