Public Domain? Whoosh! Destiny's Child, a great pop song, and still sounds fab on it's many radio playtimes, 9/10. Paul Van Dyk, another Whoosh! Over my head. Ditto Bomfunk MC's, but Walkin' Away was my fave Craig David song to date, a chart-topper for me, though I'd knock it down to a 9/10 in retrospect. Lovely record.

 

MJ Cole? Blank. Point Break? What About Us indeed. True Party. I hated that Wazzup. Ronan Keating, formulaic yes, but at least it sticks in the brain a bit, 7/10. Truesteppers step off unnoticed by me, and *Nsync was a tad too drippy even for me, a fan of their pop tunes.

 

Destiny;s Child Record OTW for me, just ahead of Craig. Most of them mean nowt to me :o

 

 

The current #1 artist has to take the win here. Spoiler: “Houdini” won’t do so well if I ever reach 2024.

 

9 Eminem Stan 885th #1: an very arresting rap record that started Dido's career and likely provided the sung chorus template for many others

8 Warp Brothers Vs Aquagen Phat Bass 1st hit for this German DJ group based on the same New Order sample as "Operation Blade" that I really find quite thrilling

8 Britney Spears Stronger A really well remembered Britney hit and rightly so: it is the same formula as "Oops…" and "Lucky" but still a powerful song

7 Jay-Z I Just Wanna Love U (Give It 2 Me) Pharrell features on this though is uncredited: I think it's his best for a while; a really gritty, well produced and enjoyable track

7 Madonna Don't Tell Me An interesting country tinged song from her: it has a lovely warmth and rhythm to it and I like the way the atmosphere builds

6 Wyclef Jean Featuring Mary J. Blige 911 An interesting collaboration and a rather unusual stripped back track: it's quite dramatic and emotional though and I do like it

6 Melanie C If That Were Me It's rather a comedown from the 2 awesome chart toppers but a very sweet simply produced charity track about homelessness

6 Mystikal Shake Ya Ass A 2nd uncredited Pharrell feature here and the debut hit for this US rapper: it's raucous but a high octane and catchy track

5 Mystikal Charlie's Angels 2000 The last Top 40 for this electronic group and an instrumental for the film: it certainly sounds like film music but it's enjoyable

5 Bob The Builder Can We Fix It? 886th #1 and the year's biggest seller: not a musical great but a really cleverly composed, catchy and joyous children's theme

4 S Club 7 Never Had A Dream Come True 884th #1: the "Children In Need" song that outdid the total sales of "Reach" in a few weeks; a well crafted but unexciting ballad

4 Lost Witness 7 Colours 3rd hit for Lost Witness which is UK DJ Simon Paul: it's quite a pleasant female vocal led dance track but nothing very exciting

3 Junior Jack My Feeling Debut hit for this Italian DJ using the 80s soul song "Saturday Love" by Cherrelle & Alexander O'Neal: doesn't do much for me

3 Sisqo Incomplete His 4th hit and to me he always sounds a bit whiny: "Thong Song" was such great material that it didn't matter; this not so much

2 Bon Jovi Thank You For Loving Me This only narrowly escapes a 1 as the others are dire but it's a clichéd and saccharine ballad not saved by the presence of guitars

1 Da Muttz Wassuup This is the catchphrase shouted over "U Can't Touch This": the True Party version had at least some creativity but this is awful

1 Daniel O'Donnell Morning Has Broken The 3rd time that this hymn from the 30s has charted after Cat Stevens and Neil Diamond's versions: definitely not needed

Yep trance was still popular but from it there seems to have been a short lived 'hard house' trend of the end of 2000 with Public Domain and Warp Brothers and then Norman Bass in early 2001 (and probably more low peaking top 40 hits between that which I don't know)

 

'Eat Sleep Rave Repeat' by Calvin/Fatboy Slim near the end of 2013 brought back that sort of sound a bit.

Both 'Can We Fix It?' and 'Never Had A Dream Come True' stand out as nostalgic there! As a 3-year-old at the time, I definitely watched Bob The Builder and my parents bought the single (and an album :lol:) for me and my brother. The song really reminds me of school discos and rebellious kids replying "no we can't" to "can we fix it?" then, with the S Club song, we sang it for my Year 6 leavers' assembly (Same Difference had recently done it on X Factor) and I had a solo *_* how impressive that it managed to go top 10 in the U.S. as well as becoming another chart-topper for the group here.

 

I was really unsure about 'Don't Tell Me' when I first heard it, as the off-kilter production was a bit overwhelming to my ears, but I've grown to love it after getting used to it over time. It's a unique moment in her singles discography for sure with the country-meets-electronica sound. Mirwais was a brilliant production partner for her, as well as William Orbit sticking around on the Music album too, one of my favourite records of hers.

