Posted March 16, 20223 yr It’s been done many times over, but are we due to see a mass of artists collaborate together on a classic piece of music to raise funds for victims of war crimes and to assist refugees? I can see it being a real possibility in the coming weeks if someone like Simon Cowell leads the charge. Any thoughts? The last release for a major cause of note (I believe) was this one from 2017; 8O1CcwYf79I
March 16, 20223 yr ITV announced a Concert for Ukraine earlier today, it wouldn’t surprise me if there was something related to that. (I don’t believe Simon Cowell has anything to do with the music industry now, so I doubt he’ll be part of it)
March 16, 20223 yr I f***ing hope not. Charity singles are disgusting and need to be binned. :frankie: How are they disgusting when it raises hundred of thousands for charity?
March 16, 20223 yr News reports over the last few hours are saying a ceasefire agreement is almost done, so hopefully there will be no need
March 16, 20223 yr News reports over the last few hours are saying a ceasefire agreement is almost done, so hopefully there will be no need A single wouldn’t be to help stop the war though, it’ll be to help those who have already been harmed by it. Whom will probably need a lot of help for years to come.
March 16, 20223 yr Let's hope it's at least something a bit more inspired than Bridge Over Troubled Water for the billionth time.
March 16, 20223 yr Nothing to do with charity, but Sting's 'Russians' had a surge in popularity over the last few days on iTunes Germany... He also gave a new performance of it.
March 16, 20223 yr :frankie: How are they disgusting when it raises hundred of thousands for charity? A bunch of C-list artists fighting amongst themselves to get the most lines on a cover of some song from the 80's, record labels rubbing their hands at the exposure their artists get from the PR and not a genuine emotion from anyone involved. All money and business. Most 'profits' from these charity singles have to cover the artists fees, recording the song, putting it on playlists and shooting the video too before it even goes to a charity. Throw in the fact that a bunch of rich celebrities are guilt tripping the GP to put their hands in their pockets to download a song when they would probably 10x that amount if they just donated directly themselves. We're in a cost of living crisis for f*** sake. People are going to be starving or freezing to death from April and yet we're going to have the likes of Ed Sheeran probably telling us to help out and support the song while putting on his 'sad face' in the video before collecting his pay cheque. f*** off. If you care about Ukraine then volunteer or donate directly and stop supporting these narcissist charity songs. Edited March 16, 20223 yr by shadow2009
March 16, 20223 yr ^ yeah, have to say I agree. I’m sure there are certain people involved that genuinely want to do the right thing and have the best intentions, but it’s hard not to be cynical about these sort of things.

We'll see if any of the artists involved actually volunteer or make donations of their own to the cause or if they'll do nothing but Tweet the download link to the song.
March 16, 20223 yr News reports over the last few hours are saying a ceasefire agreement is almost done, so hopefully there will be no need Even if a ceasefire is agreed, war has an aftermath and millions of pounds, if not billions will be need to rebuild the country to be habitable for many of the refugees. The idea that any need for charitable actions end when the war ends is nonsense.

March 16, 20223 yr I think there is some good in charity singles. I would suggest that people who buy them fall into one of these two categories: a) People who wouldn't have donated if there wasn't a charity single b) People who have already donated and are now also buying the single And so, regardless of the intentions of the artists/producers involved, more money hass been raised for the cause than would have been had the single not been released. I think that is enough to qualify them as having good in them.

I think that is enough to qualify them as having good in them. I do agree for the most part on this. Charity singles have not been big sellers in the last few years since streaming has taken over. Looking at the last two ‘big’ charity singles (captain Tom and the radio 1 foo fighters cover), neither have done more than 150k sales (correct me if wrong) and realistically we are looking at 50% of those sales going to charity. A benefit concert however inspires more people to donate so prefer that than some flash in the pan cover. Echo the sentiments above still about the intentions of some of the participants to these records and how much they are doing to support the actual cause. Hard not to be a bit cynical in this day and age.
March 17, 20223 yr an inspiration to donate does work in drumming up donations but presented as 'artists for ukraine' or 'celebrities for ukraine' is ghoulish, largely because there would be very little attempt to create a worthwhile product out of it. However, would this even be necessary? Artists For Grenfell raised, what? £1m, at best?. Meanwhile the DEC Ukraine appeal topped £100m days ago. People are donating without a charity single. I can't imagine it making any significant impact if one does appear.
