We’ll see if there’s big drop between Jury and Public Vote as there was with Lucie (and Joe & Jake come to that). I don’t think a UK act has significantly outperformed on the Public Vote compared to the Jury apart from Blue.

It’s relatively contemporary and not out of place on a radio1 playlist but it’s verging into “nice” rather than exciting? I think the staging will need to do a lot of heavy lifting to get this out of the bottom five especially given this year is offering a lot of bangers north of 110BPM.

It may be a funky house song but its only about a 6/10 for me.

It doesn't sound like it would be a chart hit if it wasn't Eurovision I mean its quite cheesy and obviously Eurovision. It sounds more Radio 2 than Radio 1.

If I was to compare it to other songs, it's a bit like Calling All Hearts by DJ Cassidy from 2013 with a Kungs-esque drop.

I don't agree. Leaving aside the fact that the UK entry hasn't been a chart hit for ages, I think Embers sounds like the sort of song that could be a hit without Eurovision. If it is a UK hit but performs modestly in May, it could at least help to end the idea that entering Eurovision ends any hope of further chart success in the UK. It could be a stepping stone towards some bigger names being willing to go for it.

This song sounds pretty decent on first listen. The main thing I dislike about it is the same thing I disliked about his first entry (his voice.)

Exactly this!

And if this results in more artists/songs that are representative of popular hits in the UK/Europe being entered, that can only be a good thing. (And Will, in turn, lead to better results...)

I know they're hits due to TikTok... But Think About Things and Arcade becoming belated hits, shows that Eurovision isn't quite the career killer that it's painted out to be in the UK...

Not here for this at all - probably one of the only UK Eurovision songs I haven’t got behind (I’d even take ElectroVelvet over this), sounds like a 2002 X-Factor 9th place contestants b-side to their 3rd single and will be placed accordingly at the very bottom of the scoreboard.

So I just heard this and I don’t hate it and I’m very confused. This is not what I was expecting at all and I’m kinda into it
When I blasted the official album in the car on a sunny day this did really stand out. I do hope it's not another bottom five for the UK, in this case it would be completely undeserved.
I hope he pulls it off to avoid bottom 5, but a part of me thinks he is going to be like an awkward guest vocalist at the Capital Sunmertime / Jingle Bell Balls on stage.

2/10 for me. Great voice but the song doesn't go anywhere, and for me is horribly mediocre and forgettable. Last year was a better song.
I'm kinda of the same opinion it just goes nowhere and on the preview on semi 2 I just felt he looked out of place on stage.
This is such a bop, I didn't watch the contest but heard this song a couple of times over the last week and it is great. It definitely didn't deserve 0 points, Brexit has really got us f***ed

I don't think it was anything to do with Brexit, it was just a very weak performance in a very strong field.

Unless it's got a novelty element (Moldova 2017), male led dance tracks ALWAYS bomb at Eurovision. If Darude and Gromee can't get out of a semi final, then why would James have scored anything in the final this year?

In a football tournament, like the World Cup, if England were to not score a single goal and get knocked out in the early stages, there would uproar, and the Manager would be held accountable and fired - so I'm hoping that the fools at the BBC who decided on this song, artist and performance, are fired and moved on - they are not fit for purpose.

The song, the performance, and the artist were deserving of last place, it was bloody awful, dire in fact (and the worst performance for the UK since 2003), and the second back-to-back year we came last.

So who were the people responsible for this fiasco, and how can we make sure for 2022 they don't have decision-making responsibilities for next year? We need a new team, and a new start otherwise what's the point?

Regardless of the performance and vocal, I still think this is a really solid radio commercial dance song.

It probably would have done a little better fronted by a female singer, like Becky Hill or Ella Eyre, or even his brother as James isn't as natural a performer, but actually commercial dance pretty much never does well at Eurovision. The other closest example, Omaga (which admittedly is more commercial in a 2008 Calvin Harris style) tanked with zero in the televote too in its semi.

Dance music has always been one of those genres that just doesn't translate particularly well live. Back in the days of Top of the Pops it mostly looked awkward, Darude and Gromee's performances both looked super awkward and went nowhere.

I don't think it's all the fault of the song, as I think as a radio song it's completely good enough - but that's probably it.
