I don't blame those players missing the shootout. I blamed Southgate on this. This is clearly on him.

What was all that fancy footwork by Rashford all about? And Sancho took a really short run up.

 

Gutted for England. They were so close. Onwards to the World Cup now, it's only one and half years away.

Amen. I am the furthest thing from a "flag shagger" or a raging nationalist. I think the way some(see SOME) of the England fans as well as England politically in the few years is atrocious...but some of the quips and taunts from ALL sides I've seen in the last few days are in very bad taste.

Seen enough football games, witnessened cup final defeats in Wembley, play-off final defeats at Wembley, penalties are so cruel but it's an amazing feeling when you win one. Nothing worse than going home from Wembley after a defeat too! Well done Italy - some truly dreadful penalties from England. Don't know why players do the shuffle, just smash the ball for gods sake.

Great performance for England - from a wonderful team and manager of true role models for our society. So so proud of them continuing with ''the knee' anti racism stance despite terrible opposition from the right wing in society including our Home Secretary (openly) and our PM (in a cowardly way through a spokesman).

I apologise for my comment I got a bit carried away. Just from us Scots point of view it’s not about actually hating England, it’s the English media and the arrogance! It’s always ‘we’ every time they are talking about England, it’s meant to be British friendly not just England. Especially Rio Ferdinand, he’s just so cocky. Commiserations to England though, they were extremely unlucky and just fell at the last hurdle.

Strange choice on pen takers for me the fringe players brought on to take pens generally miss, just not central enough to the team. Especially giving a 19 yo the final pen, strange choice!!

As if he hasn’t been carrying that kind of blame for 25 years already. Whatever the result, Southgate has been amazing for England and though they haven’t won, he and the team are the role models that England so desperately need.

A disappointing ending but really can't say Italy didn't deserve it (both on the night and throughout the whole tournament), no shame in the loss and 2nd place is still a result to be proud of. Positive energy only xx

Agree with Smint entirely, even down to the better team winning part. Italy definitely had the most chances and it's less heartbreaking to lose on penalties when the team didn't definitely deserve to win on the day.

Do also agree with this. British radio/tv has been irritating this last few weeks for that.
