Children is fantastic!

Stereotypes feels like a forgotten top 10 for about but they were in their prime when everything was gonna hit the top tier!

Robert Miles' song 'Children' defintiely changed much of the course of chart dance music for the rest of the 90s.

Omg just spotted this peaked #11 that week. Perhaps my favourite ever #11 hit.

For me the real spiritual follow up to 'Set You Free'

'Children' loved it then and now - so much emotion without words, and an early outing of trance into the mainstream. 'Hyperballad' is my favourite of the Björk songs I know.
Oasis performing two songs on the same show, I think it was The Jam who were the last ones to do so.

Thank goodness Babylon Zoo blocked that bland 3T song from the top, really small gap there.

Love the Björk, Luniz and Robert Miles additions  the second TOTP episode today was great, obviously including the 'I Wanna Be A Hippy' opener. xo

just realised that a few weeks ago Alanis got her 3rd top 40 hit,

You Learn made it to #24

but just like the first two, peaking just in the top 30

You Oughta Know #22

Hand in my Pocket #26

You Learn #24

always found it bizarre how slow was the UK in warming up to Alanis

Yeah shame Children didn’t make #1 but it’s almost more iconic as an all time classic #2.

2ND MARCH

oasismtv-768x396.jpg

They took home 2 BRITS on Monday and on Sunday they scored their second No 1 single! Yes it’s been a great week for Oasis. The band are currently charting with 5 singles between 41-75 whilst their last single “Wonderwall” grabbed the BRIT for best single and rebounds 32-30 as it crosses the 900,000 mark, in addition to that the album “Definitely Maybe” pushes 16-9 and “(What’s The Story) Morning Glory” returns to the No 1. Fourth cut “Don’t Look Back In Anger” wastes no time in rushing past all opposition on a sale of 250,000 in its first week, by far their biggest opening sale and indeed each of their singles last 5 singles has opened with sales north of 120,000- how long can that go on?

The song allegedly borrows lines from a tape which was burgled from John Lennon’s apartment after his death where the late Beatle had started to record his memoirs and which Noel Gallagher bought a copy whilst in the US. Certainly the single has drawn comparisons to Lennon’s “Imagine” fuelling further plagiarism allegations against Oasis but for now it doesn’t seem to matter to fans as the hits continue. This is also the first Oasis single to feature lead vocals by Noel fact fans and look out for actor Patrick McNee in the promo!

Robert Miles sees his sales expand 56% to 84,000 but he can only climb 3-2 and must fancy his chances at getting a No 1 seem very slim, 3T are down 2-3 (59,000) whilst last week’s No 1 from Babylon Zoo collapses 1-4 (51,000) and was never in with a chance of a 6th week at the top.

Terrorvision are another band whose profile has slowly been getting bigger over the last few years, they’ve had 6 top 40 single without ever making the top 20 (“Oblivion” was their biggest hit at No 21) but they get a big breakthrough with the first release from their third album entitled “Perseverance”. The single enters at No 5 (48,000) and if you like the sound then you only have 3 weeks to wait for the album “Regular Urban Survivors”.

Further down at No 9 (26,000) is a new entry for US DJ Edward Greene under the name of Gusto. His single “Disco’s Revenge” samples Harvey Mason’s “Groovin You” and illustrates the continued way that the clubs can generate top 10 singles whilst mainstream radio ignores them. The title, incidentally, is from a quote by Frankie Knuckles stating that house music is “Disco’s revenge”.

Celine’s back- she’s finished her English follow up album to “The Colour Of My Love” and it’s called “Falling Into You” and the single of the same name is the first release. Co-penned by Billy Steinberg and Rick Nowels it was originally recorded by Belinda Carlisle for her forthcoming album but she ended up rejecting the song and so it lands in Dion’s lap. Expect the album to shift in buckets when it’s released in 3 weeks but in the interim the single debuts at No 10 (25,000) to rank as her 6th top 10 single.

Inexplicably Technohead bound 10-6 (33,000) overtaking the falling Luniz 4-7 (32,000) and Lighthouse Family 5-8 (29,000).

This week sees the release of the final Take That single- surely Oasis can’t deny the perfect pop goodbye?

