In case anyone cares xx

I really don't know what to do now these shitehawks have been put in opposition but they'll still be... around I guess so better discuss them

Ā

The 6 candidates have been declared and nominations have closed - Suella didn't make it on to the ballot paper:

Ā

Kemi Badenoch

James Cleverly

Robert Jenrick

Priti Patel

Mel Stride

Tom Tugendhat

Ā

Can any of these manage to keep the Tory party alive or manage to regrow it? Long old leadership contest, results on 2 November, at which point any decent politics nerds will be entirely focused on the USA I suspect.

I mean, they’re all terrible so I wouldn’t know how to vote. I’m not even sure it matters after today given it should now be decades before they’re let in again.
It's absolutely going to come down to Kemi vs. Priti. Both are hideous but Kemi will definitely be the most dangerous and that's what'll win it for her.

My preferred choice is Cleverly.

Ā

Tugendhat is possibly definitionally the least awful (or Stride, don't know much about him but he was a W&P sec so probably not great) but I see a route for Tugendhat where he restores the Conservative party's 'respectability', whatever that means it does mean something to the electorate, and puts them in with a shot of regaining 200+ seats in 2029, which is something we do not want to happen as it means more Tory governments in the future at some point. Or even winning, the electorate we know is now very transient and fickle.

Ā

Badenoch and Patel I do not think could win an election, but they would definitely poison opposition rhetoric and polarise it so they would be awful - might have to hope the racism + sexism of Tory members keeps them from winning there? Jenrick much the same to be quite honest except for that last bit, hope he doesn't start gaining traction, though I don't think he will.

Ā

Which leaves Cleverly who I think is both inept enough to not help the Tories recover and inoffensive enough that he won't (majorly) take us back towards Tories showing up in headlines with culture wars. Best way to make the Tories eventually fade quietly away and die as their voter base passes into oblivion.

Kind of hoping Kemi gets it to steer the conservatives even more right/far right so the likes of reform can continue splitting their vote and to put off many would be centre-right conservative voters. It would cement the conservatives current historically low seats in future elections with the prospect of being overtaken by Lib Dems and Reform even...

Ā

Not sure that would happen. I feel Badenoch and Patel are the two that would totally sell out to Reform, which would improve their electorate chances. Think the only way the Tories win the election is if they sell out to Reform..

Ā

I'd say Tugendhat is the only one who could pull a 'Starmer' although I don't know how he would fight off Reform.

I'm sure it'll end up being Kemi

Ā

I imagine it'll be between Cleverly, Badenoch and Jenrick though - can't see the other 3 winning

Stride as he can use the Matthew Wilder song in his campaign!

I said before I think it’ll be Jenrick. He seems more sensible to me as a speaker. Kemi is very overrated. Patel is way too divisive. Cleverly has been exposed as a lightweight and I don’t really know who the other two are.
I don't think I've ever heard of Mel Stride

Ā

James Cleverly is, ironically, thick as two short planks stuck together with stupid glue.

Ā

They don’t call him Jimmy Dimly for no reason.

Jenrick gave the former owner of the Express titles Richard Desmond planning permission for a major development just before he would have had to pay a substantial charge. Soon afterwards, Desmond made a hefty donation to the Tories. The fact that the decision was later overturned doesn’t make Jenrick any less corrupt.

Tugenhadt is certainly the least awful (maybe cos he's avoided scandals unlike the others) so if guess that'd be my pick (after null-vote x)

Ā

It will be Badenoch though as she gets the media headlines and flames the culture wars, yay x Braverman would've been the absolute worst case though small mercies.

Ā

I know your Welsh but they will be back within 1-3 electoral cycles as the English still voted 120 of them in! Any real political country with principles they would have been wiped out completely in an extinction event but not in England.

Jenrick is the most right wing is he not?

Ā

Why has Bedenoch been thrown up as future leader, she seems pretty terrible when speaking??

She’s popular with the members, bit like Truss, who was also a terrible speaker.

Can we have an option for none of them?!

Ā

Not sure what my nationality had to do with the Tory leadership race tbh.

Ā

I know my history but given how previous conservative governments were nowhere near as openly crooked as the last bunch were, I’m allowed to have hope that people would remember this going forward.
