No. :D- well certainly in terms of 200k openings.

100k+ openings are slightly more frequent

Madonna (Like A Prayer, Erotica, Ray Of Light, Music, confessions)- the latter was over 200k but I've included it in the run anyway

Leona Lewis (Spirit, Echo)

Susan Boyle (I Dreamed A Dream, The Gift)

Thanks for that! Didn’t realise Erotica opened on such high sales!

Cheryl as well I think can be on the list there too wit her first two albums when she was seen as the Peoples Princess been a long while though since we’ve seen album sales like Adele’s this week makes me happy and even more so when it’s an album I’ve actually purchased.

Adele’s totally just in a league of her own though. Was actually surprised at 21s sales in week one when I looked at them always assumed it was a massive album but more of a slow burner maybe that’s the US where that was the case. Also crazy to think no female albums had a 100k week since Adele’s very own 25!

^ apart from noted girlgroup ABBA a couple of weeks ago of course xx

'21' actually didn't even peak in its first week, it spiked all the way up to 258k in its 10th week for reasons I do not immediately recall. And sold 100k+ in every single one of the weeks leading up to that, plus another two weeks after that which is completely unimaginable now.

I thought your suggestions were really good! :)

Haha, thanks! Crazy long post for me..., 🙈

What about her first album 19, what was the first week UK sales for that?

It was Mother's Day effect I think

EDIT; Found it on MW:

With Mother’s Day gift-buying helping to boost album sales, the runaway chart champion, for the 10th week in a row, is Adele’s 21.

It is the first album ever to sell more than 100,000 copies for 10 weeks in a row, 21 scorched to 257,731 sales last week – its best weekly tally yet, easily besting the 208,090 copies it sold on its debut week - to raise its 69 day tally to 1,754,319.

Fingers crossed Fairytale of New York will hang on
I think it will definitely beat the 258k weekly peak of 21. If I had to bet on a figure right now i'd say 275k.

Opened on sales of 73,341 in 2008. Overall it sold a lot more in 2011 though :)

Also looking at previous comments 21 was so gigantic from the off! I don’t know why In my head I thought it performed in a similar way to Back to Black initially  hopefully 30 can at least get two weeks on 100k! I think it’s possible that the album may have a boost during Christmas week (but similarly I feel Ed and ABBA may also get higher sales that week too) but with Adele quite a bit ahead.

Erotica is the one i'm most surprised about as well tbh, I didn't think of it as a flop era or anything just didn't realise its opening sales were that big. Like A Prayer was obviously huge and the latter three came in an era of huge album sales.

So that's three more albums to beat Madonna for Adele on that score I guess, although by the time she gets to album 7 we will probably be at a stage where 10k for a #1 album is impressive lmao.

As far as I remember 21 was indeed huge from the word go but I think it was raised to another level after her performance of Someone Like You from the Brits. I think that was the moment it was catapulted from "very successful album" to "biggest thing of the decade" and really the moment Adele became this in a league of her own kind of star.

That performance was actually very early in the campaign, three weeks after 21 was released.

It would be a nice start to the chart tomorrow if it’s between 35-40, and it’ll make me feel very Christmassy as we go into the first kind of Christmas weekend of the season (Christmas party wise)!

Agree with the hindsight comments.

In no way is this (or Abba, or Ed) and underperformance it's just the way the albums market is now.

I think the only way we'll see healthy figures regularly for albums is if the streaming figures are tweaked.

I would still say the Ed album was an underperformance even with this context though considering it had a pretty drastic dropoff in streaming compared to his previous releases. I reckon if the album had connected more 200k should still have been achievable for him.
So around 280,000 units first week? Hardly bad, maybe just a tad bit underwhelming.
^more like 250K I fear

It does amuse me the "underwhelming" comments, yeah okay, there was a great belief she definitely has the reach to have got sales just a little bit higher.

But here's the reality, soak it in people, we aren't going to get a sales week like this again for most likely, a good few years (unless something changes).

There is very VERY few artists out there right now that even have potential for a week like this. Ed was one of them and he did much less in comparison.
