Biography

Although the first solo single from soul-inspired, London-born artist Sam Smith was issued in early 2013, it was his soaring vocal contribution to Disclosure's October 2012 U.K. garage track "Latch" which brought him to most people's attention. For most of his teens, Smith balanced study with music, soaking in the raw and passionate approach to performance exemplified by his favorite artists at that time such as Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, and Chaka Khan. "Latch" hit the upper reaches of the U.K. singles chart when Smith was 21, and many were surprised when his debut solo track took a more tempered path. The production on February 2013's "Lay Me Down" — also courtesy of the ordinarily dancefloor-focused duo Disclosure — recalled the stripped-back material that had proved successful for Adele in the preceding years. Next, Shahid Khan — aka Naughty Boy — decided to follow his Emeli Sandé-fronted U.K. Top Ten hit "Wonder" with the infectious, Bollywood sample-driven "La La La." Featuring Smith's powerful lead vocal, it became an instant May 2013 U.K. number one single following his spring tour in support of Sandé. - iTunes

Album Discussion Here

A great chart week for Dubliners :D. Hozier finally entering plus The Script getting another #1 album and remaining top 10 with their single (but mainly Hozier finally entering :cheer:)

EDIT: Actually I think Hozier is from Wicklow but whatever, I'm claiming him.

I'm sure most members' Irish geography isn't good enough to know how close Wicklow is to Dublin

'Coexist' by The xx :o

oh 2012 Britain you are wonderful

It's been ages since I last listened. Is there a particular reason why we're at no.6 already by 6:20? Is something special coming up?

Completely forgot that this went as high as number three last week! :o SO good, weird how his first two singles were a 5 for me but this is a solid 10!

'Coexist' by The xx :o

Did not expect that!

Still weirdly don't mind this Sam Smith song. I think it's the chord progression in the chorus that stands out.

Quite odd when your first 5 singles all chart higher than the one before. Just shows how Iggy's popularity has grown very steadily here in the UK.

I'm sure most members' Irish geography isn't good enough to know how close Wicklow is to Dublin

BE GONE, Sam Smith.

It's been ages since I last listened. Is there a particular reason why we're at no.6 already by 6:20? Is something special coming up?

Overly long interviews with Professor Green and Sigma.

Particularly as Hozier is from Bray :D

LOVE 'Black Widow' now! 'Booty' is just as hideous as the title would suggest, though. (Soz Regina)
