No. They screwed "Give Me All Your Luvin'" from going top 20, they shouldn't revert their decision just because this has gone much higher than tracks with previous pre-order deals like this.

 

I agree, its make a mockery out of Coldplay and the Madonna tracks. The record companies should know the rules and regulations, its the record company at fault.

 

Then again, it wouldn't be the first time the rules have changed. The change in 2007, though posistive, made a bit of a mockery of tracks like Chasing Cars, Crazy, Maneater and Monster disappearing completely during 2006. I honestly don't care though, I'm rapidly losing interest in the charts as it is.

I don't buy the "oh well we can't change the rules now, it'd make a mockery of those who fell foul of it in the past" argument. That was their fault, and yes Bowie's label would have looked into it had they even considered the possibility of him going to #1. However, when it's a potential #1 record being disqualified it's a different matter - it was never a case of that back in 2006 as every song that got deleted was already falling.

 

If the OCC have the means to separate album preorders and individual downloads, they should do so and let the latter count towards the chart. If they can't, they should talk to iTunes about it sharpish so this kind of thing can't happen again.

And people said old acts couldn't take advantage of low January sales and gain a number one anymore....

Prec isely. There's no point in arguing against the rules. If people pre-order the album then that should count as a sale for the album, not the individual track. However, it should be possible to separate the sales of the song from pre-orders of the album. That's the point that should be made to the OCC. There are two entries on the iTunes chart which suggests iTunes are counting them separately so it should be simple enpugh for that information to be communicated to the OCC.

Yay for Brit.I.Am, low sales though, so thats probably why it was so easy for David Bowie and Bon Jovi to reach as high as they have done on itunes.

What a wonderfully interesting week this has turned out to be! I can only echo whats already been mentioned, Coldplay & Madonna weren't ever selling enough to be number 1 through pre-order sales so it was not a HUGE omission not featuring either, unlike what this will be. I do hope, whatever happens, that they provide its total sales for the week so we know what would've happened.
