I am suprised that razorlight are no4 aswell!

Thought they might be no2.

Nah its the kinda thing that does better on itunes than anywhere else.

Out of the top 40, along with Ting Tings, Oasis, Flobots, Miley Cyrus and Kid Rock

Damn Flobots are out already :arrr:

LSP Top 80

PD Top 170

Oh dear and at Bloc Party.

I don't know anyone outside of this forum who doesn't like the song...all of my friends and family love it!

None of my friends would even consider trying to like it because Girls Aloud is in front of it. I bet they do really :P

Anyway i never thought GA would have potentially the highest single sales of the year probably until christmas :o . I reckon Mercy can be beaten. Now its pushing overrated-ness but compared to their previous singles like SNNN, I Think We're Alone Now and most of their first few top 3 singles i guess it deserves to sell that much...

im so pleased Girls Aloud are going to no.1 its long overdue and it is quite a shock as its not their greatest song but hey they still have a loyal fanbase and i hope Sugababes climb with their album or theyll start slipping
though they are not my cuppa....

I would like to say Sugababes are by far a better group than GA :) (IMO)

:( After i have bigged up oasis for weeks now!!!

lol only kiddin. Thats your opinion, nothing wrong with that. It all depends on the individual.

Omg! GA! Bloody amazing sales! The power of X factor? Having bought the physical on monday, i'm happy with the numbers

Sugababes though- really tough week but disappointing. The album is good, and only £6.71 in Asda this week (but think it's going back up next like Keane's did so buy this week anyone thinking about it!)

Also im very pleased for Girls Aloud because this would be their first number 1 which hasnt had the backing of being a charity single or the corronation single from Popstars am I right? :)

Yeah totally. Perhaps some singles of theirs deserved it more but The Promise is very catchy, fun and very GA. Its about time they scored a true no1, they've earned it.

i think the 'Babes have picked the complete wrong week to release the album, when up against the Kaisers, AC/DC, the Jenkins, and still Keane from last week too. Hopefully it will creep upwards through the week.

And  to GA!

There's no "right week" at this time of year though as most weeks until Dec. now have big releases. Next week they'd be up against Snow Patrol.

Except GA's album release week, which is otherwise pretty quiet. Now that would've been interesting! :P

24k :o biggest first mids sale of 2008! really deserves it in my opinion, this band just seem to be getting bigger and bigger every year!

I thought it might be the biggest of the year, but it really is? that's so unprecendented for them, excellent! Don't know if it'll beat Mercy's peak week though, as X factor effect wears off and with only 1CD format (wasn't there a Limited 7" Vinyl as well though?)

I must admit, after cts i thought they would never have another no1.

Me2, i think i actually mentioned that i thought if CTS couldn't do it, what would? I didn't think the Promise was quite strong enough, although good. It does grow on you though! Its great they are still to hit their peak as a band, and they now will have more consecutive top 10s than Abba or the Beatles- they're beating legends! :D

^^ i have to say, i have thought the promise would go number 1 for a while now. I'm really glad its doing well.

you were pretty confident in the face of all the naysayers! it's certainly looking good for sunday :)

I absolutely hated Love Machine, definitely one of their worst imo. The Show pisses all over it :D I think SNN was a mess, but I loved the intro. Call The Shots and Can't Speak French are amongst their best i'd say.

Ha ha, I love it that we have such completely different opinions on their songs! I thought Love Machine was great fun, I can barely remember The Show, or indeed Can't Speak French.

Call The Shots was brilliant though.

I don't follow them that closely tbh, do they have the same songwriters or lots of different ones - I'd expect the latter as their songs are so different - and do they have any input themselves?

For me, the big test is, would a GA song be a hit if sung by someone else? ie without five instantly recognizable (and pretty) faces and their column inches of celeb magazine press and general ubiquitous presence in our national life? In my opinion:

The Promise, CTS, Love Machine, Wake Me Up, Underground, Life Got Cold, No Good Advice - yes

The Show, Long Hot Summer, Can't Speak, SNNN, Whole Lotta History, Something Kinda Ooh - no

Biology's a funny one, kinda quirky, I like it, but probably not hit material for an unknown.

^^ xenomania is the "6th member of GA", they have produced all their songs. The have done a song with the pet shop boys on this new album but its also with xenomania.

Brian higgins has spent a hell of a lot of time with the girls and knows them through out. He described them each as inspirations to him when he writes their music. So basically, its like GA are writing the music because its all about them but xenomania is writing and producing most of it if thats makes sense. They just arent putting the pen onto the paper as such. Arent they called muses?

That´s such a nice way sayng they´re a musical act with no musical capacity. It actually even makes them seem good. You should be their spokesperson.

And by the way, WOW at Sugababes album...

Only 7k sold in its first day. And that includes all the pre-orders from itunes, amazon, HMV, etc.

I´m speechless. I know that girl bands like these always sell few albums proportional to the amount of exposure they have. But for an album whose lead single was #1 in the airplay chart and performed in several TV shows, I´d say this is a nuclear disaster... I´m speechless!!!!

As mentioned, it was the power of the X-Factor that's got this to #1.

I do like some of their songs, but this one is too weak. I bet if someone else sang this, it wouldnt have been #1. probably wouldnt have been top 10!

Yes ... and that is why Leon went straight to number 1 last Sunday!

A performance on X-Factor doesn't guarantee a number 1 ... you have to have a decent song to begin with and The Promise is more than decent.

call the shots hit #3 with a great performance on the X Factor last year, #1 is not always a certainty.

I'm not sure that true, like someone said, not all songs that get sung on the xfactor go to number one. And its not fair to say that anyway because without seeing what would have happend without the xfactor performance, no-one knows what would have happened.

Also, thats a bit silly to say about another act singing the song. There are a lot of acts out there where the popularity is down to the act, not the actual song. I'm not saying its all about the act, but it can sometimes help.

It's a combination of things that determine whether a song performed on the x factor goes on to be a really big hit or not. Obviously the performance alone generates a good amount of sales, but it is the combination of peak time TV exposure and radio airplay that make the biggest hits. The songs that have done the best out of x factor - Bleeding Love and now The Promise are high in the radio airplay charts. Performing the song on x factor with limited or no airplay produces a smaller hit.

^^ exactly, i mean didnt duran duran and celine dion sing new songs on the xfactor which were doing badly on airplay and so didnt chart anywhere noteable?