 

I agree that 'Stronger' was a great Britney single! Very punchy, empowering and I love the callback to her debut with the "my loneliness ain't killing me no more" line. The video really sticks in my mind too with the impressive chairography on display *.*

 

'Stan' is my favourite of this batch too :wub: my top Eminem single let alone #1 hit. The storytelling is still tense for me no matter how many times I've listened to it and the dark Dido sample works so well. What an impact it's had with the term "stan" sticking around in popular culture even now.

Stan is a 9/10 for me a genuine classic (and I rate the new Eminem track too! TBC in my next charts :) ) Got me into Dido, and I had never heard th term "stan" till I joined Buzzjack around 2012 and someone asked me if I stanned the Pet Shop Boys. I had to google that :lol: The only Warp I know is Warp 9 in Star Trek, which is pretty fast.

 

Stronger went top 3 for me, and another 9/10 from Britney in her pop heyday. I don;t remember that Jay-Z single at all, but I liked it enough for a 7/10 - presumably the Pharrell influence as I always liked Mr. W, but I didnt give him a credit. Madonna - bought the album in Florida, loved Don't Tell Me the highlight of the album. 10/10.

 

911 was a goodie collab, 8/10, Mary J always fab, then and now, acting or singing. Mel C's was a a fairly average track by her then-standards, but still a 7/10. Mystikal's ass-shaking moved me not, Charlie's Angels 2000 I have down as Apollo 440 though, Mystikal the typo gets no credit from me! 6/10. Bob The Builder, oh how can anyone not at least quite like it. I was 42 and gave it a 4/10, and I may have been a bit meanie about it as it's the tune everyone can sing along to more than any other in this strong batch.

 

I never entirely got the S Club ballad at the time, not even if Cathy Dennis had a hand in it! But it's a decent 7/10, and well done Jade on the solo! I have never sung in public, which (trust me) the world is very grateful for. "I sing all the right notes - but not necessarily in the right order" © Eric Morecambe 1972-ish. So jealous of people who can sing....

 

Incomplete was another Florida radio track and an 8/10 (holiday songs always tend to over-rate in my charts a bit when I'm denied access to UK chart music). The rest all meant not a jot to me.....

Stan and Don’t Tell Me are both 10s tbh. Phat Bass was something I liked at the time and you’re underrating Bob the Builder! It’s a solid 7/10 and one of the best novelty records - 3rd or 4th best of the week for me

A relatively weak group to end the year which may be a regular feature this century with all the seasonal charity, novelty and reality hits. You can generally rely on a #4 peaking hit by Robbie to be excellent and indeed this is one delivers.

 

8 Robbie Williams Supreme A great song with a well judged "I Will Survive" sample; a welcome surprise after the gimmicky "Rock DJ" and the brash "Kids"

7 Green Day Warning This introduces the tremelo guitar effect that will feature on "Boulevard…": a more subtle track than the gung ho "Minority"

7 Kylie Minogue Please Stay Concluding a hatrick of strong comeback singles for her, this has a strong tune and a lovely Latin style shimmering guitar part

6 Sugababes New Year A seasonal 2nd hit for them: a gentle ballad that doesn't stand out like "Overload" but it's very heartfelt with lovely harmonies

6 Billie Piper Walk Of Life After 7 Top 5s this bombed and was her final hit: a shame as it has a freshness and different style about it that I rather like

5 Storm {DE} Storm Animal This doesn't have the anthemic melody of "Time To Burn" and lacks something to really make it pop but it's an enjoyable track

5 Oxide And Neutrino Featuring Megaman No Good 4 Me A garage interpolation of the Prodigy track with Lisa Maffia singing the chorus: nothing outstanding but an interesting version

4 Westlife What Makes A Man Their 1st #1 miss created with the usual formula, although I think it has slightly more soul and oomph to it than some of theirs

3 Wombles With Roy Wood I Wish It Could Be A Wombling Merry Christmas Everyday Both the original tracks used for this mashup are classics, but it's put together very crudely and doesn't even work rhythmically

2 Whitney Houston Featuring Faith Evans And Kelly Price Heartbreak Hotel An oddly delayed appearance for a 1999 track: received well in the US but I find it a dirge with a very unconvincing melody

2 Lionel Richie Don't Stop The Music It's very Lionel this and not in a good way: a very inconsequential piece of disco pop that might as well be from 20 years prior

1 Keith 'N' Shane Girl You Know It's True Only hit for this Boyzone duo with a bizarre and messy cover where they seem to present themselves as gangster rappers

1 Craig At This Time Of Year The "Big Brother" winner with a terribly weakly sung drippy single, even though other housemates had more musical ability

 

Yep 'Supreme' is one of Robbie's best.

 

'No Good 4 Me' I prefer to 'Bound 4 Da Reload'. It is a good bassline garage track. But the Prodigy's use of the 'No Good For Me' sample was better.

Robbie's Supreme is a chart-topping 10/10 for me. Great use of Gloria's classic. Robbie could do no wrong at this stage, bought all the regular albums and rated them all, plenty of great album tracks as well as the singles. Green Day are always a bit hit and miss for me, and Warning was a miss. Kylie, on t'other hand always a hit - and Please Stay was a solid 9 but the album had at least another 2 singles on it: Your Disco Needs You (like Loveboat and Kids co-written with Robbie Williams & Guy Chambers) and Light Years all of those 9/10's. Light Years was a brilliant album, a fabulous tour, but Kylie debuted a new track on the tour which she was quite excited about. Something Cathy Dennis & Rob Davies of Mud had written....

 

Sugababes, New Year an OK 6/10 for me, I don't remember it much, Billie's Walk Of Life an 8/10 but not the Dire Straits song. "woo-hoo". Oxide & Neutrino were always consistent. Ly bad. What Makes A Man? A complete chart miss from me, say 2/10. The Wombles and Wizzard mash-up was a bit mad, but it gave more chart points to both then-fave christmas songs. Wombles doesnt get much play these days, so it's still quite fresh fun.

 

Lionel, no please do stop the music, generic blandness was par for the course by 2000. Keith n Shane I bizarrely liked their cover, 6/10. Yes, At This Time Of Year was a bit drippy, but on the plus side Craig was super-hot, fit, good-looking, engaging, funny and he enjoyed getting his kit off at every opportunity on Big Brother. Something they frowned on in later pre-watershed big-ratings series. The first series was just exhibitionists having a rule-breaking laugh with accidental careers coming out of it, later series were formulaic media-controlled constructions and people trying to get famous. Ironically given the Big Brother name. 4/10 for the christmas tune though.

Louise - Beautiful Inside – this was good. Should've gotten top 10 for her.

A very strong start to the year here: everything down to Everlast I would happily listen to through choice. The Dusted track was quite the discovery but comes behind the stunning Top 2. The Chili are getting a rare hatrick of 9s. And I’ve said I’m only going to give 3 10s per year so it seems rash to blow one straight away but “Touch Me” really is the perfect dance track for me. It has everything including excitement, passion, beautiful vocals, an excellent build in the production and interesting lyrics.

 

10 Rui Da Silva Featuring Cassandra Touch Me 887th #1: an incredibly sensual dance track with an infectious baseline that builds in the most stunning and exhilarating way

9 Red Hot Chili Peppers Road Trippin' Such a fine album that this was only the 5th single but brilliant again from them: an incredibly atmospheric captivating track

8 Dusted Always Remember To Respect And Honour Your Mother This was mainly a Rollo from Faithless project: a unique and captivating gentle electronic track with a choirboy style chorus

8 Feeder Buck Rogers Highest peaking hit for this long running Welsh indie band and rightly a classic as no other rock song sounds quite like this

8 Saint Etienne Boy Is Crying This London electronic group never fails to deliver and this is a delightfully eclectic and quite minimalist yet addictive track

7 Santos Camels Only hit for this Italian DJ: a great track and I love the slightly distorted sound to the violins which evokes a desert landscape

7 Mauro Picotto Komodo (Save A Soul) He's had "Lizard" and "Iguana" and now this, sampling "Sweet Lullaby" by Deep Forest: it's a very lovely soothing trance track

7 Creed With Arms Wide Open A US #1 and the 1st of a couple of Top 40s for this grunge band: a lovely tender rock ballad with the most beautiful lyrics

6 Mis-Teeq Why Debut hit for this UK garage group who are clearly a cut above other girl bands: it's an infectious, rhythmic and pacey track

6 Texas Inner Smile Their 2nd best of album hit: objectively an excellently crafted pop song but I've never fully got on with the "yeah yeah…" riff

6 Fragma Featuring Maria Rubia Everytime You Need Me Following up "Toca's Miracle" was never going to be easy and this doesn't have that magic but is a sweet and enjoyable song

5 David Morales Presents The Face Featuring Juliet Roberts Needin' U II A reworking of a largely instrumental house anthem into a fully sung track: it's good but slightly frenetic; prefer the original

5 Everlast Black Jesus 2nd and last solo Top 40 for the House Of Pain frontman: it's an enjoyable and funky if slightly repetitive blues rock song

4 Jennifer Lopez Love Don't Cost A Thing 888th #1: clearly this did the business for her but I'm not keen on its brash style; the production is good and like the bassline

4 Lene Marlin Where I'm Headed Her last hit and another pleasant mid tempo number with a gentle tuneful chorus, but not enough to maintain interest in her

3 Steps It's The Way You Make Me Feel/Too Busy Thinking About My Baby The 1st side is apparently a fan favourite but just an improved "Stomp" for me, and is coupled with a strange 60s soul cover

3 Fatboy Slim Featuring Macy Gray Demons This ought to have been an intriguing collaboration and there's an uplifting quality to it but I find it quite samey and dragging