1- DON’T LOOK BACK IN ANGER- Oasis (250,000)

2- CHILDREN- Robert Miles (84,000)

3- ANYTHING- 3T (59,000)

4- SPACEMAN- Babylon Zoo (51,000)

5- PERSEVERANCE- Terrorvision (48,000)

6- I WANT TO BE A HIPPY- Technohead (33,000)

7- I GOT 5 ON IT- Luniz (32,000)

8- LIFTED- Lighthouse Family (29,000)

9- DISCO’S REVENGE- Gusto (26,000)

10- FALLING INTO YOU- Celine Dion (25,000)

9TH MARCH

It was a bad Valentine’s day for the teenage girl market, the biggest boyband of the decade announced they were splitting after months of speculation, almost immediately thoughts turned to the final single which this week becomes their 8th chart topper. “How Deep Is Your Love” is of course a cover of the Bee Gees Classic from 1977 (No 3) and in topping the charts it also becomes the Gibb’s 8th No 1 in the songwriting stakes, it led from the off and was never in doubt that it would end up at the top after selling 257,000 copies in its first week. The group’s greatest hits collection will be out at the end of the month but it means that the quartet’s collection of chart toppers leaves them in 5th place on the all time list with only The Beatles, Elvis Presley, Cliff Richard and Abba ahead of them, and as they retire they can reflect on total UK single sales of over 4 million, far and away the biggest tally of the 90s so far. Expect speculation now to turn to their solo careers…..

Touted by some as the battle of the boybands Boyzone’s 5th single “Coming Home Now” arrives at No 4 (72,000). In reality of course there was no competition, it’s another release from their debut album “Said And Done” which has already done 600,000 copies and is in the top 20 this week. It keeps their string of top 5 singles intact, and though they are yet to hit No 1, they must be fancied to become the natural heirs to Take That’s crown.

supergrass1999PA130410-1.jpg

A bit of a bumper week for big acts as Supergrass also return at No 5 (43,000) with “Going Out”. It appears to be a standalone single with the band not scheduled to be in the studio until late in the year to record a follow up to “I Should Coco”.

The clubs yield up another hit, back in 1992 Gat Décor’s “Passion” made No 29 and has turned into a dance classic over the years, it was remixed and mashed up with Degrees of Motion’s “Do You Want It Right Now” (No 26, 1994) a few years ago and again became a much sought after bootleg. It now gets an official release under the moniker Gat Décor (an anagram, almost, of Tag Records) and comes in at No 6 (36,000).

Eternal continue to prove they are the biggest girlgroup in the land with a 7th top 10 single, “Good Thing” is new at No 8 (28,000) and is a third single lifted from the “Power Of A Woman” album. They will go head to head with the new Louise single this week though all parties maintain they are still friends.

Last May Oasis knocked Take That off the top and now the latter get revenge with Oasis bounced 1-2 (115,000) though they are top of the album charts for a 9th week with “(What’s The Story) Morning Glory”. It’s also worth mentioning that Oasis also score a US top 10 single this week as “Wonderwall” climbs to No 8. That’s all the harder on Robert Miles who increases again to 89,000 but drops 2-3, firmly on their way out however are 3T who drop 3-7 (33,000), Technohead who are off 6-9 (24,000) and Luniz who slide 7-10 (22,000).

Next week we have a "new" Beatles single- after all the hype of the last single can this one do it?

1- HOW DEEP IS YOUR LOVE- Take That (257,000)

2- DON’T LOOK BACK IN ANGER- Oasis (115,000)

3- CHILDREN- Robert Miles (89,000)

4- COMING HOME NOW- Boyzone (72,000)

5- GOING OUT- Supergrass (43,000)

6- PASSION- Gat Decor (36,000)

7- ANYTHING- 3T (33,000)

8- GOOD THING- Eternal (28,000)

9- I WANNA BE A HIPPY- Technohead (24,000)

10- I GOT 5 ON IT- Luniz (22,000)

Ah ‘Don’t Look Back In Anger’ what a song, peak 1990s, peak Oasis and what a stellar sale 250,000 despite the album selling buckloads!

Did mainstream radio not support songs like Gusto? Not even R1?

Gat Decor - Passion is good, described as progressive house but I reckon its more like deep house to my ears. Very influential instrumental from 1992.

In terms of the vocal it goes quite well with the music but I much prefer Armand Van Helden's version of I Want Your Soul.

Gusto - Disco's Revenge is good but is a bit boring and flat to me becuase I am used to the Freemasons 2008 remix.

I prefer BT to 3T this was a fab #14 hit from February 1996:

oh wow 2 weeks with the #1 single selling 250,000 copies, that's insane, and the Oasis song had been available on their album for months

Don't Look Back in Anger is their best song, much better than Wonderwall

on the other hand, TT's cover of the Bee Gees is so sappy and lacklustre, one of their worst singles ever

The Boyzone song wasn't any better, at least it was an original but for me that was their worst single.

Didn't realise before last night that Sonique did the vocal on the original Disco's Revenge as I've never watched the video before.
