Yeah I really like this, very different from the other #1s of the year. Pity it had to have a leg (!) up from a jeans advert, but beggars can’t be choosers!

    I loved it… then I hated it… now we’re on speaking terms

Oh it should be subjective, much more interesting to see how you rank them rather than list what you think other people may want to see ☺️

Love is All Around is okay for what it is, but not something I’d ever seek out - same evaluation I’d give the other mammoth film soundtrack hits from the first half of the 90s. I wouldn’t rank it last

Yeah, I'm with Dandy on this one that it's a number one I'm aware of but I don't really know it/recall anything about it (even though I have heard it several times)

'Saturday Night' is an instant pick-me-up that I can't help but enjoy! The dance routine was a staple of pretty much all school discos and weddings I attended growing up. The memories continued into adulthood as she was on the bill of a We Love The 90s concert I went to, my last pre-Covid gig - it popped off in that setting too.

I really like 'Inside' as well so I'm pleased to see it in your top 5. I guess that post-grunge sound is just up my street in general. I can see why it has been forgotten though, especially as its streaming presence under Stiltskin seems to just be a live version.

Not very keen on this one personally. Quite an unusual chart topper for 1994, so good diversity, but it's not one I would ever play.

The intro was fab, and that's the bit that was on the ad, so that's the bit I remember best. The other bits not nearly so memorable as it didnt get a lot of exposure really, apart from the adverts at the time, or since. I'm speaking of local radio in Dorset and Radio One, maybe it grabbed some in London, but my impression is it didnt hang around for that long. I bought it, it topped my charts, and had a 12 week run so about the same as its chart run then!

It is strange that the original version is not on Spotify, isn't it? I'm really wondering why as I guess it would still get some streams.

Also "Come On You Reds" is not there, which make it only 12 out of 14 available there.

Spotify showing taste there excluding Come on you Reds.

Beside the 14 #1's there were 15 #2's 1994, which I have also put in order:

  1. Corona - The Rhythm Of The Night (2 weeks, hold back by "Saturday Night")

  2. Kylie Minogue - Confide In Me (1 week, hold back by "Love Is All Around")

  3. MC Sar & The Real McCoy - Another Night (1 week, hold back by "Baby Come Back")

  4. Ace Of Base - The Sign (3 weeks, hold back by "Without You" x 2 and "Doop" x 1)

  5. Stone Roses - Love Spreads (1 week, hold back by "Let Me Be Your Fantasy")

  6. Big Mountain - Baby I Love Your Way (3 weeks, hold back by "Love Is All Around")

  7. Crash Test Dummies - MMM MMM MMM MMM (1 week, hold back by "The Most Beautiful Girl In The World")

  8. Toni Braxton - Breathe Again (2 weeks, hold back by "Things Can Only Get Better")

  9. All-4-One - I Swear (7 weeks, hold back by "Love Is All Around")

  10. Let Loose - Crazy For You (2 weeks, hold back by "Love Is All Around")

  11. Mariah Carey - All I Want For Christmas Is You (3 weeks, hold back by "Stay Another Day")

  12. Red Dragon - Compliments On Your Kiss (1 week, hold back by "Love Is All Around")

  13. Bruce Springsteen - Streets Of Philadelphia (1 week, hold back by "Doop")

  14. Bryan Adams, Rod Stewart & Sting - All For Love (1 week, hold back by "Things Can Only Get Better")

  15. Bon Jovi - Always (3 weeks, hold back by "Saturdy Night" x 1 and "Baby Come Back" x 2)

What are your preferences here?

'Inside' (I always remember the artist name Stiltskin but find the title more forgettable) is the one I didn't like at the time - I don't remember seeing the adverts beforehand so was thinking where has this rock band come from. I did warm to it a bit though, and it does stand out sonically among the #1s of the time.

