Thank you @Chez Wombat for hosting this nice little contest and the great presentation of the results. This contest was quite challenging for me as it is very difficult to rank all thesr different music from different decades. Congrats to @dandy* for winning this - "Dare" is a great album and "The Things ..." is a great winning song. A pity that the Moby song got deduction for non-voting as I gave my 12 points to it - a timeless rave classic! My favourite discoveries of this contest were the songs from Hooverphonic and Starseeds, so happy that they made at least the top 20.

I am happy with a top 10 spot for Innocence. I was quite lucky getting 1990 from the lottery. This was my second year I was totally into music and followed the charts - it started through 1989. I had several options to choose from and decided to take a not too obscure choice. Innocence had a great output in 1990/1991 - the whole album "Belief" is full of great downtempo songs, of which "Natural Thing" is the biggest one with the iconic use of "Shine On You Crazy Diamond", which fit so greatly into this song. Indeed one of my favourite songs of all time.

@TheSnake can you stop entering contests and not voting every single time? It's annoying to waste points on entries for people who never intend to vote. Signed, Buzzjack!

Thanks very much Chez for the great concept. Well done dandy*. And seven for almost giving us such an eclectic winner - slightly kicking myself for not giving that more points.

It isn’t an easy year but maybe a pioneering slice of Turkish folk wasn’t the way to go for 1964z I had considered some other options all of which I love in different ways. Julie Grant might have been quite up Buzzjack’s street with hindsight.

Wow, harsh 😆

I would've liked to be here for the rest of the results but the sleepy-bug got to me so I decided to call it a night, was nice to catch up early this morning though.

I was so surprised to get (I think) four 12s, thank you! And an okay mid-table position and being the third highest from the 70s songs is not too shabby. The SyncTube reaction for my song was rather muted and after the slow start, I was really thinking I might finish somewhere in the bottom 5 or something. Glad it connected with some of you anyway, it's a lovely song with a great melody.

I nearly always seem to have at least one song where I correctly identify the user behind it in my head without saying anything - this time it was @Bror as I had a feeling you sent 'Blackouts' haha. Great entry too, I could see myself listening to it again (I have playlists now for the songs I voted for in all the song contests so that could easily happen).

Nice to see @nine¾ do well in another song contest too! Let's hope this continues. Thanks @Chez Wombat for hosting - loved this concept, some interesting entries, and I enjoyed getting a slightly more challenging year!

Thank you so much @Chez Wombat for your excellent hosting, my first of hopefully many competitions, I loved the idea of choosing from 1 random year and felt the more challenging the year the better (my masochistic tendencies coming to the fore). It was excellent fun choosing but even more fun listening to everyone’s wonderful eclectic choices, I’ve got so many ‘new’ artist’s back catalogue to dig into now! Then the voting results were brilliant whilst also tense, and so well hosted, well done!

Congratulations to the podium @jimwatts @seven. And especially @dandy* for your win, it’s an excellent song that I’ve always loved and stands out even on the fantastic Dare album.

Also thanks to @gooddelta (very close to the podium) for your brilliant song choice and @matto for my absolute favourite!

Thank you so much for anyone voting for the Buzzcocks, sorry if it was a bit obvious choice, as I said earlier I wasn’t quite ready for just how obscure you guys were prepared to go! I’ve entered unusual stuff to rates on the chart forum before only for them to be completely ignored, so I guess I’ve learned that this is a very different crowd 🤣!

I promise to do better next time. Speaking of which, when can we do it again please……….?

I am very rude, sorry. Congratulations to @dandy* for your win of course - coming so soon after your BJSC win, oh my! The song wasn't a fave of mine but I was happy to make other fantastic discoveries from this contest (as well as voting for one song I already knew well ('Eden'), and one I had heard once but didn't remember ('Parallel Life')).

Congrats on the win dandy*! And thanks for the fab hosting Chez!

I did as well as I expected… not very. lol I thought I struck gold with 1996 but then soon realised I had too much to choose from! Thanks to the few of you who gave some points to Shakira nonetheless. ❤️🥲

Thanks for hosting Chez, one of my fave contests so far, very varied set of entries and some classic faves. Well done everyone! Well done dandy* on the win, I might well have gone for that one myself with 1981 (or Twilight ELO). Fab to see Four Jacks & A Jill doing so well, one beloved childhood song that nobody outside our family seemed to know in the UK and I'm not sure I would have been brave enough to go for it so kudos for including it Rich, and also the Supremes classic being entered, pure class. Thanks everyone voting for Lightning Seeds' gem, I always felt aggrieved it wasnt a major hit, I rate it among their best tracks.

I fell asleep before results concluded so just been catching up!

'The Things That Dreams Are Made Of' immediately stands out as a hot favourite to me. It's of course from the Human League's classic DARE album but also has a bit of noughties appeal, as it was incorporated as part of Richard X's 'Finest Dreams' mash-up with Kelis too. Great tune.

Congrats Dandy <3 the Human League are one of my favourite '80s synth-pop acts so an entirely unsurprising 12, happy the song I enjoyed most won, even if not a discovery. I see the rest of my podium (Tülay German and Codeine) finished outside of the top 20 though. Justice for the former but the latter was of course hampered by a deduction. Good to see a couple of '60s songs placing in the top tier even if Tülay was a bit slept on, especially Master Jack, which I'll definitely be returning to. Looks like I voted for 6/10 with T-SQUARE, XTC, Innocence and Ashra also making my points.

Happy enough with 18th for the Starseeds after their points seriously dried up for a while! A slight improvement on my last performance. Trip-hop can be a tough nut to crack recently, like Jupiterdonia DNQing and Deandria finishing bottom 5 in the latest BJSC (both robbed x), so I'm glad this didn't totally bomb and a few enjoyed it enough for medal points. Thank you to Roba for topping up my tally since I last commented btw!

