It seems pretty obvious Joe will be the last #1 of the decade...

He probably won't because the decade ends NEXT year. It's 2001-2010, 2011-2020 etc.

As far as I'm concerned.

EDIT. OK, that's what my history teacher used to say. It looks like pop culture goes 2001-2009 etc.

I was really hoping this argument would never come about :(

That's not the way decades work... okay so the first decade AD was the years 1-9 because there wasn't a year 0, but since then a decade has ALWAYS been defined as xxx0-xxx9. The first decade was just an odd one.

um.. NO

Actually Arthur is right.

Just like the 21st century/3rd millenium started on the 1st of January 2001 (and not 2000), the decade started on the 1st of january 2001, and will include 2010 or it wouldn't be 10 years.

Millenium are defined as x001 to x000 (1 to 1000, 1001 to 2000, 2001 to 3000, etc), centuries are defined as xx01 to xx00, and decades are defined as xxx1 to xxx0.

its easier to count decades as 0-9 because its difficult to call it the nineties when it includes 2000 and yet 1990 is part of the eighties.

Millennium has two 'n's in it just fyi.

And, err, WRONG. The 'new millennium' festivities were held around 1st January 2000. The ENTIRE POPULATION OF THE WORLD could not cock that up without it getting noticed.

+ as T Boy says, in the post above me, the 90s are called the 90s because they were nineteen NINETY (x). 2000 is not, and 1990 is.

Hehe sorry, it has one 'n' in French so I got confused

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In contemporary history, the third millennium is a period of time that commenced on January 1, 2001, and will end on December 31, 3000, of the Gregorian calendar. This is the third period of one thousand years in the Common Era.

About the decades though, it seems there is two possible counting systems, depending if you take a cardinal or ordinal system...

Surely a typo - IGF can't be between Alex @ 21 and N-Dubz @ 22? Are N-Dubz actually #23?

Anyway, nice to see Mumford & Sons top 40, hope they hold it ^_^

Sorted IGF is #23

THIS

Trust this argument to come up Braydon is right. The decade ends with 2009.

Millennium has two 'n's in it just fyi.

There was a argument in 1999 about the Millennium. Some said it should have been at the end of 2000 i.e. at the end of 2000...Another thousand years exactly had passed.

But there can`t be any argument about the new decade starting on the 1st Jan 2010. I mean if it were 2011, then it would have cocked up everything. As in 1970 was the start of the 70s, 1980 start of the 80s etc. As you are correct in saying Bray. Logic is a Decade = 10 years, of the current decade be it 90s, 2000s whatever.

Shall we explain it in detail to the people that find it hard to understand 1970 = 1 Year, 1971 = 2 Years 1972, = 3 Years, 1973 = 4 Years, 1974 = 5 Years, 1975 = 6 Years, 1976 = 7 Years, 1977 = 8 Years, 1978 = 9 Years, 1979 = 10 Years...The Decade.

I remember back in time in a Pub, a couple arguing about the number of lamp posts in their cul-de-sac. One argued, there was 5, another 4. Some nutter decided it was better to count the spaces in between lamp posts, and not the actual lamps. This bloody stupid argument went on all evening. In the end, I dragged them all out of the pub, and made them count the ruddy things. They all then went quiet! What a bunch of twits, they were.

Oh God, decades came into it. A decade means 10 years - it doesn't necessarily mean 2000-2009 or 2001-2010. It could be 1995-2004.

However, most people think of a decade as what the third number of the year is. The 'Noughties' decade is 2000 to 2009. Just like the 90s was 1990-1999. People don't say 2000 was in the 90s.

Actually the argument about 2001 being the first year of the new millenium is technically correct. The whole 2000 thing was just cos of the symbolism of 1999 going to 2000.

Indeed it is!

Now then...back on track with the thread, please folks!

If 2000 to 2009 is Noughties, what do we call 2010 to 2119 the Oneties  :heehee:

Now that is a dilemma :drama:

The Tens, I think

Are people just going going to call 2020-2029 The Twenties even though the 1920s already has this claim?

In italy we call them:

2000-2009 - the first DECADE OF THE CENTURY

2010 - 2020 - THE YEARS "10"

2020 2030 the 20's

etc etc

Noughties, teenies, tweenies, threenies, fournies, feenies, seenies, seveenies, eenies, neenies, noughtnies. SIMPLES :kink:
