January 4, 20223 yr Author From JBM's most recent thread: ( ) Although it does look quite worrying in terms of stresses on certain hospitals, especially in the NW of England on the latest data with a blisteringly high 37.5% positivity rate and COVID hospitalisations closing in on the April 2020 peak already (2618 v 3065). However, as seen in the evidence from where the Omicron varient was first identified, it appears that inherent immunity (via previous infection or vaccination) has weakened the severity of the virus and although still potentially harmful or even deadly to the unvaccinated, it is a lot less concerning now given the advances we have in treatments etc.
January 4, 20223 yr Yeah it’s looking like the bigger problem isn’t Omricon filling the hospitals, rather Omricon emptying them of staff and reducing capacity that way rather than by actual bed usage
January 5, 20223 yr To anyone that has Covid/has ever had Covid did you feel coldness inside your body? when my symptoms started that was something that I felt and I was drinking several cups of boiled water but the coldness didn't go away at all like it normally would whenever I feel like that.
January 5, 20223 yr Any additional measures issued now would surely help to limit any future spread of this highly contagious virus, protect vulnerable people and the NHS which is at risk of being unable to function properly. I’m not talking about a full lockdown but doing nothing will only lead to a longer more protracted period of higher infections but Johnson appears more concerned about the economy and upsetting the Apple kart within his own party. From everything that I have read, the time to put restrictions in was 10 days ago, judging from London the UK is not likely already at the peak or about to hit the peak. A lot of our problems seem to be coming predominately from the unvaccinated. Not sure I agree with Johnson's strategy of letting it come all at once and trying to ride the wave, but looks like most other countries are going for something similar now, albeit trying to control it rather than just heading face first like we are.
January 5, 20223 yr Well I fully expected them to announce a lockdown so kudos for them for not doing so. If lockdowns are still the answer 2 years later then there really is no hope of ever beating it.

If lockdowns are still the answer 2 years later then there really is no hope of ever beating it. I agree a full lockdown isn’t the answer but neither is allowing hospitals to become so overwhelmed at a time when the NHS is also being impacted by high levels of staff sickness caused by covid. Johnson was on TV tonight bragging about the U.K. being one of only a few countries keeping their economy fully open but I’m sure all the relatives of patients awaiting urgent operations which have been delayed several times now due to the crisis in hospitals will be pleased to hear that. A large proportion of the workforce being off sick is also hardly the recipe for a thriving economy. Edited January 6, 20223 yr by slowdown73
January 6, 20223 yr So we had the first of 2 ‘planning’ days working from home before term properly starts today and we had a health and safety briefing to inform us that........absolutely nothing is changing from the way we were doing things before Christmas. All these air monitors we were promised last Summer still have not even arrived in school. It makes all the fuss made in the holidays pretty pointless. However, this does mean I will get Covid this term. Pray for me.
January 7, 20223 yr So we had the first of 2 ‘planning’ days working from home before term properly starts today and we had a health and safety briefing to inform us that........absolutely nothing is changing from the way we were doing things before Christmas. All these air monitors we were promised last Summer still have not even arrived in school. It makes all the fuss made in the holidays pretty pointless. However, this does mean I will get Covid this term. Pray for me. Can I ask…firstly are you vaccinated and have you had your booster? I teach on a part time basis and like you I am also concerned about catching covid at the minute. I think there are a few steps you can put in place to try and protect yourself. I’ve told students that as I have underlying health issues, I am asking them to keep a social distance and wear a face mask if they need to speak to me in private or come to my table. In addition, I carry antibacterial wipes and handwash around with me and use these regularly. I would also ensure you keep a window open in the room where you are teaching to provide some ventilation.
January 7, 20223 yr I’m am vaccinated and boosted. The students will all be wearing masks as will I and I will try to keep as much distance as possible but I just don’t believe it’s going to be enough. I’m hoping I won’t get Covid too bad given my vaccination status but I am resigned to the fact that I will get it now.
January 7, 20223 yr I was speaking with my boss yesterday and we both are of the opinion now that Omricon is just so infectious that everyone will at some point get it. Regardless of how many precautions you take, this is a slippery f*** and it will come through for you sadly All you can do is ensure you vax and be as covid smart as you can

Regardless of how many precautions you take, this is a slippery f*** and it will come through for you sadly All you can do is ensure you vax and be as covid smart as you can Yup it's so prevalent if you have any contact with others you'll probably get it at some point. It might be milder than previous strains but it's still pretty horrid. I'm also hearing more and more vaccinated people saying theyve caught this than any previous wave. Even with vaccinations this has floored me, I'm really not surprised unvaccinated people are getting hospitalized from it.
January 7, 20223 yr Problem with Omicrom is that it has a high reinfection rate so you can get it many times a year. Even if it is mild, the work sickness rate will go through the roof. Unless it gets progressively milder with each reinfection.
January 7, 20223 yr I definitely don't want this virus again so it is really worrying how infectious it is now. I'm on day 6 today and only just feeling more human but my taste and smell are still gone. The lethargy, aches and tight chest were absolutely awful for a few days.

I’m hoping I won’t get Covid too bad given my vaccination status but I am resigned to the fact that I will get it now. I do agree with you tbh. Given the virus is highly transmittable, even with the measures there is still a high risk of catching it but unless this shambolic government decides an alternative approach then all you can do is try and protect yourself as much as possible. I do feel very uncomfortable teaching face to face in a large group right now. The minister for wales has made some very valuable points today in relation to the lack of restrictions in England. January 7, 20223 yr One lightly humorous thing to have come out of today is a battle between the Government of Wales and Chester FC over covid rules. Chester being an English club in an English city have followed English rules but Wales is now investigating them for breeches of Welsh covid rules because while the entrance to the Deva stadium complex, it’s carpark and all the club offices are in England, the Pitch and Stands are in Wales!! (Saw someone ask if the stadium - which is owned by the city of Chester - was suddenly now considered Welsh, where were the covid cheques the Welsh gov had been giving other football clubs in Wales like the nearby Wrexham who 110% have gone crying to the North Wales police) Germany has tightened the rules lightly from an unknown start date it will be required to provide 2G+ proof for gastronomy nationwide (2G and negative test or 2G and booster vaccine) as this sector is now deemed to be the major risk sector in the current wave. Some in the gov (greens) wanted to close them down but 2G+ was seen as Minimum required for them to stay open
January 7, 20223 yr 2G? Geimpft & Genesen „Vaccinated and Recovered“ Taking advantage of most past participles in German starting with the „Ge-“ prefix. The missing G is getested (no translation needed here  ) which means no unvaxxed folks unless they had covid in the last 3 months. It’s become an easy shorthand to know the level of restrictions in place by quoting how many Gs are allowed  (it’s 2 everywhere apart from public transport (3) and essential shops who are exempt from the Gs system)
January 8, 20223 yr Scientists in Cyprus have discovered a new strain of Covid which has features of both the Delta variant and the Omicron variant. They’re calling it Deltacron.
