They, again, seem to be moving too fast and ignoring scientific advice which I shouldn't be surprised with at this point. I agree with Jack's points, especially about masks. They should at least wait until almost everyone is vaccinated before they get rid of them entirely. If it doesn't increase hospitalisations and cases remain controlled then I'll eat my words, but I feel cases still aren't quite low enough to feel confident about these.

I personally don't think them 'officially' dropping masks will make a difference. Seems most people already have made their minds up about wearing them or not around London at least. After July 19th everyone who is still wearing them now will likely continue to do so and vice versa. It's not like that's the date the virus suddenly becomes less transmissible is it.
I'm not sure about that, at least from my own experience, I know in the days before they became mandatory on tubes/shops last year, I think I saw about 5% wearing them if that. Whether it will make a difference remains to be seen, but I'm expecting uptake to be very low.
I do see the understanding in 'living with covid' though... it has gone on long enough and although i think certain measures should stay in play... 95% of rules are forgotten / ignored in most pubs in London after 7pm in my experience.

London is an anomoly though to a lot of the country, especially as the age skews younger too. Mask compliance is pretty high although I have begun to notice a lot more of the yellow sunshine lanyards popping up..

Think there are two schools of thoughts here, one is that businesses and real estate owners etc. are happy because people can crowd back in to resturaunts and pubs etc. but then there are lots of people who are more vulnerable that are less likely to go out in the short term because the chances of catching covid are going to be high over the summer. I totally agree with the fact people that we need to learn to live with it and delaying means we risk a peak in the autumn rather than the summer - which is what will happen in Europe.

Guess we will see, my best guess is mask wearing will become legally enforced again by the end of the summer for public transport and crowded places for the rest of the year

How many people will die because Boris need his ego massaged by people liking him? Floppy haired useless braindead c**t.

There’s a 0% chance I’m going anywhere near England anytime soon and by extension home to Scotland. Some dumb shit going on and everyone been hitting the dumbf*** juice haaaaaard. Like I’m not saying let’s not reopen stuff but let’s not throw absolutely everything out the window. That’s just stupidity. We’ve lost 16 months of our lives and here’s England being like “ok back to Heard-immunity strategy it is, f*** the number of dead”. What was the point in all of this last 16 months of you’re gonna be like nah f*** it. Let it go to hell And let’s create the prefect breeding ground for a vaccine resistant variant.

Jesus f*** man.

From what I have seen, Johnson has more or less admitted that some restrictions will need to be reintroduced over the winter. In other words, when he said that each step away from restrictions was irreversible, he actually meant reversible. Is anyone surprised?

My worry is that the anti vax idiot brigade will start to castigate mask wearers in public - I wouldn't put it past them. And this stuff about how expect people to use common sense and think of others on busy tubes etc - well it only takes a few mask abstainers to spread the disease as a mask is mainly to stop the spreading to others rather than getting it yourself.

Only silver lining may be a drop in the Tory lead as Starmer seems to be against getting rid of masks on public transport.

#ItsOver is trending high on Twitter at the moment. Says it all about the mentality of a lot of people just because Boris says it's alright to come out and play. Wasn't it around this time last year as well that he was spouting similar things and look what happened by the end of the year.
I think if people want to wear masks of their own accord after the point it's required, then that's fair enough - but the idea of having these things forced upon us as a mandatory requirement forever (like a Sage scientist suggested the other week) fills me with revulsion.

I’m in Weeyals so no idea what’s happening with us but we’ll surely be a few weeks behind England. I think masks should definitely stay on public transport at the very least. I’d keep them going in shops too but, like Jupiter said, relax it for shop workers when they’re behind screens.

Schools is the things I most want to be back to normal though. I guess there’s 6 weeks to see how things go but it’s one of the worst places to have restrictions.

Boris is right. It's high time now that all restrictions were lifted. We've had restrictions for 15 months. People are fed up and want big summer barbecues. We're having one for Rachel's friends on 24th now, about a dozen coming.

The infection and death rate is so low now. Even supermarkets don't seem bothered about masks any more. Well the ones I've been to lately have left it up to you whether to wear one or not.

The death rate is low now, but it will shoot up. Could easily be in a case where we have 100k infections per day again. Ministers have just gone for a 'f*** it' approach - I think there should be a balancing act personally as we don't know how much we need to get to herd immunity, but over summer we are going for herd immunity to get us through the winter months. So anyone who is unvaccinated is a sitting duck, especially if they are vulnerable.

It's high time that Boris is out of 10 Downing Street more like.

I def think they should be mandatory in public transport and other indoor crowded places. It’s a bit like getting in a car now - I would feel pretty weird not wearing a seatbelt automatically. That’s not being dictated too it’s fairly common sense approach to protecting yourself and others. Similar to not smoking in a pub.

With less customers wearing masks though, even double-vaccined elderly and immuno-compromised people may be more at risk when they go to the supermarket or use public transport, even if they are wearing masks themselves. Especially with the Delta Plus variant about now.

Scotland seem to be likely to do same on 9th August but keep enforcing masks to be worn
Lifting all covid restrictions on the 19th of July is absolutely reckless. Firstly, cases are increasing significantly along with hospital admissions rising considerably in some areas and there is still a large section of the population (mainly younger people) who are not fully vaccinated. Yes, death rates are low but while covid cases are high, this significantly increases the risks of a more dangeroys variant of the virus emerging and if this happens, then further restrictions will be needed in the future. I will continue to wear a mask in supermarkets and shops but by making it a ‘personal choice’, the government are effectively trying to deny any responsibility if it all goes wrong and will blame the public. It also gives out a very confusing and mixed message to the public!

Just your opinion. As Sajid Javid said at the weekend, we have to now learn to live with Covid like we do the flu. Businesses like night clubs, theatres etc, can't go on being closed forever or only being a third full. They won't ever re-open. Social distancing is to end completely on 19th in pubs and also schools but Boris thinks that'll be in the new term in Sept.

Apprantely there is a Lambada variant now, so people will be doing the Lamabda if Boris Johnson has his way.