Thank you Chez for a great hosting job - I am a fan of the Lottery concept and enjoyed reading your well-researched commentaries in this thread. happy

I was out last night so only just caught up with this - congrats dandy* and great hosting Chez!

Considering that I struggled with my given year of 1965, I'm very happy with that unexpected top 5 finish, The Supremes clearly have a lot of love on Buzzjack, thank you to anyone who gave me points and especially to the couple of people who gave me 12 points D

Oh and I probably should have guessed Roba would be behind my favourite song in the contest - that Bangles song is such a gem, I'm glad it did reasonably well and was hopefully a great discovery for some of you!

Well I felt that after drawing 1962 it would be a tall order to continue my top 10 streak but lo and behold Dylan did it! Talk about a marmite entry though, only 9 votes of which 7 of them were medal positions - big thanks to the big fans!

And this after being vetoed (my original choice was Dick Dale & The Del Tones - Misirlou) makes it especially satisfying. But glad I had a strong back-up, I wouldn't consider myself a big Dylan fan (in fact when I was younger I actively disliked his music lol) but this entry definitely stands out with a timeless feel to it. It really doesn't sound that out of place among the Zach Bryan's in the charts of today and of course the lyrical content still rings true all these years later.

Great to see the legendary Tears Don't Lie finish on the podium, this song holds a cult-like status within my friendship group but aside from that it's a 10/10 all out banger so glad it was received well in a song contest on here. Otherwise not a great top 10, esecially the winning song which was one of my least favourites from the whole field oops. But nevertheless a big congrats to dandy who now takes the top spot in the leaderboard! (And jimwatts joins me in equal third if both my memory of the points system & my maths are on point).

Big hand to Chez for hosting, I'll need to have a closer read through the posts on each act.

Also very shocked that there were more 60s top in the top 10 than 90s songs :O and what the hell happened to Poison Girl Friend?!

This is the updated league table after 13 contests. Dandy makes up the 9 point gap to Addy, who didn't score any points, and is now the new leader. Jim was 6 points behind Dobbo but they are now tied in 3rd place. With a gap of 21 points to 5th place, it will take some time for anyone else to make it into the top 4.

Link to full spreadsheet for completeness x

I can't complain at The Human League winning as I did vote for it, although I was really hoping for a surprise given everyone was expecting it, though I'm pleased it was a bit closer than expected as it did seem like they were quite unbeatable at one point. Mark'Oh was a real surprise package at the start and Travelers getting so close to winning at the end was wonderful to see, really glad to see both rock instrumentals go down well. I liked all of the top 10 even if I couldn't fit them all into my votes, a shame both of the trip hop entries couldn't make it in the top 10 but pleased they at least found varying levels of niche support x

I'm pleased with 19th for myself, it's been on my potentials list for a while, and being just an album track and a fairly chill/downtempo one at that, I thought it might struggle to stand out, so pleased it found a few fans in the end, and at least it didn't suffer the same fate as two of the Japanese entries whoops (almost regret not giving a few points to Rainy Day Woman now as that definitely didn't deserve last! </3)

I was pleased with how spread out the votes were across years, I thought the 90s may dominate but actually just two making it to the top 10 compared to three 60s songs is an unexpected turnout (two of those three by legacy acts granted, but Master Jack is certainly a surprise), also cool how the 80s bookended the scoreboard, and one good thing about TheSnake not voting was it did allow a 70s song to make the top 10 to make at least one from each decade getting there (apart from the 40s ofc. but the fact that wasn't dead last is something!), it was weird how close together they all stayed, although I suppose those styles would have similar fans.

Thanks for the kind comments, the commentaries were just Wikipedia pastes a lot of the time, but always happy to educate!

When I logged on and saw the number of notifications I assumed that Human League must have won - but I'm glad to see it wasn't a runaway winner like some were predicting. I can't remember if I mentioned in the thread but I actually really struggled with 1981... when Chez sent it through my initial reaction was great because I assumed that there would be lots from that era that I liked, but when I trawled through albums released that year I was finding that I didn't really like anything on them aside from the singles, or the things I did like (such as OMD's Architecture & Morality album) seemed to have tracks that didn't work as well as stand alone ones outside of the album experience. I also spent ages searching for underrated 1981 tracks/albums etc but that just seemed to bring up lots of US rock albums... so in the end I just gave up and sent the only album track I could find that I thought would work in the contest. It's obviously nice to have won, but I'm also conscious that some people felt that it was too well known so feeling a little awkward about it 🫣

For me, nearly all the selections I enjoyed the most were in the earlier years - those of you who got those did amazingly well and I'd have loved to see one of them win instead <3

Thanks Chez for choosing an interesting theme that clearly appealed to a lot of people given the record number of participants! I definitely found it more difficult to think of tracks in this style but it did generate a really interesting mix of entries.

This was fun! Thanks for hosting this round, and thanks voters for the points for Marsha Hunt!

^ actually meant to mention in my ramble post that in retrospect I kind of wish I had voted for Marsha Hunt's 22, it's been stuck in my head a lot in the last couple of days! Was all very hard to order between my 6 pointer and my top few commiserations though.

Congrats Dandy on the win cheer

Sun Of Jamaica finished much lower than I would have expected, but thankful to everyone who voted for <3.

Originally confirmed Boney M, but that was vetoed due to the fact that it was too known and the sample was used in Duck Sauce - Barbara Streisand, a huge hit in itself!!!

And last, thank you Chez for a wonderful contest it was fun and enjoyed it a lot <3
