I think any act that had multiple chart toppers would have a few that only got to number 1 because of who they were, rather than the song itself, Westlife being a good example. If I could pick a group I actually like, I would say Heart by the Pet Shop Boys which could be described as ordinary compared to many of their other singles.

Heathen! I love Heart.

Oh and I Feel You by Peter Andre. I honestly couldn’t even sing the chorus.

that Lemonade song by a bunch of B-list American rappers that lucked its way to #1 with low sales/ACR is a strong contender in recent times such a pedestrian rap song that somehow was a lot bigger th

Katy Perry’s “Part Of Me” is the ultimate just had a huge era so the lead from the next album was going to go to #1 no matter what it was, and it turned out to be a non event of a song.

“Dirtee Disco” by Dizzee Rascal is sort of similar - just very forgettable but he was so huge at the time.

Lost Frequencies - Are You With Me

[begs to differ] - aside from being a blissful dance tune, it has the distinction of being the only #1 to stay there for just 5 days, as the chart was moved from Sunday to Friday that week!

Part of Me gaga

I'd have to say something like Please Don't Let Me Go by Olly Murs for this, a waste of three and a half minutes

Some of the McFly's ones must be worth a mention, particularly something like 'Please Please' or 'I'll Be OK'

I was waiting for someone to mention them, but as Buzzjack's resident McFly stan I'm afraid I can't accept that any of their number ones were ordinary! (OK maybe 'Please Please' was a tiny bit less amazing than their other number ones)

Sam Bailey's cover of Skyscraper came to mind. Some of the X Factor covers have merit to me but that one always felt like a vastly inferior version of one of Demi's best songs, performed without anywhere near as much emotion.

Also the last couple of X Factor finalist singles (I found the first couple quite nice but it went downhill quickly and the quality wasn't there, it was just the hype of the show, and the fact Wishing on a Star tacked on JLS and One Direction... tearsmile)

I honestly had no recollection of this being a #1 despite loving the song. She really was in her imperial phase.

Literally all of the songs released around it (Teenage Dream, Firework, E.T. - even Wide Awake is probably more remembered nowadays) were much bigger culturally but Part Of Me was the one that sneaked the #1. One of those chart quirks all down to fortunate timing.

I mean, '5 Colours', 'Obviously', 'All About You' and 'Star Girl' each have their place. Those really don't!

thank u, next & break up with your girlfriend, i'm bored

No offense, but those are the first things coming to my mind.

Would have to pick one by an artist who isn't very remarkable e.g not a huge name and the song itself doesn't have any kind of gimmick/cultural impact. Going back to the 80s I would say "I've Never Been To Me" by Charlene would be one of those, never heard of it before I got interested in the charts

I think this is where this survey starts to become subjective. Maybe it's an age thing but I'd imagine most anyone born before 1980 would instantly recognise this song for better or for worse. It may have generated Marmite type opinions at the time but it definitely wouldn't be classified as ordinary or non descript in my opinion. It famously featured on film cult classic Priscilla, Queen of the Desert too and has been parodied and lampooned in sketches and comedy shows over the years and it's the type of tune that a drunken group would mockingly burst into song if it came on the airwaves back in the day! It was that type of song! 😃 An "ordinary" or forgettable song would never get that much positive or negative attention.

@awardinary I wonder if we should take all the songs mentioned in this thread and create a poll to find out what Buzzjack regards as the most ordinary of all of them? Though maybe give it another couple of days for more suggestions

Completely fair, I'm from way after this song's time but my parents were born in the 70s and couldn't recognise the song and they've not really heard it on the radio (my mother always has Heart 70s or 80s on in the car), it's not been certified since digital sales were tracked either so had just assumed it was a song people didn't really think about after it was popular thus leading me to suggest it. All down to perspective in the end I guess!

I never really imagined this thread would be much of a talking point when I started it, plus it was always going to be subjective, and I don't know how to quantify the ordinarity of the songs, though "non-descript" is a fair definition used in a previous post I just saw.
