With 'Peru' challenging for #1 this week, that got me thinking about what other songs have charted whose title consists solely of a country.

Which are your faves?

(Let me know if anyone can think of any that I've missed - there's bound to be some obscure #73 smash called Mongolia or something lol).

Art of Trance - Madagascar

Sash! Feat. Rodriguez - Ecuador

Future Sound of London - Papua New Guinea

The Gibson Brothers - Cuba

Kim Wilde - Cambodia

How strange, I was checking for exactly the same thing! Got as far as D, the others I've found which made the Top 40 are:

Levellers - Belaruse [OK, it has an extra 'e']

Crispy and Company - Brazil

plus a few which charted lower such as Tori Amos - China

They’re all exceptionally dreadful apart from Ecuador

'Peru' sharing its name with a country is actually just coincidental I think (it's a little difficult to find much context on what the lyrics mean but it's apparently referencing another song by an artist named Peruzzi, in case anyone was wondering why a Nigerian artist was singing about Peru of all places )

I haven't heard most of the songs on this list but 'America', 'Ecuador' and 'Papua New Guinea' stand out as faves so voted for those! (And for 'Peru' as well although with the caveat that I have to keep repeating that I prefer the version without Ed x)

Love Simon & Garfunkel - America too - voted for The Lebanon x

I've just discovered that actually six different songs called 'America' have charted :o

Cheers, I'm sure there are more that I've missed (not that my list was meant to be exhaustive) - I won't bother adding any more to the poll unless there is something really obvious that I haven't included.

And I've just thought of 'Brazil' by Declan McKenna - it didn't chart ofc but what a bop.

voted The Human League from the poll

other favourites-

Declan McKenna - Brazil

The Shins - Australia

Trying to think of other songs named after a country - can we count 'I Ran' by A Flock Of Seagulls? (sadly not a UK top 40 hit anyway though so that spoils my already tenuous joke x)

'Japan' by Famous Dex is the first serious one that comes to mind, although again was only a hit in the US.

That "Peru" is pretty good. I also like Tungevaag's one, although it's uncharted.

A hardstyle song called "Brazil":

I love that song! It was one of my favourite songs of whatever year it came out in. I'm glad someone else here knows it.

from that ist the best by miles is the Manics-Australia

with a bit of cheating there's T'pau-China in your Hand, although it's china as porcelain not as the country :)

really hate it when people use America to refer to the US, sorry Razorlight but America is the continent :D

A lot of south and central Americans would agree with you.
