It looks like Rishi Sunak will end up being the next PM. It's very similar to Theresa May & Boris Johnson winning every round of their leadership contests before they officially became PM.

Liz Truss has said that she became a Tory because of her dissatisfaction with the education system when she was at school. Every single day of her school life was under a Tory government.

If only she'd joined the Libdems in response to the governing politics of the her day in regard to schools and stuck with that moral highground....

She's not popular, so it will be good if she wins. Doubt she will make the ssme mkstake Mad May did and call an election, and yet... I wonder if we will ever have a female left wing pm :( Maybe onxe we get PR ... if ever.
Unfortunately I'm increasingly thinking it looks like they realised Penny is too sane (relatively) and we're going to end up with Sunak vs. Truss instead.

Truss is more popular with the member base I think. I think Rishi as leader stands a better chance in a general election. Truss, as someone has already pointed out, is a female version of Boris. It would not be a fun 2 years but think Labour and Lib Dems would do well against Truss.

Rishi Sunak - 118 (up 3)

Penny Mordaunt - 92 (up 10)

Liz Truss - 86 (up 15)

Kemi Badenoch - 59 (up 1)

So Britain's First candidate is knocked out (which does bring inital relief) but hoped the Tugendhat distribution would have gone more to Mordaunt and less to Truss.

It's going to be bloody Liz Truss as PM isn't it by no public demand whatsoever.

I think that is the nail in the coffin for Mordaunt, surprising that Truss gained more votes than her from the Tugendhat lot.
If Truss wins, that will mean a significant change in strategy for the Tories as well as Labour. With Truss as their leader, they will find it much harder to dismiss Starmer as boring.
No female candidate has ever outright lost a General Election so far - hope Truss is the first one and does it badly!

I think there is a large element of tactical voting going on right now, but does seem right now that Truss' name will be on the ticket, which as a few people have commented - is great for Labour.

You heard it here first last Thursday

"so Rish on maybe 120, Lame on 100 and Trusser on 140".

We can look forward to 2 years of Bozo-type headlines as we alienate every part of the world we havent already alienated and our economy plummets regardless of borrowing more money, stuffing the NHS, and delivering a tax cut that in no way compensates for massively high inflation. Starmer might be dull, but at least he doesnt come over as a villain from Thunderbirds, complete with randomly-waving puppet-arms.

Good prediction - I'd go for Sunak 140, Truss 120 and Mordaunt 100 in the end and Truss to win leadership election with 55/45 split on a low turnout of Tory membership votes.

I'm hoping somehow they've conspired to knock Badenoch out of this round as part of a tactical ploy.

I think no-commital-to-net-zero Badenoch may have done better if it wasn't for the timing of the heatwave.

Well Badenoch was worryingly (although not exactly surprisingly considering how far right the party is) winning polls of Tory members recently and could have been our Prime Minister if she had better momentum from the start and better connection with MPs. She could well be a future leader or indeed set a template on how Tories should be, extremely socially conservative and anti minorities almost akin to the Republicans. So although we've temporarily dodged a bullet (and I know we're more than likely to end up with Truss so it'll be bloody awful) who knows what will happen in the future?

I doubt her anti green credentials have cost her one bit with the target audience.

I just can't see us going down the route of someone like Badenoch in a General Election if she was leader. I remember Leadsome was all the range in 2016/2017 and she fell off a cliff. I appreciate that climate change is going to be the 'topic' of conversation even more so than it already is now. But it is going to be very hard to tell people to change their diets, reduce their carbon footprints etc. unless politicians lead by example.
