There was a time when it could be assumed that a statement from a government minister or department was at least broadly true and certainly not a blatant lie. That meant the the BBC and other broadcasters could justify their practice of quoting them without question or much of a challenge. That isn't true any more but the BBC are still acting as if it is. It doesn't help that they know that any challenge will be held up as an example of "BBC bias" rather than an example of journalists doing their job.

From Sky News.

Michael Gove warned the EU today that a trade deal was off without ‘fundamental change’ in its bargaining position – as Michael Barnier signalled that talks could be restarted.

‘We’d hoped to conclude a Canada-style FTA before the transition ends. As things stand that will not now happen,’ he told MPs.

‘We remain absolutely committed..but there does need to be a fundamental change in approach from the EU if the process is to get back on track.’

But even as Mr Gove was on his feet, EU chief negotiator Michel Barnier tweeted that he had met UK counterpart Lord Frost and said ‘the EU remains available to intensify talks in London this week, on all subjects, and based on legal texts’ and was awaiting reaction from London.

Downing Street had earlier warning it was now or never for a post-Brexit trade deal today as Boris Johnson put UK firms on red alert for a hard split from Brussels at the end of the year.

Amid fears of a collapse in talks aimed at securing a free trade agreement, officials said that the UK would not return to the bargaining table in 2021 if the transition period ends on December 31 without a compromise.

Why do they always use Canada and Australia as examples of a FTA why not Somalia or Afghanistan? Doesn’t sound as nice does it?

Shortage of poultry workers could ruin Christmas dinner

From BBC News

Christmas dinner could be ruined this year as supplies of traditional turkeys could run out, an industry body says.

The problem is a shortage of skilled workers to process the meat, according to the British Poultry Council (BPC).

It said 1,000 EU workers were needed to stop Christmas supply from collapsing, and urged the government to exempt them from quarantine rules.

"The great British Christmas cannot survive without access to non-UK labour," said boss Richard Griffiths.

He said there is a dearth of UK workers with the right training and qualifications to slaughter and process the nine million turkeys reared for Christmas.

"Turkey producers are heavily reliant on licensed and trained EU workers with specific farming, processing, and butchery skills.

"These skills cannot be replaced without a lengthy training and recruitment period."

Are you concerned about this, Chris?

Economic turmoil? Idc

Annialating your closest trading partner? Idc

Sending hundreds of thousands lifes into a mess? Idc

They'll just have to have beef or lamb this year. I prefer it anyway. Turkeys are overrated and anyway you can buy sliced turkey breast in all supermarkets as I get it reduced for the dog when it's on it's sell by date. :)

Off topic but is it true that the UKIP candidate for London mayor is Phillip Gammons? 😂

Yes, you are right. :D

So apparently anything above WTO terms is classified as a Brexit win, even if it is the same as we would get under our current deal.

And this blatantly political message will have been sent by a supposedly neutral civil servant, aka an unelected bureaucrat.

Best thing is, most of the Soy sauce in the UK comes in via the EU so it'll be stuck in the border chaos and will get more expensive (EU has a 0% deal with Japan) because of the additional costs of getting it from the EU to the UK.
