I know it is unlikely to happen but I would love for Good Luck Babe to make #1 at some point, it's such a strong pop single
Why are there fewer UK artists getting big hits compared to even a few years ago?

Why are there fewer UK artists getting big hits compared to even a few years ago?

Think a lot of global charts have lost even more of their local flair this year and are starting to blend together. Continued by-product of TikTok's algorithm wrestling hold as a discovery platform. There have been 3 Australian songs that made the top 50 this year (soon to be 4) here and 2 of them are covers. In New Zealand, the biggest local hit right now is a top 10 hit from 9 months ago that's barely holding top 100 on the Spotify chart at the moment. This monster hit of the past 4 years spent over 200 weeks in the top 50 and just 4 months later is going to leave the top 200.

I don't know if anyone's been paying attention to this sort of thing, but I've noticed that a lot of the random stuff that tended to be big UK hits that just didn't make it to the US or Australia tends to find a hard ceiling around the #20ish spot on the UK Chart lately (and that's with ACR helping it out). In terms of local artists, the UK probably has enough international clout to hold their own for quite some time, but they might end up with the same issue Aus/NZ has where it's just so difficult to break new artists without them going global at the same time.

It's a language thing, and like Dircadirca said, US content is dominant in TikTok making it for non-US but English-language songs very hard to break through.

In Finland the charts are hyper local because only Finnish acts make songs in local language (if only they were better...)

I think UK acts should focus on personality - what makes UK essentially UK and not America.

Because the British music business has no idea what the public really wants. They sign artists that appeal to music journalists but the public just want good songs.

I think it's cos now it's Tiktok what makes hits, which is something global

up to recently it was Hot Hits and other playlists what was making hits but that has stopped now

last time HH made a hit was Alibi

HH could push UK songs and make UK hits, now they simply can't, so it's all up to Tiktok and what goes viral

and that has turned global, you look at the UK charts or the Australian charts and the top songs are the same, identical

What You Know reaching a new peak - funny its never gone top 40 officially given its continued massive streaming presence.

Yay keep going 'Pink Pony Club' :cheer:

I was also surprised to learn that 'Drive By' was a new entry! I guess its original release pre-dated the streaming era by a couple of years, but 'Hey, Soul Sister' is usually hanging around, so thought it might've also popped in at some point. Well, there we go.

Has Tinasha peaked already? :(
Certainly looks like it. Really frustrating that it has a peak of #101 (or #102 icr exactly) on Spotify! :(

I reckon there's a solid chance that it actually did appear on the Spotify chart back in 2012 when there was just a weekly top 100. I forget exactly when this started, but I was recording the Australian one back from September 2012 and "Drive By" (which wasn't *quite* as big a hit in Aus) was still charting until November.

The first time I ever used Spotify was in 2010 and they definitely had a UK chart back then (I can't remember if it was daily or weekly). It wasn't wildly different to the official charts except for hip hop and indie/alternative songs being higher at the time. So I think all big hits since then would have charted tbh.

They used to have album charts back then as well.
