Irritated that Lorde and Martin Jensen will miss out on top 20 positions due to Ed, but what can you do. Lmao.

This is what really annoys me. Lorde could have had the good publicity of getting an instant hit with her comeback, but no, because of people streaming Ed's album she can only settle for top 40.

Yeah she should have been a top 20 but regardless it's WAAAAY more than I expected first week position wise for her lead single from the 2nd era. I had Lorde down as completely missing the chart so I guess we should be thankful it's at least top 40/30!. I know that's not a particularly good counter point tho

Astonishing impact from Ed though. Wow!

Glad that Alison Krauss is in the Top 10. She sang Gentle On My Mind on Andrew Marr yesterday morning and has a lovely voice.

Same here... it just pushes everything down, than most of the tracks go back up a week or two later, my main concern is how long those album tracks are going to clutter the singles chart.

Well in all fairness, Lorde is doing great even with the Ed songs around and if it holds up, it's on its way to becoming her second highest chart peak instantly. I don't think she'll be struggling due to Ed's album tracks :magic:

Lorde should be able to continue to climb though, not sure the same can be said of Lana unfortunately, hope she can in a week or two.

Fun little fact: Ed Sheeran's + will have been in the Top 10 in 2011 (#1), 2012 (#1), 2013 (#3), 2014 (#9), 2015 (#9) and 2017 by the end of the week.

Only reached a pathetic #50 in 2016 though. What a flop.

What an absolute joke, I only hope this makes the OCC make some immediate changes.

It's funny though, we had 2 to 4 new entries per week since whenever, and now out of nowhere we have 16 new entries.

this is why I think OCC will make a change. ^

they're a BIG company who still call it the 'singles' chart and have intentionally refrained from including airplay and radio in the charts, and were still reluctant to include streaming in the chart (over a year late compared to the US charts) at the time, obviously with the intention of keeping it a 'singles' chart - I highly doubt they'll let this continue considering a 105 minute show of the chart is broadcasted weekly and the UK music industry is one of the most highly regarded in the world.

it's all about £££ really, and the fact is that labels do still care about charts, as they're a reflection of popularity and money made. the OCC are in contact with all the major labels, and if they don't take it into their own hands to make a change to the chart rules, I'm sure a major label will intervene.

labels spend thousands of pounds promoting a song to give it a high finish in the SINGLES chart - and the inclusion of album tracks in the SINGLES chart is essentially making it a totally unfair playing field for every other artist that hasn't recently released an album. it's removing the element of the music industry being a fair game, which is obviously going to upset the major labels.

take Green Light by Lorde for example - Universal have paid probably a lot of money to have Green Light get a position on Hot Hits UK from the off and they might even have paid Radio 1 to insta-add the track to the A-List, when they see the charts on Friday and see that Lorde's position is n-12 to what it should have been any other week, they're not going to be happy considering the promotion money put into the track in order to get it to a high chart position / a position that reflect's its success.

in conclusion - the OCC have always intentionally kept the singles and albums charts as seperate entities, hence the seperate charts and former rules where only singles could count in the charts etc etc, so because of all the other points stated above and the fact that these massive labels dictating the music industry invest loads and loads of money in promotion for new singles - it's surely a foregone conclusion that they'll make a change... I mean surely that's a good enough reason for them to make a change to charts or else it'll totally defeat the object of a 'singles' chart..

What records will Ed break this week?

1. Most Top 10 hits simultaneously?

2. Most Top 10 hits from an album?

3. Most Top 20 hits simultaneously?

4. Most charting singles from an album? Etc., etc.,

Just to add, Ed Sheeran's album sold 68k yesterday, so its breakdown is as follows:

Day 1: 232k

Day 2: 132k (364k)

Day 3: 068k (432k)

Simply the OCC should disallow album tracks from charting unless they're singles.
Hopefully the Ed tracks will fall out quickly over the next couple of weeks. But I fear they'll clog the top 100 for the next year or so.
So Coldplay and Chainsmokers are the only ones who can prevent an entire Sheeran top ten? Thank god for Coldplay!
