but releasing multiple formats of a release vs dropping the price midweek are very different tactics and not comparable at all

releasing multiple vinyls and cassettes, thats a good marketing strategy and thats what collector want, the label is just giving the people what they want, so release as many format as they want the label gives people choices, that's it, no one has to buy the 13 vinyls,... for me, thats good marketing

dropping the price of an album in half midweek on the other hand is pure desperation and an insult to most fans that have faithfully bought the album on release date at full price... so not the same thing, kinda the opposite...

Unfortunately though that seems to be part of labels marketing - I mean you could pick up Olivia’s album for £4.99 by week 2.

Looking at some #1’s in recent times The Snuts, Dua Lipa, 5SOS, The 1975, Yungblud, You Me At Six, The Vamps etc., have all reduced to half price in the first week and it seems the norm rather than the exception because regardless of if an act is fighting for a #1, Top 10, Top 20 etc., a price reduction is always their tactic.

iTunes downloads are the same and it’s basically a 59p chart and now that we are seeing more and more physical singles selling for £2 and under I think that will be another new avenue labels go down.

There are levels of desperation, I can't think of anybody who has done something quite as desperate as signed 99p CD singles. There's no getting around that.

Like I said, I would label ANYBODY desperate for doing that.

Looks like Ed has learnt a thing or two from Lewis Capaldi then :D
oh my God!!!! what input is Ed gonna give, his mysogenistic lyrics sung from a perspective of a 13 year old even when he's 30? :D
Urrrgh, mediocrity will win this week.

Not that that would be the case whichever way the Top 2 fall or anything. :kink: :kink:

Of course if England beat Germany tonight, Three Lions will instantly hit 10 million streams and make it to #1

Labels can also make strategies where they don't lose money

Jack Savoretti has released some personally signed copies of the cd and vinyl, but that's at full price so 27 pounds for the vinyl

not cheap but sure it will help with sales without being desperate

There are only 5000 copies of Ed's CD single though I believe. They could've easily flogged more at 99p, so it can't just be desperation to get a #1.

The signed ones are already sold out.

Nearly every artist has done that via Banquet Records (I have ones from Wolf Alice, Rag & Bone Man, The Vamps, You Me At Six, Yungblud, Dermot Kennedy, Sea Girls, Declan McKenna, Tom Grennan & Jessie Ware) - it’s a great add on and sometimes used last minute to boost sales.

LOL i'm here for Three Lions been the Year End #1 after England win the Euros! :P

Lewis Capaldi done signed ones for £1 with 3 different sleeves, Dermot Kennedy done signed ones for £1.99 with free delivery..

Limiting numbers increases their collectibility though. It's better to have 5000 guaranteed sales than any number of possible sales when you might be looking at a tight race.

I think YouTube will be making a big difference in Doja Cats favour. It’s already on 19M world wide, where as Our Song has just hit 20M

Ed is officially 99p in hmv too which is much better (down from 2.99)
