FAQs

What is streaming? What are the chart rules regarding streaming?

For streaming and chart rules related FAQs read the pinned thread regarding this.

How many streams equals one download sale?

100 plays if you are on Spotify Premium, or 600 if you are using the ad-supported free tier. However you cannot simply play a song that many times in one day to give it one sale, you are limited to 10 plays per day in terms of what counts to the chart. The number changes to 200 or 1200 plays when a song moves to ACR. For more information on the rules of ACR see this thread.

How much does streaming contribute to the chart?

Streaming contributes over 90% to the singles chart as a whole. Spotify counts for at least half of this, with Apple Music and Amazon also big contributors. YouTube is also big however most of YouTube's streams are at the free tier so won't count for as much.

Why is my fave not doing well?

Is it being promoted on a major curated playlist, and/or going viral on TikTok? If it isn't, it's unlikely to really take off! Hot Hits UK is the biggest of these playlists on Spotify from a UK standpoint. The playlist usually updates itself to include breaking hits once or twice a week, though there is no guarantee that your fave will get a place on the playlist. Also, the UK Top 50 is a largely followed playlist and that songs often experience a 'top 50 effect', when they enter the top 50 and get the additional exposure of being on the playlist. Often sales hits don't cross over to being streaming hits, this is usually the case for songs with an older target audience, reality or campaign songs. Also keep in mind that it often takes longer for a song to take off on Spotify than it would on iTunes.

My fave didn't debut high and is falling already, does this mean they're flopping?

Not necessarily. Most songs debut relatively low as they aren't instantly well-known, and experience a sharp decline on Day 2 as they no longer have the promoted 'New Music Friday' effect. A lot of songs manage to recover through gaining popularity and additions to playlists. Exceptions to the rule of course come from massively hyped releases, such as the recent album impacts from Drake and Taylor Swift.

Spotify

How do I see today's Spotify chart?

To see the daily top 50 update on desktop, log in to Spotify, click 'Browse', then click 'Charts', then click 'United Kingdom Top 50', or click the link below. For the full top 200, use the link below to go to Spotify's website. You can also use the Kworb website which displays the data in an easier to read format and also contains additional information, however this is often out of date.

What are the most influential Spotify playlists?

Links to Spotify's top playlists are as below.

Hot Hits UK

New Music Friday

Today's Top Hits

How often does the Spotify chart update?

It should update once every day, usually in the early afternoon - although on occasion there will be a delay.

What do the numbers mean?

The streaming figures cited in the daily chart are the number of streams each song received the previous day. Unlike the iTunes chart, Spotify is not a rolling chart so the numbers will only change once per day.

Apple Music

How do I see today's Apple Music chart?

You can use the link below to view the Apple Music top 200 through Kworb. If you have Apple Music, you can also view the top 200 by going to the Charts section and clicking on See All in the Top Songs section.

  • Great song, I mean GREAT, and I'm into it since day 1 and still fresh! It's gonna be our privilege this one reaching number 1!

  • The hatred for ‘Rein Me In’. At least it’s a song that’s genuinely connected with the public - it’s had no TV promo, no radio interviews, no official video apart from a tour one cobbled together, not

  • Not my fav Sam track by any means but makes up for so many non top 40 hits before he built his fanbase that def deserved the attention!

That Fred again.. x Jamie T song is quite a banger, easily the most instant thing from him I've ever heard! The 3Quency song is also the best thing they've put out so far.

I don’t know what it is about Fred again.. but I’ve found all his recent releases pretty terrible, the last thing from him I loved was Delilah (pull me out of this) & Danielle (smile on my face)

Although this new one is fairly decent too I quite like it

Charli xcx's 'Chains of Love' has re-entered the Apple chart now the Wuthering Heights soundtrack / movie is out 💖

Hope it can achieve a new peak as I'm a big fan of the song but it came and went quite quickly around the time of the Christmas rush

Not forgetting Rein Me In melb which just wont seem to go away

If Bad Bunny falls off and Dave and Raye go to ACR Rein Me In will be number one, absolutely insane!

'Man I Need' is #1 for a 113rd day and 17th week - it could overtake 'Ordinary' on both counts (128 days, 18 weeks) by the end of the month.

On the weekly chart, 'Raindance' finished about 100k ahead of 'DtMF'. 'The Fate Of Ophelia' is still above 'Opalite'. 'Babydoll' is up by 36% at #35, so an official Top 40 new entry incoming I would think. 'Tití Me Preguntó' is #48 so hopefully high enough for a reset even though it'll be starred out anyway this week.

10% decrease for Bad Bunny, Less than yesterday but still if it keeps declining like that it will be behind Rein me In by Sunday (so Monday's chart)

At least one of my predictions will have panned out

Sombr is not doing a Harry/Bruno which I am very happy about

Edited by Paramore

What do you mean by 'doing a Harry/Bruno'? They had quite different trajectories!

'DtMF' is now #1 on Hot Hits UK so hopefully that might help it hold up a bit better - still not going to hold my breath for it to keep enough momentum to get the official #1 though.

Im intrigued 2 because Harry and bruno have had very different trajectory so far, bruno has literally stayed stable since release , harry debuted high and has fallen of quickly by his standards

Harry was a good launch and rapid decline. Bruno just stagnated.

My comparison here is that with Sombr there is building interest, like his other tracks. He doesn't seem to be the artist that people run to listen to but relies on external forces like TikTok to decide whether his tracks make a dent. While Bruno and Harry's name gets a good initial boost, they had little long term impact. Sombr seems to be the opposite. I think this makes Sombr somewhat of a fragile artist as it kind of seems his success is out of his control. Its a song by song basis. While I think the song is mid, it does seem well curated for that TikTok market

Excluding Christmas songs what is the biggest climb to #1? Perfect? Could Rein Me In beat that?

Yeah I only heard it for the first time the other day and it wasn’t memorable in the slightest.

'Thinking Out Loud' I believe for a continuous run, which 'Rein Me In' would easily beat.

(And if we go by total weeks, 'Perfect' made #1 on its 30th week which it would beat too - can't think of any non-Christmas songs which first made #1 in a later week.)
