RIP this series' old man then </3 (although grateful for last series' old man to still retain the title of highest placing for selfish reasons 😎) Not a surprise with both of his big ones gone, it was just a matter of time and I NEVER expected him to get to the live shows over Calvin even with a classic like Cars so I think that's achievement enough, Intruder was a really good choice being a small BJSC hit back in the day and I thought all the picks were really good, particularly My Name is Ruin.

I was unsure between Julian and Jade for who sent him, but Julian being him does make me near certain of who Jade sent now!

Tom Grennan really should've used this round for the Gilette song, a tragedy that that goes unsent </3

Very glad New Order are safe though as I agree we're still yet to see their best work and hopefully they'll be OK with this theme, there's a version of that one they could go for here, although it would be a shame to have the original unavailable as it is much better

I was going to write something long, going into various things, but I wont as I will probably ramble and I don't want to come across overly salty. But just to get the first bit out of the way before going to the positives.

I'm Out! I can’t say I’m overly displeased, or surprised, as I have found this series to be fairly tough going. Particularly the last few rounds which have proven to be quite disheartening and frustrating… but to be honest its kinda felt like that since around Round 3 onwards. Then it became obvious that not matter what song I sent it there was a portion of voters who would put me last regardless (or that’s how it seemed playing/ watching on). So it has felt at times, 2 months of decision making being rubbished/ negated - which has been frustrating. But its the nature of the competition and tbh given how the votes were going each Round, its a minor miracle he made the lives anyway! (or more the case, I just wasn't deemed the very worst each round).

 

Not to focus on the negatives – its always good to play, chat and be involved. And that’s probably the big take away from this series; chatting to a number of people and having a laugh. Shout out to @Spiceboy and @Lee_J in particular. Its also been good finding new songs too, and being reminded of others which i've long forgotten. Also thanks off course to @Calum for hosting/ running - always do it perfectly... even if you couldn't magic up an extra 50-100 points for me to stay in the game 🤣

I doubt I'll be who you're talking about, even though I didn't put Tom particularly high, but I definitely understand negative comments from the same people week after week can feel quite deflating and disheartening (I say that fully aware I've been voting New Order, Gary Numan etc bottom nearly the whole way and why I try and keep my commentary quite light). All These Nights is his best song imo and I didn't get a chance to vote that highly - I do think his songs are good, I just don't enjoy his voice and that's quite a hard barrier to overcome musically.

You've played a REALLY good game to get him to the finals though as I don't think I'd have called him outlasting Calvin or Lewis, so kudos for that.

Gutted for Tom too. Definitely feel like he could’ve / should’ve lasted a few more rounds yet. But I’m happy I got to discover a few new Tommy bops over the last month or so! Sad we will never get to hear Psychadelic Kisses now though 💔

Oh I had noticed your comments on his voice (along with some others 🤣) - I was initially surprised as it hadn't occurred to me that his voice would be an issue 🤭

But its fine - I was expecting the comments each round in the end, and there wasn't much I could really do about it - as when I tried later album stuff which possibly wasn't as gravely (Boys Don't Cry), that seemed to get weirdly slated - and that was for being shouty... when it wasn't.

I guess everyone has different tastes. I'm at peace with it now 🤣

Psychedelic Kisses was on the list to use. I wanted to go back to the first album, as I'd only used 1 song from there - and both the previous themes didn't let me use anything from there which is why I didn't use it Round 1.

Also shame he's out before this current theme, as Lionheart, or the Chase and Status song could've been used... or his Calvin song!

Well done Julian for getting Gary Numan this far. I was another one who thought he was Jade.

'White China' springs to mind for something dancey if Ultravox were still in the competition but I would have had a listen to the many remixes of some of their other songs on Spotify.

Sorry to both mentors for going out this round, but on a positive note, you actually made it to LIVE Rounds over so many other BJ fave artists like Agnes, Calvin, Leona etc. etc.

Also with Julian and Scene out, means we have a new winner this year

Round 9: Live Show One in Budapest

Results

A shame to see Tom out and particularly on that song, 'Royal Highness' is fantastic and one of his best but with all the #15 votes coming in I could see the writing on the wall.

A shame also for Gary as I put 'Cars' in top spot to keep him in, but there's nothing I can really say to defend the song choice this round as I couldn't put it anywhere other than last given some of the lyrics.

Oh not too far behind! At the start of the week I was expecting him to like 100+ points behind! but 11 points isn't too shabby!

Amazing results for Sophie and Bananarama but they are great songs!

Well done ElectroBoy and Julian, and apologies to the former for ranking Tom low a fair bit. I do like a few of his hits that you presumably didn’t have a chance to play and a couple of songs I enjoyed in there too. I didn’t realise I liked so much by Gary Numan but he has a lot of undeniable classics and then you pulled a few good discoveries out too Julian, great job. I was so certain you had Kate Bush!

Remixes and bangers… not sure it’s an ideal round for me haha. However I will intend to send one of the songs left I really want to play, it will just be in remix form.

So unlike the whole of last series, the decision of the judges went against the 2nd/3rd bottom placing for who to eliminate!

Also it looks like New Order would have finished last if I hadn't voted at all, oof...
