What are some of your favourite Key Changes in music?

Key changes (modulations) elevate energy, shift moods, and prevent tracks from sounding repetitive. While iconic, they differ greatly in their approach—ranging from the dramatic, Broadway-style power shift to seamless, hidden modulations within the verse or chorus.

A couple of examples:

  • Beyoncé - Love On Top

  • Michael Jackson - Man In The Mirror > The key change being on the lyric of "CHANGE..."! <

  • Whitney Houston - I Have Nothing

What are some of your personal favourites? Do you like the full song or do you just like that specific moment?

Honestly they're so few and far between nowadays that we should BRING THEM BACK!

  • The key change in Sisqo's 'Thong Song' is legitimately pretty epic

Insert various X Factor alumni here Nah but seriously though, Leona Lewis - Run comes to mind, always gave me chills in that key change especially the live performance

My favourite unexpected one ever has to be Dappy - No Regrets with BTS - Dynamite a close second.

EXCELLENT choices! wub

'Church' was largely my inspo for this thread (I saw someone reacting to it a day or so ago). 'Six' is incredible! A lot of musicals could be included here tbh!

Charlotte Perrelli - Hero

Christina Aguilera - I Turn To You

Delta Goodrem - Born To Try

Eternal Feat. BeBe Winans - I Wanna Be The Only One (like Love On Top, this has a few)

Jenny Silver / Steps - Something In Your Eyes

M2M - Don't Say You Love Me

Sanna Nielsen - I'm In Love

Sanna Nielsen - Nobody Without You

Sanna Nielsen - Undo

Shakin' Stevens - Merry Christmas Everyone

Sheppard - A Grade Playa

I could probably think of quite a lot more I love tbh! Sanna is queen of the key change, I could list several more from her too.

Shakin' Stevens - Merry Christmas Everyone: "SNOW IS FALLING"

Spitting Image - The Chicken Song

and the key change to end all key changes:

Westlife - You Raise Me Up

I know it’s already been mentioned but No Regrets is my favourite ever. It’s so just unexpected in that type of song

I know you’re really talking about upward key changes, but I wanted to add one of my nerdy musical loves, the rare downward key change. Rather than hyping up the song, it creates a more somber emotional feeling, and when done well it sounds great!

Some examples:-

How Will I Know? - Whitney Houston

Under The Bridge - Red Hot Chilli Peppers

Our House - Madness

And my absolute favourite!

The Youth - MGMT

So many Celine songs to choose from!

Of recent songs Loreen - Tattoo & Delta Goodrem - Eclipse are up there for me

Ooh my favourite downward key change would certainly be Johnny Cash's I Walk The Line, the deep bassy verse is best part of the song.
