Agreed that 30 is the worst, it's sanitised and devoid of personality, just a boring production and nothing new or imaginative to it at all. I'm not surprised it dived in sales after the first week.

I didn't like the Dizzee rap in 20 but overall it was a competent effort to bring it up to date to the era, with the slight indie-tinged production almost making it sound like a Travis or Keane production, with the latter's slower 'feed the world' in a slightly different melody to the ensemble chorus making for a nice switch up in the song. It was a nice touch to have Bono do his line again in a more restrained fashion, and there were also some good harmonies from Will Young/Jamelia, Sugababes and others. I used to listen to it quite a bit when it came out and I did buy the CD single at the time.

Band Aid II I really just admire the naffness, it's a product of the time like 20 but in a different way with that already quite tired soudning SAW production and such a bizarre ensemble - Kylie, Jason, Sonia and the SAW acts who had more fleeting success, but then also Chris Rea, Cliff, Wet Wet Wet, Lisa Stansfield - the voices just didn't complement each other at all, but it kind of made it entertaining for me. And I will take being entertained in some way any day over being bored, as I was with 30.

I have a big soft spot for 20. But that might just be more because it was "my era" and I have nostalgic attachments to it etc.. I enjoy the original a lot, but it's not my go to (controversial opinion I assume)

Band Aid II and 30 are absolutely DIRE though and I don't think I will ever go to them.

oh my that's so true about Ellie Goulding on 30, she sounds like on helium, even I jumped half scared after her line :D

Band Aid II is utterly horrendous and I'm totally on board with them ignoring it. The other 3 versions are at least kind of compatible in sound so I can understand why they're using those together.

I'm intrigued by the mention of Underworld on this version - their work on the music for the 2012 Olympics showed they can do production extremely well when they put their mind to it

Underworld were part of Band Aid 30, but no more than having vocals in the group chorus I believe? That’s what Wiki suggests anyway.

Exactly this- it's not really a case of musical merit or otherwise (lord knows, the original apart, there's little going on in terms of breaking new ground on subsequent versions- and let's not when it comes to Dizzee's rap)- but if it was good enough for Geldof to approach SAW to produce it and to take the subsequent monies that it raised then it should be present in some form.

The original is a brilliant Xmas song and sounds well today.

The 89 version was awful imo, the artists may have given their effort but with SAW producing it it sounded like every other song they produced post 1988 that cheesy tinny constant beat which was very tired by Dec 89 so much so that by Dec 90 it was nearly gone from the charts after being a constant since 1984. It also sounds dated these days.

The 04 version I like maybe because it’s my era but also the Dizzee part was good to show some representation from rap and black artists in the song which was very much missing from the previous two versions.

I only enjoy a very small handful of SAW productions so unsurprisingly Band Aid II is my least favourite iteration too :P

I can't help feeling it would have done anyway. Public opinion on the whole thing seemed to have shifted somewhat.

They didn't bother with a video this time?

Cant find it on Spotify...

Wow, this is all over the place. Ha at the Dizzee rap not only being kept in but sounding even more out of place than in the 2004 version, and just shoehorned in. And then it ends all of a sudden shortly after that. The flow and structure is bizarre and makes no sense.

I'll stick to the original as always...

It’s a bit of mess to be honest. Although the production is what should have been used for Band Aid 30.

That was my first thought too. It seems chopped up in places.