My rank of the #2s would be something like this:

  1. Mariah Carey - All I Want For Christmas Is You (albeit since it eventually reached #1, it probably shouldn't count)

  2. Bruce Springsteen - Streets Of Philadelphia

  3. MC Sar & The Real McCoy - Another Night

  4. Corona - The Rhythm Of The Night

  5. Crash Test Dummies - MMM MMM MMM MMM

  6. Let Loose - Crazy For You

  7. Ace Of Base - The Sign

  8. Kylie Minogue - Confide In Me

  9. Stone Roses - Love Spreads

  10. Bon Jovi - Always

  11. Toni Braxton - Breathe Again

  12. All-4-One - I Swear

  13. Red Dragon - Compliments On Your Kiss

  14. Big Mountain - Baby I Love Your Way

  15. Bryan Adams, Rod Stewart & Sting - All For Love

I actually like all of these down to 'I Swear' to some degree, and the bottom 3 aren't too bad either.

'Another Night' and 'Rhythm of the Night' are joyous.

'Crazy For You' is cheesy but a good upbeat pop song.

Spotify playlist of the #2's - just All 4 Love is not the single version, all others are available:

There are a few Europop songs that have very similar female and male vocal style to 'Another Night' by The Real McCoy on videos of Switzerland Alpine scenery on Tiktok. Almost certainly AI songs though. nocheer. I wish humans would make songs like 'Another Night' again instead.

Agree with your top 4. As per usual, the number 2s are way better than the number 1s.

Youssou N'Dour & Neneh Cherry - 7 Seconds

#4:

Prodigy - No Good (Start The Dance)

D:Ream - U R The Best Thing

Erasure - Always

#5

Reel 2 Real - I Like To Move It

Blur - Boys & Girls

Ace Of Base - Don't Turn Around

#6

Snap! - Welcome To Tomorrow

Absolutely Fabulous - Absolutely Fabulous

2 Unlimited - The Real Thing

#7

Cappella - Move On Baby

Elton John & Rupaul - Don't Go Breaking My Heart

Whigfield - Another Day

#8

Degrees Of Motion - Shine On

M-Beat - Incredible

Morrissey - The More You Ignore Me The Closer I Get

#9

Gloworm - Carry Me Home

New Order - True Faith 94

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Give It Away

#10

Deep Forest - Sweet Lullaby

Pretenders - I'll Stand By You

Oasis - Live Forever

About those 1994 songs, I remember Youssou + Neneh - 7 Seconds from the time, just great.

D:Ream - U R The Best Thing (Perfecto Radio Mix) is one of my faves of 1994, chorus is so joyous.

Cappella - Move On Baby good too.

I think Boyzone and their producers were definitely influenced for 'A Different Beat' from Enigma - Return to Innocence.

Gloworm - Carry Me Home is a great dance tune but forgotten apart from maybe Christian radio, as its quite gospely.

Snap - Welcome To Tomorrow sounds influential for the whole Clubland sound of the early 00s like XTM - Fly On The Wings Of Love.

Finally the Outhere Brothers in 1995 took Reel 2 Reel's production!

Here’s my #2 rankings

  1. Bruce Springsteen - Streets Of Philadelphia

  2. Crash Test Dummies - MMM MMM MMM MMM

  3. Ace Of Base - The Sign

  4. Corona - The Rhythm Of The Night

  5. Kylie Minogue - Confide In Me

  6. Stone Roses - Love Spreads

  7. MC Sar & The Real McCoy - Another Night

  8. Mariah Carey - All I Want For Christmas Is You

  9. Let Loose - Crazy For You

  10. Toni Braxton - Breathe Again

  11. Bon Jovi - Always

  12. All-4-One - I Swear

  13. Red Dragon - Compliments On Your Kiss

  14. Bryan Adams, Rod Stewart & Sting - All For Love

  15. Big Mountain - Baby I Love Your Way

'Baby I Love Your Way' is a cover and both versions are quite similar. Peter Frampton is a very similar style vocalist to Joaquin "Quino" McWhinney from Big Mountain.

'All For Love' I like - it's preferable to 'Everything I Do..'.
