May 14, 20214 yr Got my second jab next Friday, 21st. Wife's got hers on Sunday. Heard horror stories of people having awful side effects with the second one when they had none, just like us, with the first. I've got my second dose booked for Thursday. Twenty-four hours on from the second dose and no significant side-effects. Looks like I'm one of the lucky ones.
May 15, 20214 yr I'm slightly concerned that with the Indian variant and the talk of local lockdowns again that this is gonna end up in a similar situation toward the end of last year and that ultimately we end up in another full blown lockdown. I know we have the vaccines on our side this time but there is still almost the whole of the under 40's to be vaccinated so what happens now?

I know we have the vaccines on our side this time but there is still almost the whole of the under 40's to be vaccinated so what happens now? I wouldn't worry about it too much right now, way too many unknowns. I suspect June 21st will get pushed back a few weeks and it will be a race against time. Imo I think the bigger concern is some of the pockets where there is high infection rates with the Indian variant are areas where there is lower vaccine takeup among the vulnerable groups. I could definitely see some local lockdowns in the future but if they don't do them now then it's gonna be too late in the future, because come Monday it will spread like wildfire.
May 15, 20214 yr I cannot see us going back into lockdown, even with the rise on cases. The populations with the highest risk of death and long-term complications have now been vaccinated, with those in the younger categories less likely to have complications leading to the overwhelming of the health service, and with the way the rollout is going those in the younger categories will be vaccinated soon enough anyway.
May 15, 20214 yr I don’t think we know enough about it to say what will happen yet. The speculation is that it’s more transmissible, not more deadly, and with the majority if the vulnerable vaccinated, its probable the NHS will not be overwhelmed which is the reason for lockdowns. It’s bonkers that if it’s that bad, we’re still lifting restrictions on Monday so either they’re playing it up so that people remain careful or they’re just really incompetent. It’s honestly impossible to say which. I do hope that I actually get my half term holiday in two weeks without going into some local lockdown. I’ve been in pretty much full lockdowns for all of my holidays since August and I’d like to enjoy myself. Plus with the absolute fiasco that is the exams this year, I’m feeling really burnt out.

Bolton NHS is saying that most recent hospital admissions in Bolton were unvaccinated people who were eligible for it. As long as everyone takes up their jab in the over 50 group (and hopefully that will be an encouragement in other areas with low uptake), we *should* be able to avoid another full lockdown but can certainly see the main unlocking in June being delayed by a weeks.
May 15, 20214 yr People in Glasgow are not happy with these latest set of restrictions come in after already literally 9 months of no household mixing allowed. We've heard "one more week" before. I think to do this so late is irresponsible of ScotGov with no warning.
May 15, 20214 yr And if she hadn’t locked down Glasgow you’d be whinging about her not locking down Glasgow when cases have taken a sudden sharp turn upwards. Glasgow looked ok a week ago, now it looks like ground zero. The virus moved fast and so must the gov. Actually I was quite pleased to see her take the step to keep Glasgow in tier 3 just a lil bit longer to try to arrest the spread. The UK went back on Germany’s risk list over concerns about the variant running unchecked. (Two reasons. It’s currently 2% of cases here and we want it to stay that way. Plus we’re sitting at 34% 1 jagged, 10% 2 jagged so don’t quite have the same level of protection yet.)

May 15, 20214 yr @1393271922595667971 Very interesting thread on the rise of the Indian variant in the UK
May 15, 20214 yr Some good news regarding the vaccines: Covid vaccines have saved 11,700 lives and 33,000 hospital admissions Coronavirus vaccines have saved 11,700 lives and stopped 33,000 people becoming seriously ill with Covid-19 in England, research suggests. The Public Health England analysis, up to the end of April, found people in their 70s and 80s had seen the biggest fall in deaths and hospital admissions. May 15, 20214 yr That’s brilliant news. But try telling that to the so called freedom protesters who are out in London and Manchester today protesting

Remember last December? Everywhere went down restriction wise and exactly a week later everyone was in level 4! My family stay in Stranraer (sw Scotland) and they went from level 2 - level 1 - level 4 in the space of two weeks and I think that happened in quite a few places. (Mind you only for everyone to be allowed to mix for Christmas two weeks later!!) 🤷🏻♂️ I still believe that was the wrong decision by the whole of the UK government. As harsh as that sounds, that's a massive part of why we ended up back under restrictions for so long and of course everyone was mad at the government for being under restrictions until April instead of accepting that they were given a day to be with family, that came with a price (obviously.) Anyway, my point was that she won't be able to win either way. If she didn't keep restrictions in Glasgow there would be people moaning about it and asking why, same for the fact the she has kept restrictions at the same level now, there are people asking why! I did see a local Facebook news page advising everyone from my area to stay away from Glasgow 🙏

I did see a local Facebook news page advising everyone from my area to stay away from Glasgow 🙏 I wouldn't worry too much, levels of infection last December were about 10,000-15,000 per day and we have little to antibodies in the general population. Currently cases are at about 2,000-2,5000 a day (of course with both figures they are probably 20-30% higher) and we have 50% of the population with antibodies. The infections can go up, it's whether it translates in to hospital admissions. I think the big problem is we have a lot of people who are unvaccinated who are classed as vulnerable. Part of me suspects it's being usedas a tactic to encourage people to get the vaccine. The Indian variant is going to find it's way across the world again. I think the bigger problem is India in itself, seems loads of people are faking covid certificates and there are still commercial flights- absolute madness.
May 15, 20214 yr Perhaps the tier system will come back soon in England. Also I don't think this Indian variant will be the last variant of concern to enter the UK this year through international travel. Edited May 15, 20214 yr by sn👠ke
May 15, 20214 yr Hope the Tier system doesn’t come back as all it does is encourages confusion and resentment plus people to move to lower tiered areas. Only if there is a significant highly localised outbreak would it be worth it. Edited May 15, 20214 yr by Smint
May 16, 20214 yr I think the government should be opening up vaccination to all 18-38 year olds and stop going down the line by age group. The quicker you vaccinate, the less likely the indian variant will spread. Rather than sitting on stockpiles of vaccines waiting to be used.
