  • A Sunday is as perfect conditions as Christmas songs will get for 1st November. Last year 1st November was a Saturday and a lot of people will have also been doing belated Halloween parties I expect.

  • Lady Gaga had more songs on Spotify’s Global chart than any other artist on Halloween, with eight: 19. Bloody Mary (RE), 2.6 million 21. Die With A Smile (-5), 2.6 million 92. The Dead Dance (RE), 1.

Last year 1st November was a Saturday and a lot of people will have also been doing belated Halloween parties I expect. Coming straight into the new month on a Sunday, post Halloween festivites, and on a day when people love listening to old favourites, it doesn't surprise me the effect is so big. I doubt it will be this big next year when it falls on a Monday. Now if somebody could give the curated Christmas playlists an update and a shake up, that would be ideal.

Mariah didn't increase that much compared to last year, but why Last Christmas did so well?

this year to save them (the listening public) from tears they gave it (their streams) to someone (Wham!) special 🥹

(on a more serious note, last year's November 1st was an exception and in previous years Wham! have been closing the gap on Mariah earlier and earlier)

I don’t know why it has done quite so well, but partly because it is 10 years since George Michael passed away. It is also number 1 on Christmas Hits. Being a Sunday also helps.

As everyone else has said, this is the first time that Wham! have been ahead of Mariah on November 1st on Spotify. They are also far ahead on Apple.

Apple

28 Wham! (Still climbing)

90 Mariah

There are also two other versions of ‘Last Christmas’ with considerable streams on Spotify - I won’t be able to work out until tomorrow the combined figure, but it is even further ahead of AIWFC than this.

This is by far the, highest those songs have been on November 1, and the most Christmassy that Spotify has been on this date.

2020 what’s the year that Christmas songs really started? streaming this early, and like this year, November 1 was a Sunday:

Sunday 1st November 2020

54 Mariah 102,703 streams

70 Wham! 82,838 streams

…but the Chart Update will be interesting as Mariah is ahead of Wham! on Amazon - so she may end up being the one getting the headlines!

important to note that All I Want For Christmas Is You has two versions which chart on Apple Music each year so the gap is likely a bit smaller there than it looks!

Yes - that’s true. This used to be the case for ‘Last Christmas’ as well, but I don’t remember if it is so much any more - however as ‘Last Christmas’ has other mixes that do well on Spotify, I would imagine that this would also be the case on Apple.

looking at my Apple Music archives for last year, Last Christmas only had one version charting in their top 100 whereas on Christmas Day AIWFCIY was at #5 and #56, so I think Wham!'s versions are being combined for now

It is to someone who doesn’t use social media like Tik Tok.

That’s fine, but you must have seen the immediate impact of it just by your presence here on this forum and following the charts etc..?

Remember one thing Christmas song is November week day tend dip then pick up weekend dip back down agin till December that all ways pattern

As I said before the Pudding Mix is going majorly viral with younger people early 20's 😂 So expect Wham! to keep climbing.

Nice to see Cigarette Smoke re-enter! I'm really hoping this one can have its moment on the charts

Will this finally be the year Spotify gives British artists’ christmas songs their fair share of exposure?

There are so many potential classics that deserve to be everywhere.

Sadly that's more prone to happen with Amazon Originals.
