Just saw in the cinema White House Down, and when I prepped Gold Digger (the chart run), Jamie Foxx looked so familiar and then I realized that he was the president in the film. Dumb me. DOH

Biography

The neo-synth pop group Bastille were formed in London, England in 2010. Originally the solo project of singer/songwriter Dan Smith, Bastille expanded to a quartet after he decided to form a band and got some of his friends involved. The band attracted a lot of attention after putting a few tracks online, leading to support slots at major U.K. festivals like Glastonbury and the Isle of Wight. While their lush, heavily '80s-inspired melodies, anthemic choruses, and literate, emotionally raw lyrics, delivered in Smith’s swooping voice, undoubtedly appealed to kids weaned on the sounds of La Roux and Florence + the Machine, at least part of the hype was due to the flagrantly copyright-breaching videos that Smith, an ardent film buff, edited together out of footage from old movies like Terrence Malick’s Badlands. Eventually they secured a deal with hip indie label Young and Lost Club and released their debut 7” single, Flaws/Icarus, in July 2011. This was followed later that year by Laura Palmer EP, named for the teenaged murder victim in David Lynch’s cult '90s TV series Twin Peaks; the creepy accompanying video for the track “Overjoyed” was also heavily inspired by the series. The group returned in 2013 with their debut album Bad Blood. ~ John D. Buchanan, Rovi / iTunes

I really like this a lot, probably one of the best tracks on the album.
One of Bastille and Olly Murs has missed out then - as much as I like 'Right Place Right Time' I really hope it's Bastille who have held on to get a post-album top 40 hit (and deservedly outpeaking 'Laura Palmer').

So do I because I've written something for that but not Olly Murs

1. The Other Side

Biography

R&B vocalist Jason Derülo launched his career while still in his teens, first as a songwriter for other artists and later as a solo performer. Born to Haitian parents in Miramar, Florida, Derülo started singing at an early age. He attended performing arts schools in Florida and took some early stabs at music composition, writing his first song at the age of eight. His writing skills began attracting attention, and by his teenage years, Derülo had begun scribing tracks for artists like Lil Wayne, Pitbull, and Pleasure P. He also wrote "Bossy" for Birdman, a New Orleans-based rapper, and made a guest appearance on the song, which highlighted his ability as a vocalist.

After signing to a subsidiary of Warner Bros., Derülo began making the transition from behind-the-scenes songwriter to mainstream performer. His first hit arrived during the summer of 2009, when he wrapped a sample of Imogen Heap's "Hide and Seek" (a song made popular by its appearance in the second season finale of The O.C., as well as the Saturday Night Live sketch Dear Sister) around a sleek modern soul beat. Titled "Whatcha Say," the song topped the Billboard charts and cracked the Top Ten in multiple foreign countries, including Canada, Australia, Sweden, Switzerland, and the U.K. A second single, "In My Head," peaked at number five in America, and Derülo's full-length debut album arrived in early 2010. Future History followed in 2011, along with its hit single “Don't Wanna Go Home.” ~ Jason Thurston & Andrew Leahey, Rovi / iTunes

Chart history (Year peak title):

2009 03 Whatcha Say -1-

2010 01 In My Head -2-

2010 02 Ridin' Solo -3-

2010 12 What If -4-

2010 51 Coming Home (Pixie Lott Feat. Jason Derulo)

2010 68 The Sky's The Limit -5-

2011 01 Don't Wanna Go Home -1-

2011 04 It Girl -2-

2011 15 Fight For You -3-

2012 35 Breathing -4-

2013 02 The Other Side -1-

Not massively keen on this Bastille track on first listen, I wasn't of 'Pompeii' either and I think there's something grating about the vocals.

'The Other Side' still sounds fairly good, which is unusual as Derulo's tracks tend to sound dated pretty quickly.

Biography

While talent show juggernaut The X-Factor was previously more successful at creating female R&B superstars Leona Lewis and Alexandra Burke, the 2010 season of the series produced its first male winner to compete with the soft rock style of American Idols Kris Allen and David Cook in the shape of falsetto-voiced Matt Cardle. Born in Southampton, Hampshire in 1983, Cardle attended the same sixth form college as X-Factor host Dermot O'Leary and 2009 runner-up Olly Murs before taking on a host of jobs including bricklaying, painting, and decorating, while at the same time performing in various indie rock bands. In 2010, his group Seven Summers independently released their self-titled debut album, and in the same year he auditioned for the seventh season of Simon Cowell's hit show. Impressing judges with his rendition of Amy Winehouse's "You Know I'm No Good," he made it through to the live stages, where he was mentored by Dannii Minogue. His performances of tracks originally sung by female artists, including Kelly Rowland, Britney Spears, and Roberta Flack, helped him to reach the final, where he beat soul singer Rebecca Ferguson and boy band One Direction with 44 percent of the vote. His debut single, a cover version of Biffy Clyro's "Many of Honour," renamed "When We Collide," was a complete contrast to the Miley Cyrus track given to previous winner Joe McElderry, a clear indication he would receive more serious credible artist treatment than his male predecessors. The single took the Christmas number one spot, where it stayed for three weeks, and was nominated for Best British Single at the BRIT Awards. In 2011, Cardle released his debut full-length album Letters. In 2012 Cardle parted ways with Simon Cowell's hit factory Syco Music and label Columbia Records. This was a bold move, but allowed the rugged crooner far more creative control on his sophomore album The Fire, which came later that year. ~ Jon O'Brien, Rovi / iTunes

Discussion Thread Here

Finally caught up now. Slightly late YAY for Bastille getting that 3rd top 40 hit, knew it was a better single choice than 'Laura Palmer' and great to see that finally reflected by chart peaks after it looked like it might not be for a while.

And gwon Matt Cardle getting a second week top 40. Really thought he'd hold up better than this but I guess radio must have not picked it up properly.

Oh YES at Loving managing a second week! Shame it'll be gone next week.
'Loving You' got more of an introduction this week than it did last week.

It must have genuinely been a case of tying to cram the songs in before the top 10 starts at 6. This stupid video thing ruins the show for those of us who can't be arsed to do it.
