Surprised Ed overtook Adele. Although it makes sense if he added "Merry Christmas" and discounted all versions last week.

Hopefully Adele will be able to reclaim the #1 spot next week.

But will be downweighted to the average of the 3rd to 12th most streamed songs so won't really be making any difference

Adding MC made a 3.6k difference (since "Bad Habits" streams weren't weighed down and it being #3 song also increased average for songs 3-12 therefore increasing streaming units for songs #1-2). He really mastered the charts manipulation.

This turned out to be a great chart in the end with Ed doing the double. He also spent over a 3rd of the year at #1 on the singles chart. That Ed reign just wont let up, keep your foot on their throats king!

“All I Want For Christmas Is You” has now overtaken “Dance Monkey” to become the longest-running song by a female artist in the UK (115 weeks).

I did love checking the ‘chart weeks’ in the chart today!

It’s hardly manipulation, the fact is Adele didn’t sell as much!

Thanks all for joining, thank god there weren't any hiccups this week lol...!!! Happy New Year to you all!

Happy new year and thanks for all the hard work on the thread all year!

Actually Adele did sell more (physical albums) but lacked in the "imaginary album" sales.

As a chart geek I can only admire Ed for caring about the chart and playing the game well. Adding Merry Christmas to his album was clearly a master stroke!

The conspiracy theorists are out again!

Just accept that someone you don't like did better than everyone else.

I’m not a conspiracy theorist at all - I’d just like a sales report haha xx

The sales reports have now been posted on Music Week. Unfortunately I no longer have a subscription with them so can't read the full reports. Here's all I can access:

Charts analysis: Ed Sheeran & Elton John's Merry Christmas achieves third week at No.1

Christmas is over but the passion for Christmas songs is evidently not. Despite the fact that only the first day of the chart week was pre-Christmas, the second day was Christmas itself, and the last five days were post-Christmas, seasonal songs make their biggest impression ever on the chart.

We are in unchartered territory as the top 13 songs in the chart are Christmas-related, with Ed Sheeran & Elton John’s Merry Christmas resuming at the summit on consumption of 82,780 ...

Charts analysis: Ed Sheeran secures charts double victory for 11th time in his career

Eight weeks after debuting at No.1, Ed Sheeran’s = (Equals) returns to the summit, ending the five week reign of Adele’s 30.

With his Elton John duet Merry Christmas returning to the top of the singles chart, Sheeran performs the double for the 11th time in his career, and the first time since 2019 when No.6 Collaborations Project topped the album chart and Khalid pairing Beautiful People was No.1 single. Sheeran is the third act to do the double ...

which admiitedly isn't much...

So Last Christmas now has 9 weeks at #2, I make that tied with AIWCY, with Terry’s Theme from Limelight on 8 weeks. Any record spent more weeks at #2?

Nobody is saying it's a conspiracy theory

it's just a very desperate way to grab the #1 album from Adele, who would never lower herself to such desperate levels as to add an idiotic xmas song as track #1 to her album in order to get 3K extra fake sales. personally it's the lowest one can go, something only acts like Jax Jones or Mabel would do. A proper singer/songwriter who sees his/her album as a piece of work would not ruin it by adding an idiotic xmas song as track #1.

but of course Equals is already the worst album of 2021 so cannot be much worst, Pitchork nailed it on their review...

I’m sure his record label know that it’s a good thing to keep their artist album higher in the chart the better so more people hear it. Pretty smart if that’s the case. Why do you follow the charts so much if you get so annoyed when an artist you don’t like gets to number one!

Jo Stafford - You Belong To Me also had 9 weeks at #2.

It’s not as if Adele is going to struggle to put food on the table by virtue of having the #2 album this week
it's no hyperbole one of the ultimate pop classics of its time!

wouldn't surprise me if some generic dance DJ or rapper gets their hands on it in 2022.

It already happened in 2021

but I like this version
