I do agree with you on the marketing front though; who is funding Rita??? They can't be getting much return on their investment lol. Her presence seems to be pretty amazing in the US as well even though she's not had a hit since 2014 over there.

 

Rita makes a lot from her ‘name’ to be honest, outside her music she’s a big brand in herself so is paid loads to make apprearences places.

 

Plus, Rita Ora concert was at the O2 Academy, which is hardly a family-friendly venue. Little Mix are playing at arenas, which is a completely different ballgame and much more attractive for parents to take their kids. It's difficult to compare demographics when you consider that.

Honestly, HOW she gets this funding is one of the world's biggest mystery to me. She has an A-list P.R. game but she doesn't have the sales to back that up.

That's what I don't buy. That she's a "big brand in herself". Her social media numbers are nothing special (especially when you go beyond followers and check likes/RTs); her CD sales are really mediocre; she doesn't have big tours (except for a few arena dates in England); she never had a hit outside the UK..... I mean, her whole P.R. game is definitely based on the idea she is a huge brand but, when you look further, there's nothing to prove that in any metric, besides her omnipresence in TV/media. I mean, the marketing has been strong since day 1, when Jay-Z himself took her to Z100 (US biggest and most influential T40 radio) to introduce her as the world's next big thing. But she obviously hasn't delivered and she still is being promoted as if the investment is paying off.

 

And actually, no, I don't dislike her. I think her songs are good and, when I saw her live, I thought she had presence and talent. But yeah, I definitely do not buy her marketing. It's all entirely based on hype with very few results. If you live full time in the UK -- where she does get decent hits -- then she might seem like a really relevant popstar but, let's be real, she is not. Jess Glynne, who gets less promotion (not to say she isn't well promoted, she is, but nothing compared to Rita Ora) gets much better results overall.

Some top 10 hits in Australia and a #1 in Germany (when, as I said, Rita is literally the most over-promoted foreign act in Germany. She is literally in every single big award show in the country, despite having ONE top 10 hit. I mean, HOW?) is DEFINITELY far from having a "worldwide hit". "Shout Out To My Ex" was a top 10 in Australia and that's also obviously not a worldwide hit, is it?

 

I mean, "I Like" by Keri Hilson was a #1 in Germany due to a movie tie-in and Little Mix have several multi-platinum songs in Australia so I guess those songs can be classified as huge worldwide hits?

You're moving the goal posts? You stated she's never had a hit outside the UK, she evidently has. Hits outside of the UK ≠ "worldwide hit".

 

I think it'll be clear to pretty much everyone who bothers to read this discussion that you have a downer on Rita Ora. You obviously don't have to like her, but you don't have to be irrational in your dislike of her! She's a successful artist with a broad appeal.

 

I saw her in Birmingham this year, and the overwhelming majority of people in the audience were in their 20s and 30s, some even older. I'm 30 and the friend I went with was 30 at the time.

I'm 34 and would 100% see Rita Ora!! She is a big name and there are only a handful of successful female artists at the moment...she's doing great.

whats with the Rita hate? Of course she's not Madonna but she's not Nina Nesbitt either :) and why the Lmix comparison? it's like comparing cocacola and champagne, sure it depends of age and kids age 10 sure prefer colas :)

If this was September and Rita opening at #1 with 20k, we wouldn't have this discussion... Her debut was released in a very different sales climate coming from several #1's and has so far sold maybe 280-300k units so NO ONE should expect Rita opening with better numbers than these.

 

(The album having so many familiar songs is a big factor with streaming though)

I think the norm now for artists like these might be to release 6-7 singles before the album, release one more post-album and then re-release it with more singles.

 

Although I think Anne-Marie's and Rita's campaigns being derailed at some point before the album release may have played a part too.

I think there is a big difference between not having a worldwide hit and not being big in america 2 massive examples stream to mind kylie minogue and robbie williams

As already mention tour bundles etc olus its take that when have the ever failed to have a big opening first week no matter when they release <_<

Take That continued to be outsold by both The Greatest Showman soundtrack and Michael Bublé yesterday, and also (bizarrely) the 'lets add a Philharmonic Orchestra on to everything and make a quick sale' Buddy Holly album.

Take That are out of the running for the XMAS No1 album then, impressive sales nevertheless.
