Surprised E17 are not doing better this year with Stay Another Day - it’s had the 30th anniversary treatment, 2 x 7” vinyl releases, remastered for 2024, website exclusive download bundle and a ton of TV/Radio promo from Tony.

Very sad. I trully didin'ty expect that that's why i cancelled my order. Brian was also very furious about the re-release. The first vinyl release is always the BEST (i guess) and i have it.

Stay Another Day barely does anything on streaming, without streams Christmas classics get nowhere on the chart. Do East 17 even have that many fans who would be interested in a reissue campaign?
It’s hardly a declaration for it being one of the best Christmas tracks but clearly it’s popular and that will be due to media, airplay factors etc which have a heavy influence on the chart positions!

You could say this about literally any song, so that's kinda pointless and moot 🤷‍♂️

The start? I mean, there was Jess Glynne and Sam Rider very much in the same boat before this.

Yeah, and no need to be a star to get that Alexa hit, just willing to do the exclusive.

Just looking at Mondays update East 17 is the highest of what I would consider christmasy ballads, kind of reiterated what I'm thinking and that people don't stream Christmas ballads as much,

Nat King Cole’s The Christmas Song is a bit higher at #47, but yeah there’s not too many!

Went top 40 in 2018 and 2019 though. I guess it's slipped down the playlists?

The song extends outside any remaining fanbase they have - the webstore exclusive vinyl sold out weeks ago so there is some interest (The rush released Amazon Exclusive is still available)

but why is the new live album by The Cure being combined with the studio album?

thought live albums counted separately

Remix and Live Albums

Transactions of remix or live albums will not be combined with sales of the original studio version.

Didn't the Rolling Stones do this last year and they got Christmas number one because of it? Must be a case by case thing
Are songs like ‘Snowman’ by Sia and ‘White Christmas’ by Bing not ballads?

There is a combined version with the live tracks added to the main album (at least on streaming services), so guessing that will be why.

Should A Nonsense Christmas not technically be classified as a remix of Nonsense and thus inherit its chart run?

Adding to this, it looks like they are combined on Billboard, Nonsense is at #42 on the global 200 this week with a big climb and the Christmas version isn't in the charts at all, so I can only assume that they're combined.

I think you’re missing the point I was making that chart positions alone do not necessarily mean a song is a great track but let’s just agree to disagree!

I feel like this is an interesting question, it's such an edge case. I've been thinking about it for a bit, and the comparison I come back to is Taylor's versions. They're slight tweaks on the same song but the melody is fully re-recorded, and they don't inherit the OG song's chart run. A Nonsense Christmas is lyrically quite a large tweak but I assume they just use the same melody recording with some bells in there. So my question is: is a nonsense christmas more or less similar to nonsense than Taylor's versions are to the OG?

Is Fairytale of New York not a ballad?

It starts of as a ballad but gets really upbeat so I don't count it as a ballads personally

Obviously the vast majotity for 40 yrs now disagrees with you

I used to love Last Christmas when i was younger. I now think having a 40 year old song reaching the top spot every Christmas is a bit too much. It is now time for other songs to shine.

I compared the lyrics to nosense and nosense Christmas and these are the only lyrics that are the same "Baby, my tongue goes numb" and "I'm talkin', I'm talkin', nah-nah-nah (I'm talkin')

Blah-blah-blah-blah" . I don't think I saw any other lyrics that was the same unless I missed it.
