I’m afraid I’m going to be away for the 9th and 16th of August sessions too, so I guess I’ll be joining you all again in ‘85?

Anyway just to say thanks for all your hard work in running this and the listen throughs. I’ve been really enjoying it since I got involved, with some lovely nostalgia and some new discoveries thrown in there too!

A great discovery from Depeche Mode this week. Next best ones I already knew are Howard Jones, Thompson Twins and Laura Branigan and next best discoveries were A Flock Of Seagulls and Malcolm McLaren.

RIP Bill Oddie.

Wildlife presenter, broadcaster, comedian, writer, conservationist and sometimes songwriter, musician and pop star, died aged 85.

One of my heroes. An absolute legend 😢

Billy Idol - Eyes Without A Face

George Michael - Careless Whisper

TOP 5

Laura Branigan - Self Control

Hazell Dean - Whatever I Do (Wherever I Go)

Alphaville - Big In Japan

Depeche Mode - Master And Servant

Divine - You Think You're A Man

Next 5

Level 42 - Hot Water

Prince - When Doves Cry

Howard Jones - Like To Get To Know You Well

Jeffrey Osborne - On The Wings Of Love

Miami Sound Machine - Dr Beat

'Self Control' great Italo-disco song and certified classic - I don't watch TV much so I am not bored by the Virgin Media ads with it in it. Hazell Dean's best song here good dance beats and some really interesting industrial dance beats with the Depeche Mode track! 'Big In Japan' builds very good. The instrumental of 'You Think You're A Man' is very modern dance sounding in parts, not so keen on the vocal but it still makes my top 5.

Level 42 are starting to get better now ahead of their mid 80s golden period - 'Hot Water' is a good dance tune! 'When Doves Cry' is such a good song lyrically. Howard Jones has a good tropical pop song there, and also the first verse sounds quite Ace of Base ahead of time. 'On The Wings of Love' is cheesy but a nice song and nostalgic. 'Dr Beat' a good song and I liked it's 'Dr Pressure' revival in 2005.

No! nono An important early fast dance song on the 1984 Hi-NRG scene which was big in that year! Btw on the subject of Hi-NRG I wonder what y'all think of Divine, I like their music after initially not liking the vocal style!

(I haven't gone to the synctube sessions yet sadly)

This is correct and Divine is also a legend!

As a few regular attendees will still be away on Sunday, I'm going to extend the break until the next session for another week - sorry for the fairly late notice. I'll set the dates of the last two 1984 sessions for definite though, so we'll return on Sunday 16 August, and wrap up the year on 23 August!
